Before long, the white-haired woman emerged from the cave again, this time carrying some white objects in her hands.
"Here, I hope you'll treat my son well for the sake of the money!"
Jiang Ling then realized that the white-haired woman's hand was holding silver, which Jiang Ling quickly counted and found to be about seven or eight taels.
Although Jiang Ling was surprised that the white-haired woman in front of her had so much money, she didn't ask. Instead, she put the silver back into the white-haired woman's arms and said, "I don't need this. How can a woman like you live without money? Don't worry, I will treat your son well!"
The white-haired woman shoved Jiang Ling again. Seeing Jiang Ling's resolute attitude, she could only sigh and hunch back into the cave.
That night felt exceptionally long to Jiang Ling, as a complex mix of excitement, doubt, and unease churned within her.
As dawn broke, Jiang Ling sat up in bed and carefully put on her shoes before getting out of bed.
I pushed open the door and walked towards the village chief's house.
The summer sun is scorching, and farmers generally don't work under the blazing sun anymore, so they've been getting up very early these days.
"Old man, when will this drought finally end!"
As soon as Jiang Ling reached the door of the village chief's house, she heard the village chief's wife complaining from inside.
"Village chief, are you home?" Jiang Ling gently knocked on the door and asked.
The footsteps grew clearer as they approached, and the door was opened from the inside, revealing the village chief's somewhat weathered face.
"Jiang, what brings you here so early?" The village chief frowned and subconsciously took a few steps back.
"Could...could we talk in private for a moment?" Jiang Ling glanced towards the village chief's house, where the village chief's wife was standing inside, looking in their direction.
"If you have something to say, just say it openly. Why do things that can't be brought to light?" The village chief seemed to hate sneaky behavior, frowning and scolding him coldly.
"This..." Jiang Ling was a little troubled. Although a water source had been found, the most important problem had not yet been solved. Moreover, her idea was only at the preliminary stage. If the experiment failed, she would probably be blamed by others.
"Village Chief, I promise I came to see you today because it's very important, but this matter can only be known between the two of us for now!" Jiang Ling thought for a long time before finally coming up with a somewhat lame reason.
The village chief gave Jiang Ling a strange look, and after confirming that Jiang Ling was not lying, he walked out of the door.
"Jiang, why are you looking for me?" Jiang Ling and the village chief had just arrived at an inconspicuous wasteland when the village chief asked impatiently.
"I...I said I found a water source!" Jiang Ling said softly.
"What?" The village chief's eyes widened upon hearing this, and after a moment of stunned silence, he suddenly let out a loud shout.
"Village chief... keep your voice down..." Jiang Ling reminded him.
The village chief quickly covered his mouth with his hand and asked in shock, "Jiang, you...you can't say things like that!"
“There really is a water source, but…”
"Hey! But what is it? Tell me quickly!" The village chief was really anxious. He stared at Jiang Ling, stretched his neck, and urged her to finish her sentence.
"However, the water source is blocked by a huge rock..."
"Where is the water source? Jiang, hurry! Take me there!" The village chief urged before Jiang Ling could finish speaking.
"In the White-Haired Goddess Cave..."
"Nonsense! Who let you in! Do you know that angering the White-Haired Goddess will bring disaster upon the people of Lu Family Village!" The village chief's face turned pale and then red, and his emotions fluctuated between excitement and anger.
As Jiang Ling spoke, she kept glancing at the village chief, afraid that the nearly fifty-year-old man in front of her might faint from the shock.
"The White-Haired Goddess appeared to me in a dream last night, saying that the punishment for our Lu Family Village has ended. She took pity on us because we had no evil in our hearts and pointed out a water source to save us from our dire straits!"
After saying this, Jiang Ling was truly impressed with her own ability to make up lies; it was obvious that she was just spouting nonsense with her eyes wide open.
Upon hearing this, the village chief's expression changed even faster than turning the pages of a book. His voice trembled slightly, filled with awe, as he asked, "Jiang... Jiang Shi, did the White-Haired Lady say anything else?"
Jiang Ling pretended to think for a moment, then rolled her eyes and said, "She didn't tell me anything else. The White-Haired Goddess only told me the location of the water source. Let's go take a look!"
Jiang Ling was worried that saying too much would give her away, so after she finished speaking, she quickly walked towards the mountains, with the village chief following closely behind her.
"Ah...this...how come there's a little boy here?" Just as Jiang Ling expected, when they arrived at the White-Haired Goddess Cave, the little boy was already sitting at the entrance of the cave.
When the little boy saw Jiang Ling and the village chief appear, he stood up and said in a childish voice, "I am a celestial attendant under the White-Haired Goddess, waiting here for the destined one."
"What... there is... a destined person?" The village chief looked at Jiang Ling with a shocked and frightened expression.
Although Jiang Ling didn't know how the white-haired woman and the little boy had discussed it, judging from the little boy's red eyes and serious expression, he guessed that they had put in a lot of effort last night.
Jiang Ling quickly pulled the village chief to kneel before the little boy, revealing a fearful expression, and said, "The White-Haired Goddess guided me last night, saying that she has achieved perfect merit and has specially left a water source for our Lu Family Village. Please, fairy boy, lead the way!"
"Get up, I'll take you inside!" The little boy turned and entered the cave.
Jiang Ling helped the village chief up and followed closely behind.
"My God, there really is water here!!" The village chief burst into tears when he saw the sparse stream of water deep in the cave.
