Just then, there was a knock on their door.
"Sir, quickly blow out the candle! The bandits are coming!" came the innkeeper's urgent voice from outside.
Jiang Wanwan reacted instinctively, puffed out her cheeks, and blew out the candle in one breath.
She groped her way to the door in the dark, and as soon as she opened it, she heard the waiter's anxious voice giving her instructions.
"Madam, whatever you see, you must not make a sound. You must not peek out, and you must not light the candles!"
Jiang Wanwan replied softly, "I understand, thank you, Brother Xiao Er."
After giving his instructions, the waiter left quietly.
Jiang Wanwan quietly closed the door and, using the bright moonlight, groped her way to the window.
The two opened the window a crack, stood behind it, and looked outside.
"Da da da~~"
A loud clatter of hooves came from the direction of the city gate, growing louder as it approached.
Before long, Jiang Wanwan saw a dozen bandits wielding large machetes riding on horseback through the streets, with another twenty or so bandits jogging after them.
The leader of the bandits was a burly man with a full beard. His left eye was covered by a black eye patch, and a scar ran from his forehead to his left cheek on the right side of his face, making him look extremely fierce.
"Brothers, rob these shops that don't have yellow flags!" The one-eyed leader brandished his broadsword, gesturing towards the shops in front of him, and said with a sinister grin.
"Yes, Boss!"
At a command, the bandits, their faces flushed, excitedly began to smash open the shops that did not display yellow flags.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The quiet street was suddenly filled with the sound of doors being slammed.
After the bandits broke down the shop doors, they brazenly took the sacks and filled them with the contents. If there were people inside the shops, the bandits dragged them out onto the empty streets like dead pigs.
"Ahhh! Spare me, spare me! Boss, please spare me!" A woman begged for mercy after being dragged into the street.
"Hahaha, this young lady is truly beautiful." The one-eyed man leered at the woman, his laughter rampant. He nimbly dismounted from his horse and began to grope the woman, subjecting her to the utmost humiliation.
"Boss, please spare my wife! Waaah~~ Please give me a few more days, I will definitely put the yellow flag back on, please spare her!" The shopkeeper was kicked to the ground by the bandits, and he struggled to get up, trying to protect his wife behind him.
"Hehehe, Lao Liu, I've already given you a chance, but you didn't seize it. Since you can't even continue the family line, you probably can't afford to support your own wife, so I'll just help you support her for now."
"Guards, bring this beauty back to my stronghold to be my twenty-third concubine."
"Yes, Chief." The bandits responded in unison.
"Bang bang bang!"
Manager Liu kowtowed violently, weeping and begging for mercy, "Please, Master, spare my wife!"
"Your wife? Are you blind? This is the chief's twenty-third concubine!" A bandit stepped forward and slapped Manager Liu several times across the face.
"Aww~" Manager Liu was so badly beaten that he saw stars and almost fainted.
"Hey, Gou Dan, that's enough. We still need to keep him to expand our village."
Immediately afterwards, the bandits dragged out several more people from the shops they had broken into.
