Jiang Wanwan was searching the bed, looking through all the blankets several times, but she couldn't find anything.
With a "clang," the earring she was wearing came loose, fell to the ground, and rolled under the bed.
Jiang Wanwan squatted down, peered under the bed, and reached under the bed to pick up her earlobe.
Just then, her fingers touched a cold, metallic object.
Jiang Wanwan stretched out her fingers and reached hard, finally managing to grab the object in her hand.
She held the object up to her eyes and examined it closely. She saw that it was made of bronze, with the character "令" (command) engraved on the front and an intricate totem carved on the back.
Jiang Wanwan quickly called over Qi Zhao, who was engrossed in searching, "Qi Zhao, come and take a look at what this is. It looks like a token to me."
Upon hearing this, Qi Zhao immediately put down what he was holding, took three steps in two to walk up to Jiang Wanwan, took the thing from her hand and squinted to examine it.
“This is the Black Feather Token! It’s the token held by the Black Feather Army led by my uncle. It seems this is where Vice General Liu is staying.”
"Great! We've finally found him!" Jiang Wanwan's eyes lit up as she excitedly exclaimed.
It won't be long before Su Mu is sent to the guillotine.
Then, recalling the medicine in the yard, Jiang Wanwan realized that Vice General Liu hadn't returned to the yard for several days, and she felt a pang of disappointment.
"What should we do? It looks like Deputy General Liu hasn't returned for several days, and our leads have gone cold again. Could Su Mu's men have found Deputy General Liu before us and killed or captured him?" Jiang Wanwan couldn't help but speculate on the worst-case scenario.
"Don't rush, maybe Vice General Liu has gone out on business. Come on, I'll take you to an inn first, and then I'll come back to guard this courtyard and wait for him to appear."
"That's all we can do," Jiang Wanwan said.
So the two of them climbed over the wall again. This time, Qi Zhao no longer grabbed her by the back of her neck to pull her out, but instead dragged her out by the arm.
The two emerged from the narrow alley, leading the horse they had just hidden, and headed towards East Street.
Chengdong Street is a relatively bustling street in Anhuai County, and there are many guesthouses along it.
As the two walked down the street, they noticed that only a handful of shops were open, and there were very few people around. The people who were there seemed very wary, frequently peeking towards the city gate, and walking hurriedly. They would buy what they needed and immediately flee, as if a monster might leap out of the city gate at any moment and snatch them away.
Jiang Wanwan looked around, frowned, and whispered to Qi Zhao, "Qi Zhao, don't you think this place is strange?"
Qi Zhao nodded, "That is indeed strange. Let's hurry and find an inn, and we'll find out by asking the people there later."
The two quickened their pace, but all the inns in the city were closed, and no matter how much they knocked, no one answered.
Finally, Jiang Wanwan saw an inn that was about to close.
She rushed over, stopped the door from closing, and called out, "Innkeeper, we need to stay at the inn."
"Oh dear, madam, are you out of your mind? It's getting late, and you're still wandering the streets all by yourself. Come in quickly, come in quickly!" The waiter peeked towards the city gate, his movements and expression showing great anxiety.
