Chapter 5 Burning the City Gate

He was highly skilled in martial arts, and after hacking and slashing at the Hu people, he carved a bloody path for the carriage.

The closer you get to the city gate, the more Hu people there are on guard.

The carriage gradually slowed down. Seeing that things were not going well, Lin Yinan quickly drew his bow and shot the Hu people who were rushing up from a distance.

Many more Hu people ran towards the city gate from behind.

The man in black slashed down two Hu men in quick succession, then turned to Lin Yinan and shouted, "Go! Don't stop, let the horses charge out!"

Lin Yinan put away his bow and arrows, gripped the reins tightly with his right hand, and lashed the horse's back hard with his left. The horse, in pain, spurred its hooves and charged toward the city gate.

The man in black leaped into the air and swung his sword forcefully at the Hu people at the city gate, instantly felling a large number of them.

Lin Yinan was dumbfounded. Could this be the legendary sword energy?

Eight Akhal-Teke horses trampled over the fallen Hu people and galloped out of the city in the blink of an eye.

The man in black didn't linger in the fight, following closely behind the carriage. He kicked four or five barricades used as roadblocks on both sides of the city gate to the center of the gate, untied the tung oil hanging from his waist, sprinkled it on the barricades, and threw two cans of it onto the two heavy city gates.

Seeing the Hu people chasing after him, his eyes turned icy cold. He took out a tinderbox, blew on it, and threw it out.

"Boom!" Flames shot up from the city gate in an instant, successfully halting the Hu people's pursuit.

The man in black glanced back, then leaped into the direction where the carriage had disappeared.

Lin Yinan drove eight horses for ten miles before stopping. Just as she peeked out to see if the man in black had followed, she saw the man in black approach the carriage with his sword.

What happened next?

“I set a fire at the city gate, which temporarily halted the Hu people’s pursuit.” The man in black went to untie the reins of his horse, and then continued, “I don’t think it will hold them off for long. Let’s split up. You take the child up the mountain, and I’ll bring up the rear to draw the Hu people away.”

"good."

Hearing their conversation from inside the carriage, Lin Yi hugged Lin Yinan tightly, crying, "Sister, I'm so scared!"

"Sister is here, don't be afraid." Lin Yinan pulled his hand away and easily jumped off the carriage.

The man in black led over two horses. "These two horses are quite docile."

Lin Yinan hung the bow and arrows on her back and said to Lin Yi'an, "Come on, Yi'an, let me carry you out of the carriage."

Upon seeing this, three children in the carriage obediently moved onto the carriage floor.

Lin Yinan remembered these three children; they were children of the same clan.

Knowing that the masked woman in black was Lin Yinan's sister, the children pouted, their faces still showing shock, their eyes brimming with tears, looking like they wanted to cry but dared not.

They shouted:

"Sister Anan".

"Sister Anan".

"Sister Anan".

When the two eight-year-old children saw Lin Yinan's outstretched hand, they opened their mouths, instinctively wanting to avoid her. After hesitating for half a second, they decisively rushed into her arms.

Anan felt incredibly safe in her arms.

There was another child huddled up in the carriage with his head down, so Lin Yinan went up and picked him up.

The poor child was terrified and flailed his arms and legs, kicking and hitting Lin Yinan.

Lin Yi'an anxiously said from the side, "Lu Changqing, you're not allowed to hit my sister."

"Don't be afraid, I'll take you away," Lin Yinan said softly.

Hearing her words, the child relaxed completely and let her hold him.

After experiencing such an event, the children were all frightened to varying degrees, especially Lu Changqing, who was the same age as Lin Yi'an. He was completely stunned and did not respond when called.

The man in black glanced at the children and asked the two older ones, "Which of you can ride a horse?"

Lin Yongzhi and Lin Daoqin exchanged a glance, then stepped forward and whispered, "We studied at the academy."

"Then you two can ride this horse together," the man in black said, lifting the two boys onto the horse's back.

The children used to ride small ponies at the academy. It was their first time riding a tall horse, and they were so scared that they lay flat on its back.

Seeing this, the man in black gave them a few more words of advice on horseback riding.

Lu Changqing clung to Lin Yinan like an octopus, refusing to get down.

Helpless, Lin Yinan tore off a strip of cloth, carried him on her back, and helped Lin Yi'an onto the horse. With her feet on the saddle, she used the momentum to flip herself onto the horse.

The movements were fluid and clean.

The man in black froze in mid-air with his outstretched hand. He reluctantly withdrew it, turned around, and took out a bundle and two water bags from the carriage.

"Here are some flatbreads for you to take on your journey."

The man in black acted very efficiently, and Lin Yinan didn't hesitate, taking the straps and tying them to her body.

She nodded slightly to the man in black. "Thank you for your help, hero. We'll meet again someday. Farewell."

With his face covered by a black cloth, the man in black opened his mouth, then swallowed back what he wanted to say and cupped his hands in a gesture of respect towards Lin Yinan.

Lin Yinan pushed off the horse's belly, turned it around, and led the child towards the mountains and forests.

Until Lin Yinan and the others disappeared into the forest, the man in black sighed inwardly. This woman was highly skilled in martial arts, her archery was unerring, and she was calm and decisive, in no way inferior to a man.

He glanced in the direction of the city gate and could faintly hear the sound of horses' hooves. He got into the carriage, cracked the whip, and the carriage slowly moved forward.

Lin Yinan rode his horse around the mountains and forests to where Li Shulan was hiding.

Li Shulan hid in the thicket of thorns. Hearing the approaching sound of horses' hooves, she gripped her dagger and trembled with fear.

Lin Yinan was very considerate. She stopped a short distance away and called out softly, "Mom, I'm back."

Upon hearing Lin Yinan's voice, Li Shulan immediately lowered her guard.

Lin Yinan dismounted from her horse, and Lin Yi'an wanted to follow, but she pressed him down, saying, "Stay put, we'll leave right away after we pick up Mother."

Li Shulan bent down and emerged from the disguised thicket of thorns.

"Mother!" In the darkness, Lin Yi'an spotted his mother's blurry figure at a glance and called out excitedly.

"Don't make a sound! There are barbarians everywhere down the mountain." Lin Yinan whispered a warning, moving the thorns back to their original position.

Li Shulan followed the sound to Lin Yi'an's side, hugged his leg, and cried in a low voice, "Yi'an'er, Mother has finally seen you."

"Mother! Mother!" Lin Yi'an cried, tears streaming down her face, her voice choked with sobs, "Father was killed by the barbarians!"

Li Shulan rested her head on her son's lap, her shoulders heaving, afraid to cry out loud.

She had already imagined that the Hu people would massacre the city today, but hearing her son say it with her own ears extinguished any remaining hope she had.

Lin Yinan walked over, pulled Li Shulan aside, and reached out to feel her forehead. Her temperature was normal; she didn't have a fever.

"Mother, come and sit on the other horse." Lin Yinan said, pulling her to the horse where Lin Yongzhi and Lin Daoqin were sitting.

The two children called out softly, "Auntie."

Li Shulan recognized the voices as those of the village children and quickly said, "Good children, you should leave here with your aunt and Sister Anan."

Lin Yinan helped her onto the horse. Li Shulan was still injured, so he gave her some more instructions before she mounted the horse herself.
