Chapter 31: The Cub Returns to the Mountain

Perhaps it was Jiang Nian’s prayers that made God let them off, and the weather was clear the next day, which relieved the old farmers’ tension a little.

The village chief's family was in a state of mixed emotions. The harvest was only five or six days away. With the beautiful weather, being able to preserve half the grain and pay taxes was a lifesaver. But their family had already spent all their money to buy grain.

We can only think positively, they don’t have to worry about going hungry anymore.

Yan Gu's family also had some concerns. Their family wasn't as frantic as the village chief's family; they only bought a few bags of grain, not enough to cause any serious damage.

She was wondering why she had trusted Jiang Yue so much in the first place. She just followed her lead, even though she was just a teenage girl.

Every family has its own joys and sorrows.

Jiang Yue made two raincoats out of oilcloth as spare parts. They did not affect her movements and were much better than the heavy straw raincoat.

The two then went into the mountains again.

She had seasoned the rabbits and pheasants she had hunted but couldn't keep alive and hung them under the eaves to dry. She was going to make some more bacon, so she planned to stay in the mountains for two days and one night.

The dried herbs she had prepared earlier were lying in a corner, and she didn't know when she would need them. Anyway, the more the better.

She and the eldest cub cooperated more and more tacitly. One of them was digging herbs and traps, while the other wolf went hunting.

In the afternoon, when it was getting dark, she stopped and quickly found a cave to hide in.

There were some dead animals in the cave, all dried up and looking a bit disgusting. She wore a mask, half-closed her eyes, swept them clean with branches, and then made a fire in the cave.

Even in summer, the nights in the mountains are still quite cool.

Jiang Yue sharpened two branches, put the fish on one and the rabbit on the other, and roasted them by the fire.

After a while, the skin and meat turned brown, the oil sizzled and dripped down along the texture of the meat. Sprinkled with barbecue seasoning, the aroma filled the entire valley.

She was worried that Jiang Nian wouldn't be used to chili peppers, so she only added a little bit.

"Try it."

He lowered his head, took a bite of the rabbit, chewed it, and swallowed it. After a while, he stuck out his red tongue.

"Are you feeling spicy?"

He nodded.

Jiang Yue smiled. It seemed that the eldest child would lose a lot of joy from eating delicious food.

Luckily, she only spread half of it, so we each ate one side. A bite of meat and a bite of steamed bun, it felt a bit like camping in the wild, and it tasted really good!

Jiang Yue brought up the mattress from the thatched cottage at the foot of the mountain and used it as a cushion to sleep on. She had already decided that she would never take this mattress with her into the new house; it was so dirty that she even despised it.

Jiang Nian was still sleeping in his wolf form. Fortunately, the warmth from his body dispelled the chill. Jiang Yue huddled in his arms, sleeping comfortably.

Jiang Nian's wolf body is getting bigger and bigger, and now it can wrap her tightly.

There was no mirror here, so she had no idea what her body looked like.

Looking at my wrists and ankles, it seems that I am a little fatter than when I first put them on. The clothes are also a little shorter, but not very obvious. It seems that I have grown taller.

It's only been a month, but the effect is so quick. Xiao Jiangyue has great potential.

She happily buried her face in Jiang Nian's chest and fell asleep.

Just as I was falling asleep, I heard a few long wolf howls in the valley.

She was awakened. At this time, Jiang Nian also raised his head and called out, but it was unclear whether it was a response or what it meant.

The wolf howl in her ears was clearer, more powerful, and more touching to her heart.

It's said that when wolves hear other wolves howl, they can't help but howl back, a social behavior. It's said that wolves are social animals. It's said that wolves are belligerent and wild and difficult to tame...

Jiang Nian just howled, licked her face, and lay down again.

Jiang Yue also closed her eyes, but sleepiness had long since left her. She had many things to think about, which kept her awake all night.

When it was dawn in the morning, she got up, brushed her teeth and washed her face, and found that she was still very energetic.

She went back to the traps she had dug earlier and found quite a few. Mostly rabbits and pheasants, but also some animals she couldn't identify. She didn't dare touch them and only took what she wanted.

When Jiang Nian was about to continue hunting, Jiang Yue stopped him.

"Big boy, don't go."

Jiang Nian tilted his head and looked at her, confused.

She stroked his soft yet hard neck. "I forced you to eat cooked food and get used to the human way of life because I wanted to live with you. But now I feel like I've gone too far and shouldn't have tortured you."

"Big cub, you are the king of the forest. You were born to be in nature. I know that compared to the outside world, you actually prefer living in the mountains."

Every time someone from outside approached, Jiang Nian wanted to show his fangs.

She forced him to change because she wanted him to survive the natural disaster.

But she didn't know whether this was right or wrong. Every species had its own way of life, and stifling nature was a terrible thing.

"I'm setting you free. You won't have to protect me or hunt for me anymore. You can go and live freely with your companions."

The wind rustled the leaves.

Jiang Yue's eyes were red and the corners of her eyes were hot, but she held back her tears.

She gathered her things and headed down the mountain.

This time, Jiang Nian was not called.

She resisted the urge to look back, fearing that she would be soft-hearted and reluctant to let go.

Jiang Nian had always carried her down the mountain before, but this time, she was alone. With her head lowered, she walked one step at a time for more than two hours, from the deep mountains to the front mountain.

She finally looked back.

Jiang Nian followed behind her all the time, not daring to fall behind or move forward.

His eyes were still as clear and bright as when we first met.

Jiang Yue raised her arm, waved gently, and said softly, "Goodbye, Jiang Nian."

Then he went down the mountain without looking back.

This time, Jiang Nian did not catch up.
