At Jiang Ling's house, it was as lively as a tea party, with many villagers from Lujia Village bringing gifts of varying sizes to express their gratitude to Jiang Ling.
At first, Jiang Ling wanted to refuse, but as more and more people appeared, she gave up the idea, accepted everyone's gifts, thanked them, and invited them to stay at her home to drink tea, eat melon seeds, and chat.
This harmonious atmosphere was shattered by villagers who nearly ran out of breath.
"Yaojie's mother! Yaojie's mother, something terrible has happened! Quick! Open the door!"
The rapid knocking on the door displeased Jiang Ling, as she believed it signified a death.
"Yaojie, go open the door and see what's going on!" Jiang Ling shouted at Jiang Yaojie and Shen Congxin, who were sitting outside.
"Mother...no...something terrible has happened! Something's happened to Widow Wang's family!" Jiang Yaojie had only been gone for a minute when he returned, his face deathly pale as he looked at Jiang Ling.
"What?" Those around gasped in shock upon hearing this.
"Oh dear, what's going on?"
"Widow Wang? What could possibly happen to that shameless slut?"
"Yaojie's mother, why don't you go and take a look!"
Upon hearing Jiang Yaojie's words, the crowd erupted in excitement, discussing the matter animatedly.
Jiang Ling put down her teacup and melon seeds, glanced at the villagers who were running out of breath, and frowned as she asked, "What happened?"
"Yaojie's mother, you'd better go and see! Even the village chief can't stop her! That widow Wang is going to kill Lu Youren!"
The villager's words once again made everyone gasp. After a few seconds of silence, they suddenly screamed and frantically squeezed out of Jiang Ling's house, running wildly towards Lu Youren's house.
Jiang Ling followed closely behind, and together with a large group of people, they arrived at the gate of Lu Youren's house.
Before she even stepped inside, Jiang Ling heard Widow Wang's frantic shouts and screams. Her voice had long lost its humanity, sounding like that of a wild beast, sending chills down one's spine.
The women who had been watching the spectacle all stopped in their tracks, looking at each other, but none of them dared to take another step forward.
Jiang Ling glanced at the crowd and went inside.
Inside the house, Widow Wang was still holding a kitchen knife, cursing incessantly in her hoarse voice.
Jiang Ling walked over to the village chief and asked, "What happened? Everything was fine just now. How did it turn into such a big mess?"
Upon seeing Jiang Ling, the village chief grasped at her like a lifeline and quickly recounted the horrifying events that had just transpired.
It turned out that early in the morning, Widow Wang wanted to go to Jiang Ling's place to ask for some fertilizer, but she was worried that the child would cry and make Jiang Ling unhappy, so she thought of leaving the child at home and asking Lu Youren to take care of him for a while.
Widow Wang felt that no matter how harsh Lu Youren treated her on a daily basis, at least the child was Lu Youren's offspring, and moreover, it was a boy, so Lu Youren would be a little more careful.
Unfortunately, Widow Wang overestimated Lu Youren. That selfish and self-serving fellow would never care about a baby who was less than a year old.
Lu Youren was already furious when he couldn't find Widow Wang early in the morning, and the crying baby only added fuel to the fire.
In a fit of anger, Lu Youren shoved a blanket over the child, and the poor child's cries grew fainter and fainter.
When Widow Wang finally returned, she felt dizzy upon seeing the blankets on the bed. She mustered her courage and lifted the blankets, only to be struck dumb. The child's body was completely cold, and the bluish-purple skin constantly assaulted Widow Wang's eyes.
At this moment, Widow Wang almost collapsed. She rushed towards Lu Youren like a madwoman, frantically questioning him about the child.
There wasn't a trace of sadness on Lu Youren's face. He said perfunctorily, "I didn't want it to be like this either, but he's just too noisy. If it doesn't work out, we can just have another one. This one might just die young!"
Every word of these words was like a dagger, tearing at Widow Wang to pieces.
Widow Wang screamed in agony, losing all reason, and grabbed a kitchen knife from the table, wildly hacking at Lu Youren.
As the saying goes, the stubborn are afraid of the ruthless, and the ruthless are afraid of the reckless. Lu Youren, who is usually a scoundrel, was also afraid when he saw the crazed Widow Wang.
As for Old Lady Lu, she could only watch helplessly as all this unfolded before her eyes, with no way to stop it.
The village chief glanced helplessly at Jiang Ling and whispered, "What should we do?"
"What else can we do but report it to the authorities! Lu Youren deserves to die, and Widow Wang is no better! The most pitiful ones are the children!" Jiang Ling said coldly, looking at everything in front of her.
Looking at Jiang Ling's unchanging face, the village chief shook his head helplessly. He knew that if Lu Youren were a decent person, or if Widow Wang were even slightly more law-abiding, this whole mess wouldn't have happened.
Human strength is finite. After a long standoff in her own yard, Widow Wang and Lu Youren, in their anxiety and anger, finally collapsed to the ground with their eyes rolled back.
Seeing the unconscious Widow Wang lying on the ground, Lu Youren patted his chest and gasped for breath. The village chief was worried that Widow Wang would go crazy if she woke up, so he had his men carefully tie up Widow Wang's hands and feet.
Lu Youren, due to his physical limitations and injuries, decided to give up.
Jiang Ling, the village chief, the child who died young, Lu Youren, and Widow Wang sat in Jiang Ling's carriage, and Jiang Yaojie whipped the horse and drove towards the county government office.
Pingxi County Government Office.
As Magistrate Duan was figuring out how to promote chemical fertilizers, Zhao Liu walked in with a grave expression and whispered something in his ear.
Upon hearing this, Magistrate Duan flew into a rage. He slammed his fist on the table. "What? Liu Zi, are you telling the truth?"
“It’s absolutely true, the Jiang family is already in the imperial court!” Zhao Liu said.
