Chapter 5 Discovering Business Opportunities

Hearing that there was food, especially candied hawthorn, Chen Niannian licked his lips. He had never eaten candied hawthorn before, but he had seen other children eat it. He had secretly picked up the bamboo skewers that others had thrown away and put them in his mouth; they were sweet.

Jiang Yu was unaware of all this; she was in a hurry to leave, and after comforting the child, she left. She had complete trust in Wang Cuihua.

With the year-end approaching, the farm work in the fields was all finished, and few people would go out for a stroll. Jiang Yu didn't encounter many people on the road, and she figured out the route to the city by following the plot.

It took half an hour to walk to the place where we were waiting for the bus.

There weren't many buses in town; you'd only see one every two or three hours. Although it was winter, the midday sun was still quite scorching. Jiang Yu felt exhausted and incredibly thirsty.

She raised her arm to shield her eyes from the sun, and the sound of a motorcycle whirred past her ears. As it approached, it seemed to deliberately accelerate, spraying exhaust fumes into her face.

"Are you out of your mind?"

Jiang Yu was already feeling irritated by the sun, and now she wanted nothing more than to catch up with the car, drag the person out, and give them a piece of her mind.

Fortunately, the car heading into the city entered the surrounding area. Jiang Yu, forgetting her anger, quickly waved to signal them.

He took out two cents from his pocket and bought a ticket.

The man on the motorcycle watched all this through his rearview mirror and a sinister smile appeared on his face.

There weren't many people coming to the city in winter, so Jiang Yu found a seat and sat down. Outside the train window, there were patches of farmland, and the wheat seedlings still had patches of snow that hadn't melted.

The car was bumping so badly that she fell asleep after a short while.

When I opened my eyes again, the outside world was bustling with traffic. Street vendors were calling out their wares, and the buildings on both sides were beginning to take shape as modern structures. Judging by the time, the first real estate company had already been established.

As a young person of the new era, Jiang Yu knows all too well how outrageous housing prices are in the 21st century. Since she's been transported to this world, investing in a house as soon as possible is the most important thing.

However, these are things to consider later. For now, the most important thing is to fill our stomachs.

It was already noon when Jiang Yu got off the bus. She planned to familiarize herself with the surroundings and ask around the city to avoid being scammed. As she walked, she came to the entrance of a factory.

When it was lunchtime, the workers, wearing the cotton-padded coats issued by the factory, walked along the road in groups of three or five.

Jiang Yu noticed that most of them were eating flatbread with water.

"Master, is this all you're eating for lunch? Aren't you going to choke?"

She pointed to the food in the old man's hand, full of doubt. The factory canteen should have food, so why were they all squatting by the roadside eating flatbread?

The experienced craftsman took one look and saw that it was a pretty young girl looking at him with a kind expression.

"In this day and age, it's good enough to have food to eat, so who would be picky? Besides, with such a small monthly salary, and having to support a whole family, we'd be content with just a piece of bread to eat."

The old man picked up a plastic bottle from the side, took a couple of sips of water to rinse it, and seemed quite used to it. Thanks to the establishment of various factories, many villagers now have the opportunity to work outside the village and have extra income. Unlike before, when a family could only rely on their small plot of land and even feeding themselves was a problem.

"Doesn't this factory provide meals?" Jiang Yu asked curiously, pointing to the factory. Her job in the 21st century was as a designer, and the company...

Not only is lunch provided, but there's also afternoon tea time. Other companies, even if they don't offer this benefit, at least provide a meal allowance.

Society gives us extra opportunities to make money, so why think about anything else?

The experienced worker was optimistic and didn't care about such trivial matters. Jiang Yu noticed that many people around her were staring at her, mistaking them for family members of some employee, and would glance at them every now and then.

The original owner was fair-skinned with well-defined features, but after being instigated by Jiang Meier, she always had a dirty face. She said Lu Yi liked that look, and she deliberately concealed her stunning beauty.

Now that she was entering the city, Jiang Yu should at least wash her face and comb her hair. Who knew that her casual attempt to tidy herself up would make her the center of attention?

Noticing something amiss, she wasn't embarrassed. Straightening her clothes, she accidentally felt for some pickled vegetables in her pocket, and in the lining of her clothes, there were also a few crumpled pieces of paper.

Jiang Yu assumed it was just a crumpled piece of paper the original owner had left in the laundry and didn't bother to look at it. She quickly took out the pickled vegetables and gave them to the old cook.

She felt that she had chatted with the master chef for so long, which had taken up his mealtime.

What is this?

The experienced chef glanced at the cabbage, looking puzzled.

"Please try it."

Jiang Yu handed him the dishes, and many onlookers gathered around.

"Isn't this just homemade pickled vegetable? Master Liu, you've never had it before?"

The speaker was a young man, and upon hearing his words, the old master blushed. It wasn't that he had never seen pickled vegetables before, but his family usually didn't pickle cabbage.

Jiang Yu completely ignored him. You should know that her pickled vegetables are pickled differently from others, and you're guaranteed to like them the first time you try them.

"Comrade, your pickled vegetables seem different from everyone else's?"

Another young man came over and couldn't help but take a closer look. It was indeed no different from the ones his mother had pickled, but the color was extremely different.

Its bright luster makes it look very appetizing.

Jiang Yu generously offered it to him to try, and the man pinched a small piece, put it in his mouth, and chewed it gently. Everyone was waiting for his opinion.

"Yes, it's really delicious. How should I put it? It's not just salty, but sweet and sour. The chili on top is very fragrant, making you want to take a second bite."

After his description, many people became eager to try it, pushing the young man who had started earlier aside.

"Comrade, may I have a taste? I'd like to try some too."

Everyone wanted to try it out and see what the sweet and sour pickled vegetables tasted like.

Jiang Yu generously offered the food to everyone, and those who tried it unanimously gave it high praise. An idea began to sprout in her mind.

There are plenty of vegetables in her backyard; she can go back, dig them up, wash them, and bring them to sell at the factory gate the next day.

Just because these people can't afford a boxed lunch that costs one or two yuan doesn't mean they won't buy her cheap pickled vegetables. Thinking of this, a pleased expression appeared on her face.

Making pickled vegetables requires a lot of seasonings, and seeing that more and more people were gathering around, Jiang Yu asked.

"Does anyone know how to get to the cheapest supply and marketing cooperative in the city?"

"He who eats another's food is bound to him." The group of young men, through their detailed responses, finally concluded that the shop two streets away had a complete selection and was inexpensive.

Jiang Yu thanked him, patted the dirt off her trousers, and walked over there.

About ten minutes later, they arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative that the group had mentioned. It was large and well-stocked. She picked out quite a few things, but when she reached for her wallet to pay, she realized she had no money.

In those days, the shop assistants at the supply and marketing cooperative all had a sense of superiority. The woman saw that Jiang Yusheng was good-looking, but didn't seem rich, and looked down on him.

"Tch, if you don't have money, you don't have money. Why are you pretending to be rich? Look at what you're holding. It's worth more than an average person's monthly salary."
