Chapter 238 I had a nightmare

Based on the feedback from Ah Da and the others after their first day of work.

The next day, almost everyone in Baisha Village, except for the elderly and children, went to register.

During the rest of my service, the meals provided by the Longtan County government were quite good every day.

Some villagers who were initially worried about not having enough to eat and even secretly brought their own food eventually stopped bringing any.

With better food, everyone was able to eat their fill, and their strength naturally returned.

With such good treatment, everyone in the village worked very hard, and the task of repairing the irrigation canals for the village was completed ahead of schedule.

After digging the irrigation canal, everyone worked together to build the road.

As the saying goes, if you want to get rich, build roads first.

The roads connecting each village to Longtan County will be opened up to facilitate villagers' travel and the transportation of agricultural products.

After solving the problem of food and clothing, Lin Yinan's next plan is to develop planting or breeding industries based on local characteristics and suitable local resources.

The official road connecting Longtan and Changyi also needs to be repaired, leveled, and widened on the existing foundation.

No matter how fierce the fighting might be in the north, they only wished to settle down and build a career in the south.

The weight of national affairs and family matters was too heavy for them. In times of prosperity, all they received were endless exorbitant taxes and levies, and in times of chaos, they could not even protect their own lives.

The Zhong family sent five men with big sticks, but they never expected that they would go to the Dragon Pool full of confidence and return questioning their existence.

Upon arriving at Longtan, they easily blended into the corvée labor force.

When the road was first being built, everyone assumed that the five guys peeking around were from the other village.

It wasn't until the secret agents investigated and discovered that these five people were almost nowhere to be found in any of the villages.

Therefore, the secret guards reported the findings.

At that time, Lin Yinan was looking at the expenditure ledgers in the county government office. The county government's expenses were getting bigger and bigger. If it weren't for the expenses brought by the Chen family's salt, it would have been unable to make ends meet long ago.

Yun Mo, who was recuperating from his injuries, spent most of his time with his wife and daughter, except for the occasional visit to the city walls and horse farm. He was a complete wife-lover.

"This is a report from the secret guards, take a look." Lin Yinan handed the briefing in her hand to Yun Mo, who was holding his daughter.

Yun Mo frowned, his expression showing a hint of impatience. He took the note with one hand and quickly read through its contents.

“Aren’t we short of manpower for road construction? No matter whose people they are, don’t let them leave until they finish their corvée labor. It’s just two meals a day, we can afford it,” Yun Mo said coolly.

Lin Yinan looked up at him in astonishment. When did this person learn such despicable tricks?

Seeing her expression, Yun Mo grumbled in dissatisfaction, "Just tell me, isn't that right?"

Lin Yinan: That makes so much sense, she was speechless.

"Then give instructions to your guards."

Yun Mo nodded to him, giving him a reassuring look, holding Nineteen in one arm and writing furiously on the paper with the other.

Upon receiving the reply, the guard smiled slyly. What was so difficult about this?

The Indians didn't get any useful information from the corvée labor team. They were just a bunch of peasants who spent all their time discussing what to eat tomorrow or the little things about men and women in bed at night. It was incredibly boring.

On the first night, Ah San wanted to leave with his men.

Finally, when it was late at night and all was quiet, I woke up my subordinates who were exhausted after a long day of listening to gossip.

The five of them quietly slipped out of the temporary camp and ran off towards their next destination in high spirits.

Suddenly, amidst a strange cry, the five people felt a blur before their eyes, a heaviness in their heads, and instantly collapsed to the ground, unable to get up.

"Boss, what should we do with them?" one of the guards asked another.

The squad leader of the secret guards said, "Carry them back. The master said that they must not leave until the road is repaired."

So, in the darkness of twilight, five dark figures, each carrying a humanoid object on their back, raced toward the temporary labor camp.

The next day, Ah San woke up still somewhat bewildered.

He clearly remembered that they had walked ten miles last night, so how come he woke up still in the temporary labor camp?

The others barely remembered what happened last night, thinking it was all a dream, and quickly adjusted their mindset to get back to work for the new day.

The next night, after everyone had fallen asleep, Ah San led four of his men to run along the predetermined route.

After running for half the night, they found themselves back five miles from the camp.

Finally, exhausted from running, Ah San and the others collapsed on the ground.

"Third Brother, I can't go on anymore, I can't walk."

"I'm so sleepy, Third Brother."

Ah San was too exhausted to speak. He closed his eyes and waved to the group, saying he couldn't run anymore and that they could do whatever they wanted.

When he opened his eyes again, Ah San jumped up from the bed in horror.

What? How did they end up back at the temporary camp for forced labor?

"Hey, you guys, why aren't you up yet? Are you trying to slack off?" A villager poked his head in and said sarcastically to the five Indians inside.

These five men, from who-knows-which village, were listless during the day, fell asleep as soon as they lay down at night, and couldn't be woken up in the morning. They ate as much as the pigs in the sty, more than any of them.

"Okay, I'm up, I'm coming."

To avoid arousing suspicion, Ah San, sporting huge dark circles under his eyes, woke up his four companions.

The five men, utterly dejected, carried their hoes and shovels and followed the villagers to work.

On the third night, Ah San and his four men walked for half the night in the mountains.

When they woke up, they found themselves surrounded by villagers.

"Hey, you're awake! You're awake!"

The villagers breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that they had woken up.

"How did the four of you end up outside?"

"Ah! A ghost!"

Ah San struggled to sit up and looked around, only to find that they were sleeping in a grove of trees not far from the kitchen.
