Chapter 27 Children Also Need to Be Cleared of Their Innocence

She listened quietly for a while, then, as if it were none of her business, picked up the bowls and chopsticks and cleaned them up. After the old woman finished her tirade, she banged on the door. The two children looked terrified, exchanged a glance, and timidly hid behind Jiang Yu. It was obvious that Shen Bo's grandmother had come to demand an explanation for her beloved grandson.

As the chatter at the door grew louder, Jiang Yu heard a discordant voice:

“What kind of thing is it for an adult to bully a seven or eight-year-old child in public? Besides, we all live in Shenjiazhuang. If we want to fight, we should go back to the village. If we make a scene like this, won’t the surrounding villages all think we’re fighting amongst ourselves? It’ll be so embarrassing if word gets out.”

The old lady was furious. It was clearly her own grandson who had been bullied, so how did the discussion turn into a matter of village honor and disgrace? She wasn't that righteous; she had come here to demand an explanation from Shen Ying's wife.

Seeing that Jiang Yu was reluctant to show herself, the old lady had a hunch. It seemed that, just as Zhang Xinhua had said, she was taking her husband's success in the army very seriously and didn't respect her at all.

To get Shen Ying's wife to admit her mistake, she even invited the village chief. Old lady Li Xiuying was a respected figure in the village, and many people gave her face.

Although everyone knew she didn't get along with her daughter-in-law Zhang Xinhua, she doted on her precious grandson Shen Bo. If it weren't for seeing Shen Bo crying so hard, she wouldn't have wanted to come to Shen Ying's house and give them the time of day.

Li Xiuying sat at the gate of Jiang Yu's house, sobbing and complaining, which put the village chief, Shen He'an, in a difficult position.

What gave him a major headache was dealing with women and children, especially since these women were incredibly restless. In the early years of his tenure, he was constantly dealing with the relationship between Zhang Xinhua and her daughter-in-law, Li Xiuying. The two would argue every three days, have a major fight every five, and even dream about trying to break them up.

After the family separated in recent years, they settled down. However, the arrival of educated youth sent to the countryside in the village, and the ambiguous relationship between Shen Ying's wife and Lu Yi, one of the educated youths, became the subject of much gossip. Despite this, they were relatively well-behaved and never caused trouble at the neighborhood committee. Even so, hearing about it from others made one feel ashamed for them.

Now things are really messed up; the two troublemakers from Shenjiazhuang are at war. This is going to be interesting. On the way here, Shen He'an kept thinking, "Can't the town hold an emergency meeting to rescue him?"

When they arrived at Shen Ying's house, a huge crowd had gathered there. Looking closer, it seemed that almost half the village had come.

Shen He'an instantly felt a lack of oxygen to his brain, a suffocating sensation. He steeled himself, pushed through the crowd, and squatted down beside Li Xiuying, patiently asking:

"Auntie, what's wrong? Let's go to the village committee to resolve this."

Upon hearing her nephew's voice, Li Xiuying's feigned crying intensified. She pulled a handkerchief from her pocket, wiped her eyes, and sobbed:

“Nephew, you must stand up for your aunt! This Shen Ying family member beat my grandson and daughter-in-law at the market, and my grandson was so scared that he didn’t even eat lunch.”

'Whoosh~'

Before Shen He'an could reply, the courtyard gate swung open, and Jiang Yu stood stiffly in front of it, her face full of disdain. So, they came to her doorstep to throw mud at her, and even tried to twist the truth? Then don't blame her for being impolite.

"Ma'am, you can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want. You're spreading rumors today that I hit your precious grandson, do you have any evidence?"

"you..."

Li Xiuying stood up, pointing at her innocent face, her anger flaring. They'd already hit her, and yet she had the audacity to accuse them of spreading rumors? Did they think they had no one to rely on?

“Yes, Aunt Li, even though you’re an old woman, you can’t just make things up. Without evidence, aren’t you wronging Shen Ying’s wife?”

There's never a shortage of 'judges' in the crowd. Following the lead of others, Li Xiuying, with a long face, told her family to call Shen Bo over.

While waiting, Jiang Yu didn't forget to feed Xiao Hei. This action completely enraged Li Xiuying, who pointed at Jiang Yu and started cursing:

“Shen Ying’s wife, you beat my grandson and you still have the leisure to feed the dogs here? Do you really think that just because you’ve climbed up to Shen Ying, you don’t even need to pretend anymore? Wait until the New Year, I’ll make sure he divorces you. You’re unchaste and have no respect for your elders. I don’t know how your family raised you.”

Perhaps feeling it was inappropriate for an elder to say such things, they eventually lowered their voices to almost the minimum.

Jiang Yu rolled her eyes at her and ignored her.

A moment later, Shen Bo was dragged over. Upon seeing Jiang Yu, he was so frightened that he backed away repeatedly, shouting:

"Don't come any closer, I won't yell at you anymore, just don't come any closer."

He was clearly terrified.

Seeing her grandson like this, Li Xiuying felt heartbroken and wiped away her tears. She held Chenbo in her arms and said in a sob:

“Village chief, did you see everything? If this woman didn’t do anything to Xiaobo, why would he be so scared? I’m not trying to extort anything from her, I just want justice for my grandson, it shouldn’t be difficult, right?”

Among the crowd, those close to Li Xiuying couldn't bear to watch any longer. Aunt Li was right; if she hadn't done anything, Shenbo wouldn't have been so terrified of people.

Listening to the chattering sounds, Jiang Yu squatted down and patiently asked:

"Shenbo, your teacher should have taught you that children who lie will be eaten by wolves. Tell everyone properly, did I hit you? And why did I scold you?"

Looking at Jiang Yu's face, Shen Bo hesitated and stepped back. Seeing this, Li Xiuying immediately stepped in front of her grandson.

"You woman, you're quite something. The facts are right in front of you, yet you still try to threaten him in front of everyone. Shen Family Village cannot keep you here."

After saying that, she looked at Shen He'an, waiting for him to draw a conclusion.

Jiang Yu patted the dust off her body, pulled Shen Niannian over, rolled up the cuffs of his trousers, revealing a large bruise.
