Chapter 24: Hiring someone to build a wall

When the two returned to the village, it was already dark.

Jiang Yue was afraid that the village chief's family would worry, so she went to their house first to get the rabbit back.

Sure enough, the village chief and his family were still waiting in the yard, with adults and children all looking at them.

Jiang Yue felt a little embarrassed and was not used to owing favors to others.

They went out for a day empty-handed, and when they came back they actually bought a mule cart. The mule looked stronger than their own, and the cart looked new.

Everyone was stunned, what a talent!

Because it was late and he was worried that it would be difficult for them to walk, the village chief didn't say anything else, and his wife even lit a candle for them.

The rabbits and pheasants were clearly adapting well and were frolicking about. Jiang Yue grabbed two little rabbits, a male and a female, from the cage and stuffed them into the arms of Pingya and Jiang Shan's four-year-old son, Jiang Hu, one each.

"I'll give you two little rabbits. Just feed them some grass every day. After a few months, they'll give birth to little rabbits. They can have 6-8 babies per litter, and you can have several litters a year. If you take good care of them, you'll be able to eat rabbit meat every now and then."

Pingya was very happy. She had been taking care of the rabbit all day and she loved touching these furry little animals the most.

Jiang Hu's eyes lit up. He didn't like touching rabbits, but he loved eating meat! He was young and only thought meat was eaten during Chinese New Year. He couldn't help but slurp, "Is rabbit meat delicious?"

"It's delicious, your mother is a good cook."

Jiang Hu's mother, Mrs. Li, was indeed a good cook. She was about to refuse when Jiang Yue and Jiang Nian got in the car and were about to go home. There was no point in delaying, so she didn't say anything.

Besides, this is a gift for the public, and my parents-in-law are watching. They didn't refuse, so they accepted it.

After dark, no one was walking around in the village, so the two of them returned home smoothly, letting the mule have a buffet dinner in the yard and also removing weeds.

As soon as she walked into the house, Jiang Yue felt something was wrong.

Jiang Nian was even more restless, pacing back and forth and growling softly. The scent of a stranger disturbed his nest.

She checked both rooms and found that things were in a mess, but nothing valuable was missing.

She touched Jiang Nian's neck and comforted him.

The next morning, Jiang Yue came to ask the village chief for help again.

She agreed not to owe anyone a favor, but she felt helpless and kept committing the same mistake again and again.

This time, I directly found the traditional brown sugar from the space and selected two large pieces. The color was very pure. The village head's wife thought it was too expensive and could not be accepted.

Jiang Yue said seriously, "If you don't accept it, I won't dare to bother you again in the future."

The village chief's wife looked at her husband, and when she saw him nod, she carefully put it away.

The brown sugar in town was often mixed with other impurities, its color wasn't as pure as this, and the smell was clearly good; it was expensive. She had to hide it well and wait until she needed it to make syrup to nourish her daughter and daughter-in-law.

Jiang Yue said, "We often go hunting in the mountains. It's quite remote there, so we wanted to find someone to build a wall around the house."

The village chief expressed his understanding, saying that there were no neighbors in front, behind, or on either side of the area, and the fence was not built. Not to mention bad people, it would be very dangerous even if wild animals rushed down the mountain.

"So do you want to use clay or buy stone?"

It would take four or five days to dry the mud and then build the structure, and she couldn't wait.

“Just buy the stone.”

There was a shop selling ready-made stones in the next village, and the village chief took them there to take a look. According to the three-meter height Jiang Yue mentioned, it would cost 5 taels of silver.

This circle required a lot of stone. The village chief hesitated, thinking that it was a waste to build it so high. The couple had no land or food, so making money was not easy. But the next second, she pulled out five taels of silver from her pocket without blinking.

The village chief shut up and glanced at the tall and silent boy. Is hunting really so profitable?

The village chief helped recruit helpers from around the village, looking for hardworking individuals. No food provided, just 20 coins a day to work in the village—a fantastic offer! Ten people were quickly hired.

The workers were not lazy at all and started working from the morning till dawn. In just one day, they had built a high wall and installed a sturdy gate.

Jiang Yue felt relieved and lay on the wolf boy's back. This time, she didn't have to worry about anyone peeping at her even when she was taking a bath in the yard.

She was once again thankful that her family had bought a mule cart. It was much more convenient for her to go wherever she wanted, and she no longer had to rely on her eldest son to be her human slave.

She always pays attention to weather changes. It seems that the wind has started to pick up in the past two days, and she can feel the moisture in the wind.

She pulled the mule cart out, and Jiang Nian followed, "Let's go to town to buy steamers and clothes."

When passing by some houses in the village, some people actually waved to stop the car and wanted to take a ride to the town.

She replied expressionlessly, "You can go find Brother Jiangshan."

Those people were dumbfounded.

She wasn't a bus that would stop when you waved. Besides, you had to pay for the bus, and these people were actually trying to get away with it for free? Aren't they just trying to take advantage? They thought two young people wouldn't be able to accept money.

Sorry, I made the wrong decision. She just had the nerve to refuse.

Jiang Yue knew that they had been getting a lot of attention recently, buying mule carts and building high walls, so there must be some rumors. But why should she care about these people? They weren't important people.

When she got to town, she finally remembered to buy clothes first.

Jiang Yue was now well-off, so she spent thousands of copper coins to buy two sets of clothes for the two people, from head to toe. Of course, they were all made of coarse cloth.

She patted the eldest child's head and said, "Once we finish stocking up, I'll make you clothes myself out of cotton, okay?"

The eldest cub can nod now and is very well behaved.

Jiang Yue went to the grocery store and bought two of the largest steamers, five large bathtubs, five large bamboo baskets, dozens of candles and oil lamps, and took away all the stock in the small store. The shopkeeper smiled from ear to ear and even gave her a few of the most ordinary clay basins.

These wooden products are handmade in every household in the countryside, so they are very cheap, except for the candles and oil lamps which are more expensive. The total cost was 1 liang 5 qian.

In fact, she still has more than a dozen small flashlights and hundreds of batteries in her space, but these things are non-renewable, and she always feels that they are not enough.

Before leaving, she paid a deposit of 100 coins and ordered two five-layer wooden racks, one meter wide and three meters long, from the shopkeeper, which could be made of ordinary wooden boards.

The wind began to pick up, and the two hurried back home.
