Chapter 140 Staying in a Village

Jiang Yue was startled, stopped moving forward, and clenched the knife in his hand.

What's living in those creepy eyes?

The eyes moved up and down and left to right, but seemed to find nothing.

Are you blind?

The thing inside "watched" quietly for a while, then stretched out its ears to listen.

Jiang Yue breathed a sigh of relief. It was a human ear. There must be a survivor inside, not a monster.

But she had no intention of disturbing the villagers, let alone causing any trouble. She just wanted to find an empty house to stay in until daybreak.

So she stood still and waited for the other person to close the door and go into the house. Then she turned around and went out, gently closing the gate behind her.

She didn't notice that the door to the inner room was gently opened again, and a vague figure appeared quietly, and the ears moved slightly.

Jiang Yue put the knife behind her and walked towards the village.

Since there are villagers in this village, she should stay away from them a little and not scare them. It would be like a murderer on a rainy night, otherwise it would cause misunderstandings and it would be difficult to resolve.

The pain in her ankle was getting worse. She hadn't bandaged her forehead to allow for air to flow, and now, after a day of rain, the scab had turned white and was showing signs of becoming inflamed.

She combed her scattered hair back, revealing her smooth forehead so as not to block the view.

The second and third houses had already collapsed in half. She walked to the fourth house, which was a stone house and looked quite sturdy.

Unable to open the gate, she climbed up the one-meter-high wall.

"Bang--"

There was a dull thud.

Then footsteps were heard in the room.

Tsk, Jiang Yue frowned. There are so many survivors in this village?

She decided to speak first to avoid being mistaken for a thief and beaten. "Excuse me, is anyone inside? I'd like to stay overnight."

She folded one hand behind her back and secretly took out two multi-grain cakes.

The people in the room paused when they heard her voice. Two voices were whispering to each other, as if discussing something. After a while, the door opened and a middle-aged woman with a kind face came out.

There was continuous lightning outside, and the dim light shone on her face, which looked a little better than the others.

Her expression was tense, and she looked behind Jiang Yue warily. After confirming that she was the only woman, she breathed a sigh of relief, "Young lady, are you alone?"

Jiang Yue nodded. "My husband went ahead to explore the way, and I waited behind. Unfortunately, it started to rain heavily, so I thought of staying in the village for the night and leaving tomorrow."

She added, "I thought no one lived in the village, so I just climbed over the wall. I am sorry for the offense, sister-in-law, please forgive me."

The woman was surprised when she saw the multi-grain pancake she handed over, and hurriedly accepted it. She first made sure that no one was following her, and then welcomed her into the house.

"Come into the house, young lady."

Jiang Yue wore a straw raincoat and a few long-sleeved shirts underneath her linen coat, which concealed her slender figure. She wore only a mask, revealing a pair of bright eyes.

The woman had no candles at home, and since the heavy rain was expected to continue for many days, she was reluctant to use firewood. She led Jiang Yue into a small room in the dark and said, "Young lady, please stay here."

After saying this, she turned and left.

Jiang Yue didn't care, as long as she could shelter from the rain.

She stood behind the door, listening to several footsteps outside. They sounded strong and powerful, the footsteps of middle-aged men. The refugees along the way all walked lightly, and few of them walked so firmly.

But this room is far away and I can't hear what they are saying.

She lowered her eyes and stood quietly for a quarter of an hour, but no one came over.

Lightning and thunder roared outside, illuminating the room. She checked the room from top to bottom and found it was completely empty, with only a small bed.

She entered the space, changed her wet clothes, and drank two packets of cold medicine.

Then I was so tired that I fell asleep.

The wind was howling and the rain was getting heavier outside, hitting the tiles with a sound like drums.

In the next room, several people were discussing something.

The woman closed the door tightly and whispered, "It was a young lady. She said her husband went to explore the way ahead and unfortunately encountered heavy rain, so she came here alone to find shelter from the rain..."

"Impossible! Would her husband leave a weak woman behind and go explore the way alone? This is obviously a lie."

Before she could finish, a man sitting on the edge of the bed replied, "Besides, who would go out exploring the route and not come back at night? If he didn't trick her into leaving her behind, then he would have already lost his life. Is exploring the route so easy?"

People like them don't even dare to explore the way alone.

Another short man's eyes rolled around, a lewd smile on his face, and he asked the eldest sister-in-law, "Is the young lady beautiful?"

She looked hesitant, unsure. "She was wearing a straw raincoat and a veil over her face, so I couldn't see clearly. But the eyes that were revealed were very beautiful, and judging by her voice, she seemed to be under twenty."

Such a young lady is just right for him! He licked his lips and said, "Why not, let her live and let her be my wife!"

He hadn't done that for a long time and was very craving it.

Suddenly, he was slapped on the back of his head by another tall, thin man with a scar on his face. "Are you the only one who wants a wife? I want one too!"

He touched his head, muttered, and didn't dare to say anything.

The eldest brother sitting on the bed rolled his eyes. These two were really useless. "Alright! Then you two can sleep for a day each and take turns."

"Hey, that's a good idea!"

Neither of them had any objections.

The eldest brother confirmed with the woman again, "Does she have any food?"

The woman shook her head. "I don't know. It looks like she didn't bring anything. But the bread she gave me was very soft and much tastier than the bread made in the village."

A few people licked their lips and shared the two pancakes. They were indeed delicious, sweet and not choking.

The eldest brother made the decision, "She's so generous with the bread, she must have other food. If she doesn't have it on her, she must have hidden it. If we keep pestering her, she'll eventually tell us."

"Besides, didn't she say her husband went out to explore the way? Let's see if her husband will come tomorrow. If he really comes..."

His eyes gleamed, "Then let's catch the turtle in the jar, two against a pair!"

How can they let the ducks fly away on their territory?

A few people sneered and replied, "Yes!"

Jiang Yue slept in the house until morning. The light from outside shone through the window paper, illuminating the house and making her vision clear.

She was stunned. It was rare for her to sleep for so long in a strange place.

The slightest movement made her whole body tingle. After being in the rain for so long, she still had a fever.

She felt dizzy, her nose was blocked, and she was shaking all the time. She had no choice but to hug the quilt tightly, and her nose and mouth were full of hot air.

At this time, there was a knock on the door.

A woman's silhouette appeared through the window paper. She called out, "Young lady, are you awake?"
