In the past, he wouldn't have dared to speak to Jiang Yu; that shrewish woman could have easily given him a thorough dressing-down without any regard for right or wrong. But things are different now; he has to prioritize the bigger picture.
"Um, is there something you need?"
Jiang Yu glanced at him, her face expressionless. Everyone knew that Cui Jin was Bai Na's uncle, so she wouldn't elaborate. Given his usual bias towards his niece, and the fact that they were on opposite sides today, she decided to say as little as possible, or better yet, keep quiet.
Seeing that the other person didn't want to talk to him, Cui Jin rubbed his hands together and said with difficulty:
"Comrade, we see each other all the time. What do you think about resolving this privately? There's a policy now, isn't there? These kinds of civil disputes don't need to bother the police. Just pay what needs to be paid, apologize what needs to be apologized. Making a big fuss about it isn't good, don't you think?"
Even if things escalate, he can use his connections to make it a minor issue. Besides, if things really come down to it, Jiang Meier and Lu Yi are also partly to blame. Isn't she the one who cares most about Lu Yi? Shouldn't she be even more anxious than him now?
Jiang Yu looked at his ingratiating manner and understood. He was trying to fool her by claiming he didn't know the law, and was indirectly pleading for his niece's life because of the fate of that despicable couple.
"You're right, but this matter requires the consent of the person involved, right? It's no use telling me."
She was unaware of Cui Jin's fear of Shen Ying's power and never even considered that possibility.
"Yes, yes, Comrade Jiang is right."
Cui Jin's palms were sweating profusely. Wasn't it said that Shen Ying's wife was illiterate? How come she knows so much about this and even knows the person in question? Could it be that she has been secretly studying at home?
"Which one of you is Comrade Jiang Yu? Please come with me."
A young policeman called her name and walked towards the interrogation room next door. Jiang Yu got up looking confused, and seeing that Cui Jin hadn't been called, she started to wonder.
Are there any other obstacles related to her in this matter?
Upon entering the interrogation room, they found Cheng Lei sitting there, looking very serious. He gestured for the young man to get him a glass of water, while he himself opened his notebook.
"It's like this, Comrade Jiang Yu, your sister Jiang Meier and Lu Yi, both educated youth, insist that you started this trouble. Comrade Bai Na even said that you are involved in the cause of the matter. Could you please explain in detail?"
The statements his colleagues gave him all unanimously blamed Jiang Yu for everything. Cheng Lei's initial sympathy turned into disbelief. If the three of them had conspired, it would be somewhat plausible, but they hadn't crossed paths at all on their way from the youth compound to the police station. Even if someone was wrongly accused, she shouldn't be the sole culprit.
Upon hearing these words, Jiang Yu's expression turned even more disgusting than if she had eaten shit. Seriously, are they out of their minds?
"I had absolutely no idea! Weren't you and your colleagues present when that educated youth gave his account? He kept changing his story; who knew what he was going to say?"
A policeman came in with a glass of water and placed it on the table. After he whispered a few words in Cheng Lei's ear, the man's expression changed drastically.
"Comrade Jiang, I'm sorry, I have some other things to take care of first, I'll come back later."
The two left in a hurry, without even glancing at her before they went. Curious, Jiang Yu deliberately leaned back in her chair, closer to the door, so she could hear what they were saying.
Outside, a policeman handed Cheng Lei a stack of documents and slowly began to speak:
"I just received a call. The higher-ups instructed that Comrade Bai Na is the daughter of a company commander in the military region, and that she has family ties with Commander An. This matter needs to be concluded based on her identity."
Cheng Lei frowned, glanced through the materials in his hand, said nothing, and returned to the interrogation room. Cui Jin, sitting in the hall, disregarded his surroundings and clasped his hands together:
"All done."
This attracted the attention of the staff.
Facing Jiang Yu, Cheng Lei was unsure what to think. This case was the last one he would be responsible for before his promotion; once it was closed, his future would be limitless.
It was precisely at this crucial moment that he was forced to choose between his future and his conscience. The matter itself wasn't significant, but he felt uneasy about rushing through it.
"Comrade Jiang, please tell us the whole story."
Cheng Lei took a sip of tea and focused intently on taking notes. Jiang Yu really didn't want to get involved in their affairs anymore, but if she wanted to leave, she had to make things clear. So, where to begin?
Let me put it this way.
She cleared her throat and began to narrate in a story-like manner. She explained in detail how Lu Yi had pretended to be her savior, demanded benefits, and conspired with his younger sister Jiang Meier to deceive the original owner of the body. Of course, she appropriately omitted the part about the original owner eagerly handing over money. Finally, she took out the bill from her pocket and handed it to Cheng Lei.
"Officer, this is what happened. I suspect that this educated youth, Lu, conspired with those two women to stage this whole charade in order to avoid paying the money he owes me. You can think about it: why would Lu, as the instigator of this whole incident, be able to get two women who were fighting to join forces to slander me? And that brick hit wasn't light either; in serious cases, it could have involved someone's life."
Cheng Lei overheard the gist of the story and felt some sympathy for Jiang Yu. What these people had done was utterly heinous, especially her own sister, who colluded with outsiders to cheat and swindle—why such infighting!
After reviewing the dense list of bills and IOUs, he waved his hand dismissively and took them to confront Lu Yi. He couldn't touch those with connections, but surely he could handle him? Besides, this amount of money would take an ordinary family at least three years to earn; Lu Yi just asked for it and even framed someone to avoid paying—utterly despicable.
About ten minutes later, Bai Na was released on bail. Seeing that she was alone outside, she anxiously asked Cui Jin:
