At this moment, Jiang Chun also saw Jiang Yu, but he deliberately turned his head away, pretending not to see her, and continued to complain. In his view, as long as the problem was brought to the village committee, there was no problem that couldn't be solved.
After berating his daughter for being unfilial, he went on to talk about how difficult things had been for him. It was just a few sentences going back and forth, and Jiang Yu was tired of hearing them.
If she weren't worried about the old man finding something out of her, she would have gone crazy on the spot.
"I don't have a thousand yuan. If you really want it, five hundred yuan is the most I can offer. Of course, the prerequisite for giving the money is that the village chiefs of both villages witness and sign an agreement that I will never have anything to do with you again. If you think that's acceptable, then take the money and that's it. If not, there's nothing I can do. Even if you take it to court, you still won't get the money."
Oh, and I should add that the cost of litigation isn't low either.
Jiang Yu found a seat and sat down, then explained in a logical and reasonable manner the solution she had devised on the way.
Listening silently to her methodical and unhurried negotiation, Shen Ying felt a bad premonition. He sensed that this woman's strengths were constantly becoming apparent, while he seemed to be far behind.
He was trying his best to convince himself that Jiang Yu was no longer the woman she used to be, and that everything she did now showed she had good intentions. But the shadows of the past few years seemed to have left a thorn in his heart, and even if he pulled it out, a small hole remained. In the end, he couldn't completely trust her, and all the chaotic emotions he had been experiencing these past few days were brought together by his concern for the two children.
Jiang Chun had thought he'd have to haggle with Jiang Yu for a while longer, but she agreed so quickly, without any effort at all. However, five hundred yuan seemed a bit low; agreeing so easily would be a huge loss for him. But then he saw his eldest daughter's unwavering expression and feared that if he didn't agree, he wouldn't even get the money.
Hesitating for a moment, he looked at Jiang Meier beside him and asked her to make the decision.
Jiang Meier knew that the old man was pretending to discuss things with her, making others mistakenly believe that she had some say in the family. In reality, he was finding someone to take the blame, so that if anything went wrong or if there were any complaints, he would blame it all on her.
Aside from Jiang Dalong peeling candy and eating it, this father and daughter are so cunning that it's an understatement to say they each have eight hundred schemes in their minds.
“Auntie, I might have to trouble you to invite the village chief of Jiang Village. I’m worried that even if you and Uncle He’an act as notaries, they might still try to renege on their promises, and there will still be no way to get through to them.”
Jiang Yu whispered in Song E's ear, which made Jiang Meier crane her neck to eavesdrop. In the end, not only did she not hear anything, but she was also ridiculed by Song E:
"What are you trying to do by stretching your neck out like that? Even if you evolved into a giraffe, it wouldn't make any difference."
Jiang Meier spat angrily, straightened her posture, and looked completely unconcerned.
Song E thought her words made sense. While she and Shen He'an were outside discussing the matter, Jiang Chun couldn't sit still any longer. From the moment she saw Jiang Yu talking to the village chief's wife, she sensed something was amiss. Now they'd even called the village chief—could they be trying to find a way to get him to leave?
“Jiang Yu, let me tell you, no matter how many tricks you have up your sleeve, you can’t shake us off. I’ll not only make a big scene and keep you from having a peaceful time, but I’ll also find this kid’s unit and report him to the police as well.”
He pointed at Jiang Yu, then at Shen Ying, with a look that said, "You'll be sorry." He hadn't called his son-in-law by name because he simply didn't remember what the other man's name was.
"You might get arrested and locked up for a few days for causing trouble."
Shen Ying, who had remained silent until now, spoke coldly. In his view, love for children was genuine, love for women was merely a facade, and he didn't need to give any face to the whole family of vampires in front of him.
Jiang Chun didn't know his son-in-law's true strength, but from what others said, he knew this man was not to be underestimated. Since he couldn't afford to offend him, he would vent all his dissatisfaction on Jiang Yu.
"You good-for-nothing! I should have drowned you after your sister was born, so you wouldn't have eaten so much of our food. Instead, you've made me go through all this trouble and made me angry."
By the end, the wrinkles on his face had all bunched up, revealing a visibly ferocious expression.
"So you need to hand over the cause of my mother's death to the police? Or do you think I have no idea at all? The rat poison was bought by Jiang Dalong, the rice soup was cooked by Jiang Meier, and the one who forced her to drink it was you—her bedmate, Jiang Chun."
She was the only one who wasn't involved in this whole affair, and she was kept in the dark the entire time. The reason was that her mother had treated her fairly well before she died; compared to the viciousness of this family, she was the only one who occasionally ensured she had enough to eat.
The person who orchestrated all of this was worried that the original owner's involvement would alert others, so they prevented her from interfering in anything, which conveniently cleared her of suspicion.
They thought they had done everything perfectly, but little did they know that the original owner had seen everything.
However, she showed no empathy for the mother in the original owner's memories. She appeared to be a pure and innocent person, but in reality, she had always been plotting against the original owner while she was alive. Although she didn't show it, it was obvious to anyone with discerning eyes.
When the secret from eight years ago was revealed again, the family was so guilty that they wanted to poison Jiang Yu, the person in the know, to death.
Jiang Dalong was still young at the time and didn't know that his father had given him money to buy rat poison. He only remembered that his father had given him an extra dollar that day so he could buy candy at the corner store.
He pointed at the father and daughter with disbelief, his face trembling with anger:
"You are the ones who killed my mother and made me a laughingstock since I was a child, a wild child without a mother. It's all your fault."
Jiang Dalong rushed forward to hit his father, but was stopped by Jiang Chun's reprimand. His tone softened.
