On her way home, Jiang Wanwan gleaned some understanding of Grandma Zhang from snippets of conversation between Madam Hu and Madam Lu.
He is greedy for small gains, sharp-tongued, and loves to spread rumors.
Jiang Wanwan secretly remembered this and decided to stay away from this person in the future.
Soon, the group returned to the front gate of the Jiang family's residence.
Jiang He pushed open the door and had just stepped inside when Old Lady Jiang, who was sitting under the big pomelo tree, asked loudly, "Did you find any mushrooms or wild vegetables on the mountain today?"
Before anyone could answer, she sighed again, "Oh, what hope do I still have? Our family has been so unlucky these past few years. Other families can find lots of wild vegetables and mushrooms when they go up the mountain, but we're the only ones who, if we're lucky, can pick a few mushrooms, but if we're unlucky, we can't pick a single one."
Even the wild vegetables seemed to have grown legs and run away on their own. Sigh!
The Lu family members exchanged glances, their eyes full of smiles. Madam Hu tapped the courtyard gate with her chin, "Dahe, go and close the gate quickly."
"Alright!" Jiang Jiang immediately understood his mother's intention and quickly closed the door tightly.
"Mother, look what this is!" Madam Hu grinned, holding two dead chickens in her hands.
Grandma Jiang reluctantly looked up and said, "What are you looking at? Did you catch a pheasant or something...?"
The words stopped abruptly. Old Mrs. Jiang's eyes widened as she stared blankly at the pheasant her eldest daughter-in-law was holding. Her hand trembled as she pointed in Hu's direction, her mouth moving slightly, "Ah! Chicken, chicken!"
Her voice was cracking, sounding like a pig being slaughtered.
"Shh! Mother, keep your voice down! Keep your voice down! Don't let anyone hear!" Hu Shi, carrying the pheasant, jogged up to Old Lady Jiang.
Grandma Jiang quickly covered her mouth, her eyes wide open, and nodded vigorously, "Shh! Keep it down, keep it down!"
"Eldest daughter-in-law, what's going on with this pheasant?" Old Mrs. Jiang asked in a breathy voice, pointing at the pheasant.
"Mother, what's wrong?"
"Old woman, did you fall?"
"Grandma, Grandma, what's wrong?"
Before Mrs. Hu could answer, several voices rang out at the same time, followed by hurried footsteps from inside the house.
Jiang Wanwan looked around and saw that the people who came were her uncle, her father, and the four members of her second wife's family.
They were all startled by the pig-like screams that Old Lady Jiang had just made.
Grandma Jiang had her back to the group, and her figure conveniently blocked the chicken that Madam Hu was carrying, so none of the Jiang family members noticed the pheasant's presence.
"Mother, did you fall? Are you alright...? Ah!!" Uncle Jiang ran to Grandma Jiang's side, and when he saw the two chickens in Hu's hands, he froze on the spot.
"Oh no, oh no, Mother really did fall. Judging from my brother's appearance, it must be quite serious," Uncle Jiang said anxiously.
"mother!"
"Milk!"
"Old woman!"
The group jogged over.
"Old woman, you don't have... a chicken!" Old Jiang shouted until his voice was hoarse.
"chicken!!!"
"Two chickens!"
"Ah!!!" Zhu screamed.
Old Mrs. Jiang had never been so nimble. She lunged forward and tightly covered Zhu's mouth with both hands. She glared fiercely at Zhu, "Are you trying to die, yelling so loudly!"
With her mouth covered, Zhu couldn't make a sound and could only nod repeatedly. Only then did Old Lady Jiang release her hand from Zhu's mouth.
Old Man Jiang suppressed his excitement, "Quick, let's go inside and talk!"
