Chapter 1: Transmigrated into the Body of a Vicious Mother

"Woof, woof, woof."

Jiang Yu was awakened by the barking of dogs outside. She opened her eyes, sat up in bed, and found that everything around her had become extremely unfamiliar.

She rubbed her head and sorted out what had happened.

My best friend's husband cheated on me, so I took her to a hotel to catch him in the act. But the "other woman" discovered she'd been deceived by the scumbag and, in a fit of rage, stabbed me to death. After that, I was transported into a novel set in the 1980s.

The original protagonist of the novel was a military wife, extremely slovenly. Her long hair was so thick it was practically infested with lice, yet she never washed it. Married to the male protagonist for seven years, their meetings were always filled with arguments and swearing; she was practically a shrew. Because the male protagonist was a soldier and couldn't come home for a year or two at a time, she used the living expenses he sent her to support a gigolo.

That pretty boy was a sent-down youth who spent his days reciting sentimental poems, completely captivating the original owner of this body. Like the wealthy heiress, she would give him money when she was short of cash and meat when she was hungry; with just a word from the pretty boy, she would go through fire and water for him.

But recently the situation changed. Because the gigolo was demanding more and more money, she couldn't keep up and was dumped. The original owner went to find him, but after being humiliated, she threatened to go on a hunger strike and even pretended to be dead in bed. As a result, she actually died after stretching.

And she just happened to transmigrate here, neither alive nor dead.

Jiang Yu was speechless...

Using the original owner's memories, she groped her way to the table beside the bed and lit a candle. By the dim light, she looked around the room.

Just like in the novel, the family was destitute. In the small room, there was a table and a chair. The kang (a heated brick bed) was built by a bricklayer when they got married, and it was connected to the stove outside. As long as a fire was lit, it would be warm.

But the original owner was too lazy; she only wanted to stack several thick quilts on herself for warmth, so giving her the heated kang would be a waste.

The stench emanating from her almost made her vomit. Combined with her tangled hair, Jiang Yu really wished she could die again and go back in time.

She thought about it, but she was also afraid of the worst-case scenario. If she really died, it would be too late to regret it.

I reluctantly pinched my nose, boiled a pot of water, and took a serious bath, even using the original owner's unopened soap. It took me an hour to barely comb my hair, and the water was black afterward.

The fire in the stove was blazing, and it took her a while to warm up and feel comfortable all over. She found some of the original owner's relatively clean clothes, threw them on haphazardly, and planned to crawl into bed for a good night's sleep, as memories of the original owner flooded her mind.

Because it was winter, a thick layer of snow had fallen outside, and the north wind blowing in made Jiang Yu almost faint from the cold. She got up shivering and prepared to lock the windows.

Holding the candle, I walked to the window, then paused. The moonlight made the snow on the ground gleam. In the yard, two small, thin figures squatted beside the doghouse, each holding a small piece of cornbread and stuffing it into their mouths.

When the dog saw that its food had been taken away, it broke free from its leash and barked wildly.

Jiang Yu picked up her coat from the kang (a heated brick bed), put it on, rushed into the snow, and knocked the cornbread out of the child's hand without saying a word.

The two children looked at her in terror, their expressions not like those of someone looking at their own mother, but more like they had seen something horrifying.

When Jiang Yu was reading that novel, it was also described in the text that the original owner had two children, a six-year-old daughter named Shen Suisui and a four-year-old son named Shen Niannian.

The original owner frequently abused them, beating and scolding the two children whenever things didn't go their way, resulting in them having no intact skin on their bodies.

Not only that, but because the children were never fed enough, they suffered from chronic malnutrition and looked like two or three-year-old children. They were also made to sleep in a drafty cowshed in the dead of winter.

The two children grew up filled with resentment, studying diligently and achieving success. Naturally, they didn't let the original owner of this body go. The original owner's ending in the story is tragic; the children incited the village's feudal elders to drown her in a pig cage. Before this, she had no one to care for her because of a broken leg, and her body was crawling with maggots.

The thought of maggots wriggling all over her body sent shivers down Jiang Yu's spine. She vowed that as long as she didn't have to go back to her original form, she would do everything she could to change the outcome.

She reached out to touch the children, and the two kids took two steps back in fright.

"Mom, we were just too hungry. We didn't mean to steal Little Black's food."

Shen Sui Sui stood in front of her younger brother. She knew that the dog was a gift from that man to her mother, and that he usually cherished it dearly.

Jiang Yu closed her eyes, trying her best to hold back her tears. Inwardly, she cursed:

'That heartless bastard who owned the original owner didn't deserve to be a mother.'

She forced a smile, trying to appear more amiable.

"Why don't you go back inside with Mom?"

The original owner of this body had never given the two children a kind look, so Jiang Yu's smile put their minds at ease. Shen Suisui breathed a sigh of relief; her mother was in a good mood today, so she probably wouldn't get a beating.

Seeing that the children had lowered their guard, Jiang Yu reached out to pull them closer, but the two children were so frightened that they backed away. It was the first time she had seen such a sinister look in the eyes of a six-year-old girl, which startled her and made her take two steps back. It seemed that it would take a long time to mend her relationship with the children.

She reassured herself:

She's just a six-year-old child; she doesn't have the power to kill her now. Besides, the original owner abused the child for six years; it's not something she can change overnight. Maintaining vigilance is probably a good idea; at least she won't be kidnapped by human traffickers in the future.

Once inside, the two children seemed a little uneasy. The original owner only allowed them to stay in the house for two days when her husband came home; otherwise, she wouldn't even let them near the door.

Jiang Yu spent a considerable amount of time mentally preparing herself before having the two children undress and get into bed. She also took off Shen Niannian's worn-out coat and pulled the blanket over him.
