Lan Yamei didn't want to play the saint, so she didn't say anything. Under Qiu Xiangui's watchful eye, the two quickly ate their fill before getting back to the main topic.
"Dad, we have something very important to tell Kongkong this time we're back. Is he here?" Qiu Zeyu said, then took another sip of tea to cleanse his palate.
"Yes, yes! What's the matter that's so urgent?" Kongkong, always eager to cause trouble, was genuinely unsure of what to do. He thought to himself, "No wonder Lao Guan's been carving wood in his room lately; has he gotten into trouble again?"
"Nothing serious. Has he gone out in the last two days?" Qiu Zeyu asked.
"Hmm." Qiu Xiangui recalled seriously and said, "He hasn't left the house. Ever since he came back last time, he has become interested in carving and has been locking himself in his room to study it. He eats and sleeps in his room and has never left."
“Let’s go take a look,” Qiu Zeyu said to Lan Yamei.
"Let Miss Lan rest. She's come all this way; let her rest for a while," Qiu Xiangui said.
"Master Qiu, it's alright, I'm perfectly fine." After saying this, Lan Yamei felt something was off, as if there was another meaning behind it.
Fortunately, they didn't think much of it, so Qiu Xiangui could only nod.
The two arrived at Qiu Kongkong's residence, and before they even got close, they could hear the clanging of hammers and chisels coming from inside.
Qiu Zeyu knocked on the door and called out, "Kongkong?"
The clanging stopped, and the door creaked open. Seeing two familiar faces, he lazily asked, "What brings you here?" Then he turned and continued carving.
When Lan Yamei first saw two Qiu Zeyus who looked exactly alike, only their clothes were different, she immediately became suspicious. Wasn't he the one who was freeloading at the ghost market? His family wasn't poor, so how could his behavior be so disrespectful?
Before she could reach a conclusion, Qiu Zeyu pulled her into the house.
Sure enough, the room was filled with tree roots and wooden stakes of various shapes. Some had already been carved into their basic forms, but the workmanship was rather rough.
The ground was covered in sawdust and dust, indicating that it had been dry for quite some time.
"What do you want?" Qiu Kongkong asked without looking up, her hands still busy.
"Someone used Master's ultimate technique to kill someone," Qiu Zeyu said bluntly, staring at Qiu Kongkong.
Qiu Kongkong paused, looked up angrily, and said, "So, you suspect me?"
Qiu Zeyu didn't respond; he couldn't understand his younger brother either. Qiu Kongkong was often away from home, always appearing and disappearing mysteriously in his memory. No one in the family knew what he was busy with; they just treated him like a spoiled brat.
Qiu Kong angrily threw down his tools, gulped down a glass of wine, and said indignantly, "Don't forget, you also know Master's special skills. Besides, besides you and me, there's Wen Dechang! Why don't you go find him?"
Wen Dechang was expelled from the sect for his bad behavior, which was common knowledge in the martial arts world. The two did not regard him as their senior brother and often called him by his name when they mentioned him.
"You know perfectly well that he has been missing for many years! Where are you going to look for him and ask him?" Qiu Zeyu retorted.
"So you doubt me? What makes you think you can doubt me?" Qiu Kong jumped up and down in anger.
"Just answer me, have you left the house in the last two days? That's all." Qiu Zeyu was also getting angry.
"Are you interrogating a criminal?" Qiu Kongkong stared intently at her brother.
Seeing the tension between the two, Lan Yamei quickly clapped her hands and said, "Oh dear, your brother doesn't doubt you. We only need your affirmative answer to know what to do next. Otherwise, the couple in my shop died so unjustly, and as their boss, I can't explain it to their family."
Qiu Kongkong looked at the petite woman in front of her, then suddenly smiled and said, "Judging from your tone, you two are together?"
Lan Yamei blushed, feeling like a traitor, after all, her predecessor liked Qiu Kongkong.
Qiu Zeyu didn't care and generously affirmed, "Yes, you're together. Show some respect from now on; she'll be your sister-in-law sooner or later."
Qiu Kongkong still had a smirk on his lips, and said in a roguish tone, "You should like someone like me!"
"You used to come here often for barbecue, so I wanted to make more money, which is why I was so enthusiastic," Lan Yamei said, making up a story.
"Enthusiasm?" Qiu Kongkong repeated the word, laughing heartily, "Do I still need to pay?"
"Why should I pay you? From now on, when you come to the restaurant for barbecue, treat it like home. Your sister-in-law won't charge you. Besides, the restaurant doesn't need your money." Qiu Zeyu interjected.
"You've opened a shop! You're quite something, girl!" Qiu Kongkong said in a strange tone. Just a few months ago, this girl was pale, thin, and impoverished, barely making ends meet with her small stall. In the blink of an eye, she's opened a shop. Anyone could tell she must have taken her brother's money. This brother is great in every way, except he's completely clueless about romance; he's probably going to get a lesson from this girl.
"Alright, tell me quickly, have you gone out these past few days?" Qiu Zeyu pressed.
"I really haven't gone out. I've been at home these past few days. If you don't believe me, don't ask," Qiu Kongkong said firmly, though she felt a little sorry for her brother who had been deceived by a woman.
Qiu Zeyu didn't speak, just stared straight into his eyes. The air seemed to freeze. Suddenly, he pulled Lan Yamei and said, "Let's go, it's not him!"
"So, Wen Dechang is still alive? Who is he working for?" Lan Yamei believed Qiu Zeyu's judgment. Then the question is, why did Wen Dechang kill people?
“We haven’t heard from them all these years. The first thing they do when they come out is kill someone. We don’t even know who they’re working for. Think about it carefully, who could we possibly have offended?” Qiu Zeyu began to analyze.
"Who can we offend? There are plenty of people who are envious of our business."
The two discussed as they walked out.
"Wait! Since it's related to him, I want to go too." Qiu Kongkong said, taking off his sleeves, dusting himself off, and running a few steps to catch up.
The two exchanged a glance, realizing that more people meant more help, and agreed.
