Lin Yinan didn't react at all, not even frowning.
"Can I try again?" Yun Mo wanted to try one more time.
"Master, it's impossible. The Third Madam is pregnant."
Yun Mo put Lin Yinan down, carefully covered her with a blanket, and said to Qian Wu beside him, "Keep a close eye on her."
After getting out of the carriage, he said to Yun, "Tell them to pack up quickly and set off immediately."
He had a bad feeling; Lin Yinan's drowsiness was getting worse. He couldn't afford to delay on the road any longer and had to get to the South as soon as possible to see if there was any other way.
Lin Yinan woke up at noon on the third day, by which time the team had stopped to rest.
After she finished taking care of her physiological needs, Yun Mo had already received the news and rushed over.
"Anan, you're awake!"
Lin Yinan looked him up and down; his dark circles were from his brother's beating, and they hadn't faded yet.
If he really made a move, Lin Yiheng would be no match for him. Yun Mo was only doing this to eliminate the resentment Lin Yiheng harbored towards him.
"If you have any questions, go ahead and ask."
"Gurgle," Lin Yinan's stomach rumbled at just the right moment.
Here, Qianwu brought out the food.
Yun Mo took the cake, handed it to her, and then gently blew on a large bowl of thick meat porridge.
Lin Yinan was starving. She took big bites of the pancake, and then, finding it too slow to be fed, she simply took the bowl herself and shoveled food into her mouth.
After finishing her meal, she let out a satisfied burp.
Lin Yinan was sitting against the carriage, preparing to have a good chat with Yun Mo, when suddenly double images began to appear before her eyes.
"Shift!" she said only once, then her head lolled to the side and she fell into a deep sleep again.
Seeing her like this, Yun Mo's heart sank little by little. He reached out and pulled her into his arms, his palm-sized hand caressing her swollen belly, as if the thing inside her had fallen into a deep sleep.
He felt a sudden panic for no reason and bent down to press his ear against it.
"Thump thump thump!" The loud and strong heartbeats indicate that the baby in my belly is doing well.
Yun Mo's face was tense, and his dark eyes seemed to be brewing a storm. He opened the car door and met Lin Yiheng's eyes as he rushed over.
Lin Yiheng caught a glimpse of Lin Yinan, who was already lying down, and his outstretched hand froze in mid-air.
"Are you satisfied now?" Yun Mo said this and left.
Two days later, the team could not find any more drinking water sources along the way since they had encountered the same spring, and the villagers' food supplies were gradually dwindling.
The prolonged coma caused Lin Yinan to lose weight rapidly, her cheeks became deeply sunken, and her belly appeared unusually large despite her small amount of flesh.
Yun Mo knelt on the carriage all day. His eyes were slightly red, and his hands, hanging down in his sleeves, trembled uncontrollably. He slowly closed his eyes, a hint of moisture rising in the corners of his eyes, as if some kind of pain was tearing his chest apart.
"Anan, please wake up, okay?" he murmured to himself.
As if sensing his emotions, the little thing in Lin Yinan's belly kicked suddenly.
"Hiss!" Lin Yinan cried out in pain, her hand instinctively going to her stomach.
Her hand was immediately grasped by a large hand, and the person speaking was filled with surprise.
"Anan, you're awake!"
Lin Yinan slowly sat up with his help. Only a faint light shone through the crack in the car door; it was already night.
She withdrew her hand and placed her palm open in front of Yun Mo.
Yun Mo was puzzled, thinking she wanted food from him. "Wait a minute, I'll go get it for you right away."
"Watch carefully!" Lin Yinan's voice was a little hoarse after a long period of unconsciousness.
As she spoke, a carton of milk, an apple, and several protein bars appeared out of thin air in her hand. In front of him, Lin Yinan inserted the straw into the milk carton, tore open the protein bars and drank them down in two gulps, then ate the apple while drinking the milk.
After finishing the meal, the milk carton and apple core disappeared into thin air. She then found two calcium tablets and put them in her mouth.
Yun Mo stared at her intently, unable to look away. He couldn't understand why Anan could conjure food out of thin air, even though he didn't recognize any of the words on the food.
Is Anan a fairy from heaven?
That dazed feeling returned. Lin Yinan took out an injection needle and stabbed it hard into several painful acupoints that Yun Wu had previously treated. Lin Yinan was immediately in so much pain that he broke out in a cold sweat.
Just as Yun Mo was about to stop her, Lin Yinan's voice trembled with pain, "Help me out."
After getting off the carriage, Lin Yinan found herself unsteady on her feet, so Yun Mo scooped her up in his arms.
"Do you need to pee?"
"no."
Hearing the noise, Lin Yiheng quickly came to the carriage. "Anan, you're awake!"
"Brother, take me for a walk."
Lin Yiheng understood what his sister was going to do, and led her to his family's water cart, where the large water tank was already empty.
Lin Yinan put her hand into the water tank, and a stream of water quickly flowed from her palm into the tank.
Yun Mo looked shocked and suddenly looked up at Lin Yiheng. The reason why Anan had fallen asleep by the spring that day was because Anan was collecting water.
So, this is the secret between the siblings: Anan is a little fairy with magical powers.
The three of them walked along the procession, filling the buckets of water from each household. Just as they were about to fall asleep, Lin Yinan fiercely pricked her own acupoints with a needle.
After filling all the water pouches, water tanks, and wooden buckets belonging to the Yun family's secret guards with water, Lin Yinan could no longer hold on and fell into a deep sleep against Yun Mo's broad chest.
Yun Mo's heart ached. "A'Nan is a fairy, so is she leaving?"
Lin Yiheng did not explain.
In March, Nandu County was like a wasteland, hot and sunny, with not a drop of rain.
Drought is like a ferocious monster, mercilessly tearing the earth apart with its tentacles, taking away the vitality and moisture from the land.
Looking around, there wasn't a single patch of green to be seen, and many trees had their bark stripped off.
The carriage struggled to travel on the dusty, muddy road, often getting stuck and needing to be lifted out.
The sun was so strong that it stung the exposed skin.
Those displaced people who could not walk sat or lay on the ground, motionless, their fate unknown.
With the water that Lin Yinan had replenished for the team last night, everyone got up early and set off. As for the water that had come out of nowhere, Yun Mo told the village chief that the secret guards had brought it from somewhere else last night.
Lin Yiheng sat on the cart with a sorrowful expression, his gaze shifting to the refugees falling one after another on the road. Beside him, Old Mrs. Zhao, with her head wrapped in a headscarf, kept her head down and remained silent, lost in her own thoughts.
Beneath a withered, dead tree sat a ragged refugee, his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling slightly. Green-headed flies, drawn by the scent of death, were waiting for him to breathe his last so they could feast on him.
The displaced man, thoroughly annoyed, raised his hand to shoo them away, revealing his arm beneath his sleeve, which looked no different from a withered branch.
Lin Yiheng suddenly jumped off the car, but his legs gave way and he fell face-first into the mud.
Thinking he was losing his balance, Old Mrs. Zhao quickly exclaimed, "Stop the car! The yoke has fallen off!"
Ignoring the mud covering his body, Lin Yiheng scrambled to the refugee's side.
