Jiang Wanwan was speechless.
Is it a family tradition in Zhang Cuihua's family to throw tantrums and roll on the ground at the slightest disagreement?
No wonder the dog was rolling around on the ground earlier; it turns out it learned from its grandma.
Seeing more and more villagers gathering to watch, Zhang Cuihua became even more smug. She rolled on the ground a few times, kicked her legs, and continued to wail, "Waaah, everyone come and judge! The whole Jiang family is bullying this old woman! Waaah, they even want to steal these worthless mushrooms and wild vegetables! They're so heartless! No wonder your Jiang family has always had so much bad luck!"
It's human nature to love watching excitement and listening to gossip.
The same applies to the villagers of Dashui Village.
A busybody followed up on Zhang Cuihua's words and asked, "Aunt Cuihua, what happened? Tell us all about it, and we'll all be your judges."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Cuihua sprang to her feet. She slapped her thighs and wailed, "Waaah! The dog smelled the aroma of meat and followed it to Old Jiang's house. Wan Yatou told the dog that if he wanted chicken soup, he should trade some mushrooms and wild vegetables with her."
The little dog, being small and naive, believed it and immediately went back to my house and brought back a big bowl of mushrooms and wild vegetables. But who knew, Wan Yatou was cunning; she took our mushrooms and vegetables but wouldn't give the dog any chicken soup. Everyone, please be the judge: if we can't have chicken soup, shouldn't we get our mushrooms and wild vegetables back?
But my fifth brother's wife wouldn't give it to me, and she even brought her daughter-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter to scold this old woman, waah~~"
As she spoke, Zhang Cuihua burst into loud, sorrowful sobs, tinged with grief and indignation. Tears streamed down her face as she pounded her thighs repeatedly with her fists, crying, "Waaah, my life is so miserable!"
After watching Zhang Cuihua's series of performances, Jiang Wanwan began to look at her in a different light.
With just a few words, Zhang Cuihua completely absolved herself of any ulterior motives, while also ruining her reputation. She didn't mention at all that she'd tried to trick her into giving her family chicken soup.
Sure enough, some villagers in Dashui Village began to gossip about Jiang Wanwan's family regarding this matter.
"Fifth Aunt, that's really unfair of you. Your granddaughter promised Gou'er she'd trade mushrooms for chicken soup, and now that she's accepted mushrooms from Aunt Cuihua's family, you're not going to give her chicken soup? That won't do! You have to give her either chicken soup or mushrooms, right?"
"That's right. If you ask me, the reason why the Jiang family has been having so many bad lucks in recent years must be because they've been doing these unethical things behind the scenes."
“We’re all neighbors, if you won’t exchange the chicken soup, you should at least return the mushrooms from Aunt Cuihua’s house.”
"Look at that girl, Wan Yatou. She's fair-skinned and quite pretty, yet she's doing all this shady stuff. Sigh!"
Many villagers in Dashui Village had suffered at Zhang Cuihua's hands, and although many had reservations about some of her family's actions, the villagers were inherently kind and simple. In most cases, most villagers were able to discuss matters objectively and not let personal opinions cloud their judgment.
"Pah! Don't you know what kind of person Zhang Cuihua is?" someone shouted.
Everyone turned around at the sound and saw a woman standing at the gate of the courtyard opposite Jiang Wanwan's house. The woman had dark skin and her face was covered with wrinkles that showed she had been through many hardships, making her look somewhat old.
"Hey, Aunt Wang, what do you mean by that?"
"Pah! What do you mean? I just carried some firewood into the kitchen and found you all standing around Old Jiang's door accusing him. Haven't you all suffered at Zhang Cuihua's hands? What are you all doing with your brains, actually believing her nonsense!" Aunt Wang put her hands on her hips and scolded these blind and gullible villagers without any politeness.
"Aunt Wang, it seems you know what happened? Tell me quickly."
