During the confinement period, Li Nanshan gave his wife a chicken every two days and a pig's trotter every three days as nourishment. Tao Xiaoxi couldn't eat so much, so Li Nanshan asked Beibei to eat together. He would buy up the leftovers from the mother and daughter, so that nothing would be wasted.
Tao Xiaoxi didn't gain much weight during her pregnancy, but she became visibly rounder during the confinement period. She tried to find ways to eat less and less.
Li Nanshan pried into her thoughts and criticized her with a sullen face, "I heard that if you don't take good care of yourself during the confinement period, you will suffer from lifelong illnesses. Be good and eat well."
Tao Xiaoxi pouted and said, "I'm almost eating like a pig."
Li Nanshan smiled and said, "Don't be afraid, I am your pigpen."
Tao Xiaoxi laughed so hard that it hurt the wound, and Li Nanshan didn't dare to speak nonsense anymore.
August and September were truly hot, and Tao Xiaoxi was even more afraid of the heat than before. She wished she could jump into the well to cool herself down. But Li Nanshan had heard from somewhere that women in confinement must wear long sleeves and long pants, and avoid the wind. This suffocated Tao Xiaoxi to death. While Li Nanshan was cooking, she pulled up her sleeves and trouser legs, opened the door, and didn't dare open the windows. After all, she knew that it was not advisable to be exposed to the wind during confinement.
But there was one thing she couldn't tolerate: Li Nanshan didn't allow her to wash her hair!
No matter how she explained, as a doctor or from a scientific point of view, this guy would not give in at all. He just said it couldn't be washed.
Tao Xiaoxi got mad, upset, acted like a spoiled child, and acted tough, but nothing worked. So she decided to join forces with Beibei.
After lunch that day, Beibei took the initiative to pull Li Nanshan to teach her how to write the questions for the first time in her life. Li Nanshan was flattered and quickly brought a small stool to sit next to Beibei and patiently tutored her.
Beibei said that she had finished writing in her notebook. Li Nanshan took a look and found that there were only a few pages left.
"Is there any more at home?" Li Nanshan asked.
"No more." Beibei shook her head. "Mom always bought them for me at the village supply and marketing cooperative."
"Then wait for me at home, I'll buy you a notebook." Li Nanshan didn't want Beibei to be disappointed in him, nor did he want her desire to study, which had just been ignited, to be extinguished by a notebook.
Li Nanshan told his wife through the window that he was going out and would be back soon.
"Okay, go ahead. Take your time and don't be in a hurry." Tao Xiaoxi said while restraining his excitement.
As soon as Li Nanshan pushed his bicycle out of the door, Tao Xiaoxi hurriedly called Beibei over, and started to get hot water and a basin. The mother and daughter were wetting their hair and pouring shampoo on it, but before they had time to wash, the courtyard door creaked and was pushed open from the outside.
Tao Xiaoxi was startled and looked up to see Li Nanshan standing at the door, looking at them in disbelief, with hurt evident in his eyes.
"I, I really can't stand it anymore." Tao Xiaoxi said aggrievedly.
Li Nanshan put his bicycle aside, walked forward to take Beibei's place, and began to wash his wife's hair with his own hands without saying a word.
"I'll wipe it dry right now. I won't wash it." Tao Xiaoxi admitted her mistake very well and was about to wipe it dry with a towel.
Li Nanshan didn't give it to her. He rubbed her hair silently and massaged her scalp. Then he rinsed her hair with lukewarm water and dried her hair with a towel. Still worried, he heated a towel on the wood stove to cover her hair. He used two or three towels in turn. Finally, the hair was completely dry and he felt relieved.
But he didn't say a word the whole time.
Tao Xiaoxi actually enjoyed it very much. After washing her hair, she felt like she was reborn, but she didn't dare to show it because someone was still angry.
"Why did you come back so soon? Did you buy Beibei's notebook?" Tao Xiaoxi asked again.
"Yeah." Li Nanshan only answered with one word.
Tao Xiaoxi was delighted. This was hope. "Then you go and help Beibei with her homework. I'm ready. Let me feed Manman."
Li Nanshan tied her hair into a ponytail, then brought Manman over and placed her in his arms. Watching his daughter happily sucking milk, he finally sighed helplessly and walked out. Before leaving, he didn't forget to tell her, "Call me when you're done."
"Oh, don't worry, I'm here." Tao Xiaoxi finally felt relieved.
Beibei didn't really want to study, but there was no way out now. Li Nanshan forced her to write ten more questions, which was not enough.
"Uncle Nanshan, why did you come back so soon?" Beibei asked for conversation.
"I didn't go to the supply and marketing cooperative." Li Nanshan said, without stopping the pen in his hand, and continued to make questions.
Beibei's heart sank when she saw it. "Where did this book come from?"
"I used it myself." Li Nanshan rode to the village entrance and suddenly remembered that he had brought the notebook back, so he turned back the same way. He had never imagined that the mother and daughter had planned such a conspiracy behind his back. He was furious, but there was nothing he could do. He just hoped that his wife would not suffer any sequelae, otherwise he would blame himself for the rest of his life.
Beibei also felt Li Nanshan's unhappiness, looked at him, and whispered, "I'm sorry, Uncle Nanshan."
Li Nanshan finally stopped writing and looked at her. "Then tell me what went wrong?"
"I shouldn't have lied to you," Beibei said, "but I really don't have my notebook anymore."
"Beibei," Li Nanshan put down his pen and patted Beibei's head. "We all want our mother to be happy, so I will try my best to satisfy her whatever she wants. But your mother is a little willful. I don't quite understand some of her ideas, so we have to control her and not let her do whatever she wants."
Unexpectedly, Li Nanshan's words were greatly recognized by Beibei. She nodded her head like a chicken pecking at rice, "That's right, my mother's hands are too big, she has to buy everything."
Li Nanshan smiled and scratched her nose. "We can't say that. Your mother is capable. She earns her own money and spends it herself. No one dares to say anything."
"When I grow up, I will earn my own money and spend it on my own." Beibei made a great wish.
"I think it's okay. Uncle Nanshan is waiting to see Beibei make a lot of money."
"Then can I not write this topic anymore?" Beibei took the opportunity to say.
Li Nanshan shook his head. "This is the price you pay for lying today. If you make a mistake, you must accept the punishment. So you must finish all these questions."
Beibei felt hopeless and would not help his mother deceive Uncle Nanshan if he had known earlier.
Tao Xiaoxi was feeding her baby peacefully when she suddenly let out a scream. Li Nanshan heard it and ran in, "What happened?"
"She bit me~~~" Tao Xiaoxi said with tears in her eyes.
Li Nanshan was amused and angry, but he still walked over and tapped his daughter's face with his finger, warning her, "Girl, don't bully your mother anymore."
The little girl Manman didn't care about all that. She sucked greedily with her lips, not caring whether her mother was in pain or not, and ignored her father's warnings.
