Chapter 52 Shopkeeper, I'm Here to Pawn Something

The pawnshop owner saw that Su Wanwan was dressed shabbily, but he didn't look down on her.

Su Wanwan gave a wry smile. "Shopkeeper, I'm here to pawn something."

As she spoke, she took out a jade hairpin from her sleeve.

This jade hairpin was taken from the original owner's black box; it was one of the cheaper pieces of jewelry she brought with her this time.

Before she knew whether the pawnshop owner would offer a fair price, she decided to use the hairpin to test the waters.

Su Wanwan's yellowed fingers gripped the jade hairpin tightly as she looked at the pawnshop owner with a bitter expression. "Shopkeeper, I'm desperate, so I'm pawning my few pieces of jewelry. Please give me a fair price."

"Of course. Madam, please let this old man take a look at the hairpin first."

"Okay." With that, Su Wanwan reluctantly placed the jade hairpin on the counter.

The pawnshop owner took the hairpin in his hand and examined it closely in the light.

"Madam, this hairpin is in excellent condition. Its texture is warm to the touch, and its fine, unique grain makes it a fine hairpin. It's worth ten taels of silver if you pawn it, and twelve taels if you don't. Would you prefer to pawn it or not?"

Su Wanwan was fairly satisfied after hearing this.

The price offered by the pawnshop owner was reasonable.

“I’ll take it all.” Su Wanwan said without hesitation.

"Shopkeeper, I have some jewelry to pawn."

As she spoke, Su Wanwan pulled out all the jewelry she was wearing, leaving the pawnshop owner dumbfounded.

"Madam, what are you doing...?" The pawnshop manager stared in shock at Su Wanwan's series of bizarre actions.

A bad thought suddenly popped into his mind: Could this young lady be a thief?

Su Wanwan immediately saw what the shopkeeper was thinking. She raised her sleeve to wipe away imaginary tears from the corners of her eyes, and said with a bitter expression, "Shopkeeper, you don't know this, but I was once a young lady from a wealthy family who never had to worry about food or drink. That year, I met my husband by chance, and in a moment of irrationality, I was tricked by him into giving me some money and eloping with him."

I thought I had found a good man, but I never imagined he was just a heartless scoundrel. He squandered all the money I brought from home and was still having affairs. Now, because I have no money to give him, he's even hitting me! Waaaaah~~

As she spoke, Su Wanwan revealed a dark bruise on her wrist. "I can't go on like this anymore. I'm thinking of pawning all this jewelry, finding a place where no one knows me, giving birth to my child, and raising him/her well. Waaah~~~"

The pawnshop owner sighed, "So that's how it is. Madam, don't worry, I'll calculate for you how much silver these pieces of jewelry are worth. Are they all pawned on a fixed-price basis?"

"Yes, all of them are sold off." Su Wanwan wiped her eyes and said.

"Okay."

After saying that, the pawnshop manager began to examine each item one by one.

Su Wanwan wasn't worried that the pawnshop owner would find the General Weiwu's Mansion's mark on these pieces of jewelry. She had already considered this issue and specifically chose those pieces that were both valuable and did not bear the Mansion's mark.

"Madam, this Phoenix Sunrise Gold Hairpin costs 150 taels."

"Teardrop-shaped red jadeite earrings, weighing 8 taels."

"A gold hairpin with intricate patterns and kingfisher feathers, worth 80 taels."

......

While announcing the prices, the pawnshop manager quickly calculated the value on his abacus. After announcing the total value of all the jewelry, he also announced the total amount: "Madam, all these pieces of jewelry are worth a total of five hundred and eighty taels of silver."
