Chapter 11 The First Increase in Reputation

Jiang Ling led the village chief to the back mountain, where the mountain was almost entirely covered with small purple flowers, so many that even Jiang Ling was secretly surprised.

Jiang Ling walked to the nearest small purple flower and repeated her previous actions. In no time, she had uprooted several potatoes.

"Village chief, look, I told you I wasn't lying to you!" Jiang Ling said proudly, holding up the potato in her hand.

When the village chief saw the potatoes in Jiang Ling's hand, he looked surprised and trembled all over. Then his knees buckled and he knelt down on the ground with a "plop".

Jiang Ling was startled by the village chief's actions, and she quickly threw the potatoes she was holding onto the ground.

"I just found potatoes, right? The village chief doesn't need to give me such a big bow, does he?" Jiang Ling thought to herself as she quickly walked up to the village chief.

Just as I was about to help the village chief up and say some polite words, the village chief suddenly muttered to himself, "White... White-haired Goddess! The White-haired Goddess has appeared! Our village is saved!"

"What? The White-Haired Goddess? She's appeared? Oh, so that kneeling wasn't for me?" Hearing the village chief's mutterings, Jiang Ling's outstretched hand froze in mid-air, and even the corners of her mouth twitched into an awkward smile.

"Village... Village Chief, you should get up first, don't hurt yourself kneeling!" Although Jiang Ling was a little embarrassed, she still helped the village chief up. After all, more or less the villagers were willing to come to the mountains to pick wild vegetables. If she saw this scene, Jiang Ling probably wouldn't be able to explain it no matter how many mouths she had.

"I'm so sorry, Jiang. I doubted you just now!" The village chief tried to calm himself down and said to Jiang Ling in a still somewhat agitated tone.

After hearing the village chief's apology, Jiang Ling did not show any expression. She just glanced at the village chief and said meaningfully, "Village chief, I hope you will be more tolerant of my situation as an orphan and widow in the future."

In reality, Jiang Ling wasn't as selfless and great as the village chief thought. With potatoes all over the mountains, even if Jiang Ling and her family of four dug non-stop for twelve hours, they probably wouldn't be able to dig up many.

If too much of this stuff is kept at home, it will inevitably arouse suspicion. She is already conspicuous enough as a woman with three children during the famine years. If this ordinary potato causes unnecessary trouble, it would be a loss.

Moreover, ancient villages have always been bound together by clan blood ties and power.

Jiang Ling originally had little connection with Lu Family Village, and now that she's divorced that scumbag Lu Youren, she needs to establish a firm foothold in the village if she wants to live peacefully and stably there. The village chief is Jiang Ling's first step to securing her position; only by cultivating a good relationship with him will her future in Lu Family Village be easier.

After hearing Jiang Ling's words, the village chief paused for a moment, then nodded and said meaningfully, "Don't worry, Jiang. You've put aside past grievances and found food for the people of Lujia Village. This kindness is something our Lujia Village owes you. If anyone dares to bully you in Lujia Village in the future, I will definitely make them pay!"

"Grandpa...Grandpa..."

Just as Jiang Ling was about to say something, a childish voice came from behind her and the village chief. There, the village chief's eldest grandson, Lu Gousheng, was running breathlessly towards the village chief.

"Gousheng, why did you come here?" The village chief was clearly startled when he saw his grandson. He quickly wiped the sweat from Lu Gousheng's forehead and asked with concern.

"Grandma...Grandma was worried about you because you haven't gone home for so long..."

"This old woman, she worries all day long. Do you think I, a grown man, would get lost?" The village chief interrupted Lu Gousheng somewhat awkwardly.

"Gousheng, you're quick on your feet, go to the village entrance and ring the bell now. If anyone asks, just say I have something urgent to announce!" The village chief patted Lu Gousheng on the head and said.

Lu Gousheng obediently nodded and disappeared in a flash from Jiang Ling and the village chief's sight.

Jiang Ling and the village chief also emerged from the mountains one after the other.

The entrance to Lujia Village was already crowded with people, and some impatient women had already asked Lu Gousheng, "Goushengzi, the village chief only asked you to ring the bell? He didn't tell you what else to do?"

Lu Gousheng scratched his head somewhat awkwardly and said, "No...no, Grandpa just said there was something important to announce."

His words elicited various expressions from everyone present, and some even began to whisper among themselves.

The village chief stood on the periphery of the crowd and coughed loudly, finally drawing everyone's attention. Upon seeing that it was the village chief, the crowd immediately made way for him.

However, when everyone saw that Jiang Ling was following behind the village chief, the original silence immediately turned into whispers.

"Oh, who do I look like? It's you, the one who can't have a son!" A sarcastic voice came from the crowd.

After the voice appeared, everyone's eyes fell on Jiang Ling. Jiang Ling glanced at the voice and saw Lu Youren's smug face in front of her.

Lu Youren even deliberately touched Widow Wang's belly in front of Jiang Ling, seemingly as if to mock Jiang Ling for not being able to give birth to a son.

Widow Wang, standing to the side, proudly puffed out her round belly and looked at Jiang Ling defiantly.

Jiang Ling gave a cold laugh, glanced up at the village chief standing on the platform, and after giving Jiang Ling a look that said "Don't be impatient," the village chief coughed loudly and said to the crowd below, "Quiet! Quiet down!"

"I've called everyone here so urgently because I have some good news to announce: potatoes have been discovered in the mountains behind the village! These things look like horse bells, hence the name 'potato'!"
