Chapter 8 What's wrong with eating some meat?

"Yaojie, take this bowl of meatballs to Uncle Village Chief and tell him to thank him for lending you the tools for chopping firewood!" Jiang Ling specially ladled a bowl of steamed meatballs and placed it in front of Jiang Yaojie.

Jiang Yaojie nodded, picked up the meatballs and walked towards the door. Whether it was because Zhao Erleng's wife was peeking too intently through the crack in the door, or because Jiang Yaojie was walking in a hurry, he almost bumped into Zhao Erleng's wife as soon as he pushed the door open.

"Ouch! Why are you so clumsy? Don't you know you almost bumped into me?" Zhao Erleng's wife said preemptively, not wanting anyone to discover that she was peeking through the door crack.

"I...I'm sorry, Aunt Erleng!" Jiang Yaojie said in a low voice when he realized he had almost bumped into someone.

"Yaojie, what's that you're holding?" Erleng's wife moved closer to Jiang Yaojie and sniffed the contents of his bowl.

"This is……"

"Yaojie, send the things over first, I'll handle things here!" Jiang Ling slowly walked out of the old house and said to Jiang Yaojie.

Upon hearing Jiang Ling's voice, Jiang Yaojie nodded quickly and continued walking towards the village chief's house.

Jiang Ling leaned against the door and looked at Zhao Erleng's wife in front of her, saying, "Erleng's wife, what's going on?"

"Ah! I...I...I..." Zhao Erleng's wife stood there stammering for a long time without saying anything.

Jiang Ling walked over with a smile, grabbed Zhao Erleng's wife's wrist and said, "Erleng's wife, come in and sit down. I just made some meatballs. I'll have Suihe serve you some so you can take them back for Dabao!"

“What? Meatballs? Jiang, you…you really with Lu Youren…” Zhao Erleng’s wife didn’t say the last three words, she just mouthed them.

Jiang Ling nodded generously, then continued to say to Zhao Erleng's wife, "Erleng's wife, Lu Youren and I have indeed divorced. Look, Widow Wang is about to give birth."

“Since Lu Youren and Widow Wang are in love, why should I hold on to him? Although Lu Youren doesn’t want these three children, Suihe and Wenxi came from my womb after all. As for Yaojie, although he wasn’t born to me, he’s been by my side all these years. How can I be so heartless as to abandon him?” Jiang Ling said, revealing a particularly sad expression.

Jiang Ling's words left Zhao Erleng's wife stunned and at a loss. Seeing this, Jiang Ling quickly wiped away her tears and forced a smile, saying to Zhao Erleng's wife, "Oh dear, sister-in-law, I was so busy complaining to you that I forgot to invite you in!"

Since Zhao Erleng's wife couldn't agree, Jiang Ling led the person into the house.

"Suihe, Wenxi, call for help!" Jiang Ling said to Jiang Suihe and Jiang Wenxi, who were already sitting at the dining table.

"Aunt Erleng..."

"Suihe, go get a bowl and serve some meatballs for your Aunt Erleng!" Jiang Ling said.

"Oh, Jiang, you're too kind. You're a woman raising three children all by yourself, it's already hard enough. I... how can I accept your things!" Zhao Erleng's wife hesitated for a long time before shaking her head and refusing the meatballs on the table.

Jiang Ling shoved the bowl into Zhao Erleng's wife's arms and said firmly, "Erleng's wife, aren't you just estranged from me? In the past, my three children were saved from starvation thanks to your occasional help!"

"With this drought, I know everyone is struggling. I pawned my two pieces of jewelry to barely make ends meet. My children are growing, so I gritted my teeth and bought a piece of meat!"

Jiang Ling said this to let everyone know through Zhao Erleng's wife that she and Lu Youren had nothing to do with each other anymore. She also wanted to put pressure on Lu Youren through Zhao Erleng's wife so that everyone in the village would know what kind of person he was.

In the original owner's memories, Zhao Erleng's wife was a kind-hearted person. Although she was a non-family member who had fled famine a few years ago, she had a very good reputation in the village, so what she said was more convincing.

Hearing Jiang Ling's words, Zhao Erleng's wife's eyes also reddened. She repeatedly comforted her, "Jiang Shi, please...please don't say that. What you said hurts me deeply. We've known each other for so many years, and this Zhao Di..."

At this point, Zhao Erleng's wife seemed to remember something. She looked at Jiang Ling with some curiosity and asked, "What did you call these two children just now?"

“Since I have nothing to do with Lu Youren anymore, I’ve changed the names of these three children. Names like Zhaodi and Niandi don’t sound very nice. One is called Suihe and the other Wenxi. Sister-in-law Erleng, do you think they’re not bad?” Jiang Ling said.

"This..." Just as Zhao Erleng's wife was wondering how to answer, Jiang Yaojie pushed open the door and walked in.

"Oh dear, I won't disturb the four of you while you eat. I... I'll head back now. I'll wash this bowl and bring it back to you tonight!" Zhao Erleng's wife looked at Jiang Yaojie as if he were her lifeline.

She hurriedly left Jiang Ling's old house. Along the way, Zhao Erleng's wife had a strange feeling. She felt that this Jiang was different from the Jiang she knew before, but she couldn't quite put her finger on why.

Inside the old house, three children sat at the dining table, swallowing their saliva incessantly. Their bright eyes kept looking at the full bowl of rice and the plate overflowing with meatballs. They felt that this happiness had come too suddenly. Just a few days ago, they were starving, but today they were able to eat a whole bowl of brown rice and a large plate of meatballs.

Even the youngest, Jiang Wenxi, pinched her own cheek hard, worried that everything in front of her was just a dream.
