Chapter 24 Inheritance and Rebirth

Wang Lan was very happy today. She took out the money her eldest grandson had given her a few days ago, picked up a basket, and went to the village to buy tofu. She smiled at everyone she met. When asked, she didn't tell the truth. She only said that the weather was better and her legs felt more comfortable than in winter. She grew up in the village and knew best that villagers couldn't stand seeing others doing well.

The village chief's wife also came to buy tofu. "Young lady, you look much better. Winter is cold and hard to bear, but you'll get through it. Things will get better in the future. I see that your family has started raising chickens halfway up the mountain."

Wang Lan smiled and said, "I raised two hens. I have children at home, and I'm afraid they won't survive if they don't eat a couple of eggs."

The villagers thought of the Lu family's posthumous child, "The child really needs to eat something good."

Wang Lan returned home, picked up her grandson, and went out again. Qin Xiaozhou took the basket and prepared to make tofu, egg, and wild vegetable soup for lunch. Zhao Fen's health was also improving, and now Wang Lan was taking care of Xiao Si.

Most of the women in the village with children would take them to the willow tree in the middle of the village. A river flows from south to north beside the willow tree, and people wash clothes and vegetables by the river, chatting and gossiping together. They were all surprised to see Lu Xiaosi, since the number of times a child who is almost one year old has been taken out can be counted on one hand. Now, Wang Lan actually brought her grandson out.

Li Xiumei was seven months pregnant. Her husband's family valued the first child, so she was relatively relaxed. At this moment, she smiled and said, "Grandma Lu, you're here too. This child is so handsome."

Lu Xiaosi has handsome features and fair skin. He has been eating eggs every day for the past month, which has made his face round and very cute.

Wang Lan held her grandson and said, "You're so good-looking, the one in your belly must be handsome too."

Li Xiumei was pleased to hear this, touched Xiao Si's face, and pulled his hand, "Grandma Lu is an elderly woman in the village, so I will take your kind words to heart."

The villagers were curious about Lu Xiaosi. After all, many people had said they wouldn't be able to raise him, but look at him now, he's old enough to be carried around. After looking at the child, they talked about the strange things happening in the village. Some people complained about Zhou Meixiang going to the mountains to dig for wild vegetables the day before yesterday and stealing the portion that someone else had seen. However, no one mentioned Cuihua's matter. Everyone knew perfectly well that ghost marriages were something that people considered unlucky to talk about, and they were afraid of getting involved, so they kept quiet about it.

As the sun grew higher, Wang Lan returned with her grandson. Early that morning, Lu Yunfeng had gone to check the place where the traps had been set in the mountains and wouldn't be back until evening, so he wasn't there for dinner.

In the afternoon, after Qin Xiaozhou finished planting peanuts, he went to the chicken coop halfway up the mountain, carried a bucket of water, poured two ladles of Sichuan peppercorns on it, and then washed the chicken trough and changed the water.

Lu Yan returned carrying a bamboo pole, wiping away sweat. "Sister-in-law, these chickens are really good at running."

The yellow downy feathers that came with the chickens have now been replaced with brownish-gray feathers. They're about the size of pigeons now. The free-range hens lay eggs very frequently, enough for the whole family to eat every two days.

Lu Yunxing fertilized the fruit trees every day, leaving the weeding to the chickens and ducks. He only needed to fertilize, but after another half month without rain, he looked at the orchard with great concern.

In the evening, Lu Yunfeng carried back a rabbit and a pheasant. There were many baby rabbits in the spring. He brought back a litter with two adults and five babies, so he wove a bamboo basket to raise them in the yard.

After the meal, Lu Yu took out a set of clothes and gave them to Qin Xiaozhou, saying, "Niece-in-law, try this on."

The last time we bought fabric, everyone in the family got a new outfit. Qin Xiaozhou's outfit was the last one to be made. Lu Yu lowered her head and said, "If there's anything that doesn't fit, I'll alter it. You're the only one in the family who doesn't have a new outfit. If you lose weight in the future, I'll alter it anytime."

Qin Xiaozhou was relieved. Although Lu Yu seemed a bit withdrawn and didn't like to talk, he was kind-hearted and not the kind of person some people used to say who was cunning.
