"Before the Hu people entered the pass, even though we had to pay all sorts of exorbitant taxes, the people were safe and could barely make ends meet. Now that the Hu people are attacking, the court is not only not going to resist, but is just short of opening the gates to let the Hu people into the city. They don't care about the lives of our people."
Lin Yiheng felt heavy-hearted, even somewhat confused. What was the point of his studies?
When a dynasty prospers, the people suffer; when a dynasty falls, the people suffer.
Lin Yinan glanced at him. No matter where she was, all she wanted was to survive. The greater good of the nation and its people was too far removed from her.
With that thought in mind, she quickened the pace of picking up the things in her hands.
There were two horses grazing in the grass not far away. She trotted over, took the reins, and the two horses obediently followed her.
She tied the collected supplies to the horse's back one by one, and secretly stuffed a few bags of grain into her spatial storage.
"Anan, is there any hope for this horse?" Lin Yiheng asked, pointing to an injured horse lying on the ground.
Just then, Yun Mo happened to pass by. He squatted down and took a look. "His leg is injured and useless. Kill him."
"Killed?"
"Yes, kill them and eat them."
Lin Yinan also came over. She drew her knife and slashed the horse's throat. The horse fell to the ground, convulsing continuously.
"How am I supposed to carry this back? It's so heavy!" Lin Yiheng wondered.
"Let those two horses pull."
As Lin Yinan spoke, she picked up two thick tree branches and made a makeshift stretcher, which she then tied to the two horses.
Lin Yiheng wanted to take the horse's reins, but seeing that his arm was injured, Lin Yinan snatched the reins from him.
"Brother, let me do it."
"Aren't we going to wait for Young Master Yun and the others?"
The brother and sister looked towards Yun Mo's direction; two of their guards were dead, and several others were injured.
Yun Mo and his men dug two pits and hastily buried the person.
"No need. We don't know how Mother and the others are doing. We need to go back quickly."
We're just traveling the same way. They outnumber us, so who knows if they might turn around and try to steal our things?
There are two things in this world that cannot be looked at directly: the sun and the human heart.
She experienced quite a few things like this during the apocalypse.
Lin Yinan was leading two horses, each carrying several bags of grain looted by the Hu people, and dragging a dead horse behind them.
Lin Yinan hadn't walked far when she noticed someone following her.
Why are you following us?
Lin Yiheng turned around and saw that the boy who had saved him earlier was following behind him.
He was leading a horse with a little girl of seven or eight sitting on its back. He had gathered food and supplies on both sides of the horse, and a brand-new wooden bucket was particularly eye-catching.
Upon hearing this, the boy knelt down in front of the brother and sister with a thud.
"My parents were killed by the Hu people, and my younger sister is still young. Please, kind young master and lady, take us in."
The little girl on horseback trembled all over when her brother mentioned their murdered parents, and her big, bright eyes instantly filled with tears.
"Brother," she called softly.
Lin Yiheng was in a dilemma. They themselves were barely able to take care of themselves, so how could they take in the brother and sister?
Lin Yinan pursed her lips and watched coldly. The first rule of survival in the apocalypse is the least saintly, and it applies to this time as well.
The Lin family consisted of both the elderly and the young. If it weren't for the fact that this family had treated the original owner of this body well, she would have given up long ago.
The boy is skilled, brave, and resourceful. Despite losing both parents, he can still protect his younger sister and survive anywhere.
With that in mind, Lin Yinan stopped worrying about it.
"If you want to come, then come. But there's one thing: you and your siblings have to take care of yourselves."
At this moment, Yun Mo was leading five horses, with two dead horses dragging behind them. On the backs of the horses were three injured people, two of whom were unconscious and looked to be seriously injured.
Lin Yiheng nodded to Yun Mo behind him, and then continued walking into the mountains with Lin Yinan.
Because of this delay, I don't know how far my mother and uncles have gone.
The two groups continued their journey deeper into the mountains and forests.
Yun Mo walked behind, his eyes occasionally glancing at the tall, slender figure in front of him. The intense killing intent emanating from Lin Yinan earlier could not have been cultivated without enduring countless trials and tribulations in the midst of carnage.
I couldn't understand where she, a young lady from a respectable family, got such a murderous aura.
What exactly happened to her after Pingcheng?
An hour later, it was already bright daylight.
Yun Mo successfully made contact with the guards who had come to gather information.
Led by the guards, Lin Yinan successfully found Li Shulan. Besides Lin Tiezhu's wife and her family, what surprised her most was that Su Yunzhi's family was also there.
However, their carriage was lost, leaving only some grain and supplies carried on the backs of two mules.
Seeing Lin Yinan covered in blood, Li Shulan burst into tears and looked her up and down.
"Why is there so much blood? Where are you injured?"
"My dear Nan, where are you hurt?" Old Mrs. Zhao's hands trembled as she tried to touch Lin Yinan, but she didn't know where to start.
A warm feeling washed over Lin Yinan; it was the first time in over a decade that someone had shown her such concern.
"He was not injured; it was the blood of the Hu people."
Li Shulan seemed not to hear, sobbing as she tried to wipe the congealed blood from her face with a handkerchief, but Lin Yinan stopped her.
"It's already dried out, you can't wipe it off, you have to wash it with water."
"Sister, sister."
Lin Yi'an shouted at Lin Yinan from his horse and struggled to get off.
Lin Shuo quickly untied the ropes binding the two men and helped them off the horse.
The two pounced on Lin Yinan like cannonballs, completely disregarding the bloodstains covering her.
"Mother, we need to find a place with water to stop and rest," Lin Yiheng said at the right moment.
When Grandma Zhao heard her eldest grandson's voice, she turned around and looked at him, noticing a tear in his clothes.
"Heng'er, you're injured!"
