Wang Lan was shocked. "Oh dear, Da Yun, quickly carry your uncle to the guest room to sleep."
Qin Xiaozhou was dumbfounded. Li Changpu really didn't drink alcohol. She thought that drinking would affect people's nerves. He practiced medicine and took pulses to prescribe medicine, and he was afraid that if he drank too much, his hands would shake and he would not be able to take the pulse accurately, so he didn't drink. It turned out that he would faint just from the smell.
After a chaotic night, Zhao Fang opened her eyes as dawn broke.
Wang Lan woke up as soon as she moved a finger, and wanted to rush over to her, "Son, are you awake? It's good that you're awake, it's good that you're awake."
Lu Yunfeng got up from his makeshift bed on the floor. "Mother, how are you feeling?"
Zhao Fang opened her mouth, but even the slightest movement made her head throb with pain. "Dayun, it's alright, Mother is alright."
As she finished speaking, tears streamed down her face. She had wanted to die then. The river wasn't high, not even as tall as two people. The riverbed was full of stones, and she thought that only by falling into the stones could she die. She never expected to come back to life.
Lu Yunfeng held her hand and said, "Mother, Uncle said that you're fine now that you're awake. Drink some water and rest well. I'll ask Uncle to come and take your pulse."
Lu Yunfeng found the guest room at the front. Zhao's two uncles had already gotten up and were chopping firewood in the yard. Granny Guo was carrying firewood to start a fire to make breakfast.
Li Changpu was still asleep, her cheeks flushed, completely unaware of her surroundings.
It wasn't until mid-morning, after the Lu family had finished eating and Zhao's two uncles had gone to the orchard to feed the chickens and ducks and clean the chicken coop, that Li Changpu finally stumbled out of the guest room, still half asleep.
Li Changpu squinted and tried to find her way to the kitchen to fetch water to wash her face, following her memory.
When Granny Guo saw that he had woken up, she quickly fetched water for him, saying, "Young master, you're awake. Go wash your face."
He was startled, his mind cleared instantly, and he realized he wasn't at home. His face flushed red, and he stammered, "Thank you, Auntie, I'll wash my face right away."
After washing her face, she rushed to the backyard. "Mother-in-law, mother-in-law, has my sister-in-law woken up? Is everything alright?"
He actually fell asleep drunk in the face of such a serious illness; it's truly shameful.
Wang Lan quickly let him in, "Your sister-in-law woke up once this morning, drank some water, and fell asleep again. Go and check if she's alright."
That morning, Wang Lan listened to Zhao Fang's heartbeat and breathing countless times, fearing that she might just fall asleep and die.
Li Changpu didn't even have time to apologize before going inside to take the woman's pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Mother-in-law, don't worry. My sister-in-law is out of danger, but she has lost too much blood and is weak. She needs to rest more."
It will probably take her a year or two to recover some of her energy and vitality. She's been suffering from severe anemia these past few months, which may cause frequent dizziness, blurred vision, and weakness. Please be patient with her; she'll recover once her blood and energy are restored.
"Okay, okay." Wang Lan's eyes were filled with tears as she kept wiping them away. She had been on tenterhooks all night, and as soon as she relaxed, she couldn't hold on any longer and almost fell over.
"As long as people can live, that's good enough. Xiao Si is still so young. I'm just afraid of parents outliving their children."
She had experienced that excruciating pain just three years ago, and she dared not go through it again.
Li Changpu escorted Wang Lan back into the house. "Mother-in-law, as long as my sister-in-law is recovering, everything will be fine. Don't worry about her. Her leg injury is already bad, so she should rest now and not worry about anything."
Having experienced great sorrow three years ago, and then suffering a leg injury and bleeding a month ago, which had already damaged my health, I stayed up all night last night and dared not rest.
Wang Lan's health was like that of a frail old man, and he wouldn't last another two or three years. He couldn't say that, so he could only advise people to rest more.
Li Changpu was brewing medicine in the front yard again when Granny Guo gave him a steamed bun and a bowl of soy milk. "Young master, eat these first to fill your stomach. Lunch will be served in an hour."
Li Changpu finished eating hastily and was about to take the medicine he had prepared to the backyard.
Qin Xiaozhou shoved Xiao Si into his arms, saying, "Uncle, could you look after Xiao Si for me? I'll take this medicine to my mother-in-law."
The Lu family was relieved, but the news spread throughout the village: "I heard that Zhao Fang's forehead wound was so long that the doctor stitched it up with needle and thread, it looks like a centipede."
"You can sew human flesh back together with needle and thread?" The speaker shuddered and hissed, "That would hurt so much."
"Wang Shugen is truly a scoundrel. If he had really killed someone, I'm afraid he wouldn't have survived either."
“Killing someone is punishable by beheading. Even if the authorities don’t behead him, the Lu family won’t let him off easily.”
"Do you think Zhao Fang has woken up yet? I heard from Wang Dahe's mother that when she went there last night, the person was like a dead person. Everyone in the room was talking, but Zhao Fang's eyelids didn't even move."
"I'm still a relative of the Lu family, so I should go and visit. Sister-in-law, are you going?"
"Go, of course I'll go! What do you want to take? I don't have anything good to take. Sigh, I only have one old hen at home. It didn't lay eggs properly because of the cold weather a few days ago. It only laid two eggs these past two days now that spring has arrived. I was originally thinking of giving them to my youngest son to help him get better. He was sick last year and hasn't gotten better. He was just hoping to eat an egg. Now, well, he won't be able to eat eggs again."
Seven or eight women looked worried. Eggs are such a good thing. Many people don't eat an egg for three to five months. Now they have to go to see a doctor or visit relatives. They can't go empty-handed or bring too many pickled vegetables.
The only decent thing about the village is eggs, but we don't have any.
After a few more complaints, they all went home.
The village chief, lying in bed, had just finished taking a bowl of medicine. "Eldest brother," he said, "go to the Lu family and see if they've woken up yet."
No matter what, Wang Shugen is still a member of the Wang family. The village chief doesn't want him to die. Moreover, if Zhao Fang really dies and Wang Shugen becomes a murderer, the Lu family will definitely take the matter to the yamen. Then everyone in the surrounding villages will know that there is a murderer in Wangjia Village, and it will be difficult for those unmarried young men to find wives.
He probably won't get a good look from the township head in the future.
