Chapter 95 Using Snail Rice Noodles to Bribe a Foreign Doctor

The three had just entered the door and before they could close it, they heard the sound of galloping hooves. Before the horse had come to a complete stop, a guard jumped off and knocked loudly on the door of the clinic.

The door opened quickly, and the guard said urgently, "You must be Doctor Mei? The Murong family invites you. Please come with me."

The clinic has been packed with patients these past two days. Aunt Guan's large eyelids are bulging from exhaustion, and she asks wearily, "What's the emergency?"

Hearing the noise, the four people went outside to see what was happening.

The guard turned and glanced at the four of them, then whispered a few words to Granny Guan. Granny Guan's eyes widened in surprise, and she quickly said, "Okay, okay, wait for me a moment, I'll get my medicine box."

He turned back to the counter to grab his medicine box, and was about to leave with the guard when he caught sight of the four men at the barbecue restaurant entrance. He hurriedly said, "I have urgent business to attend to and don't know when I'll be back. There have been too many patients these past few days, so you guys need to help out at the clinic tomorrow. I'm afraid you, Uncle Ouyang, won't be able to handle it all." With that, he quickly mounted his horse and rode away.

The three of them knew the truth, but none of them said it aloud.

After closing the door and returning upstairs, everyone went to their own rooms. Exhausted from the day, they quickly turned off the lights and went to sleep, as there were still many things to do tomorrow.

Lan Yamei lay down but couldn't sleep; she felt uneasy.

On one hand, she felt guilty towards Er Gou and his wife. They were employees of her shop, and their murder seemed to be inextricably linked to the shop. Therefore, it was her responsibility to take care of Er Gou's family. She was thinking of bringing the elderly and children to live with them after Er Gou and his wife's funeral.

On the other hand, the revenge for Er Gou and his wife must be taken. They are willing to spend a lot of money to find Wen Dechang first, and then find the rotten apple behind them and take them down together.

But what did Wen Dechang look like? She had absolutely no idea. Just as she was frowning in worry, she suddenly remembered that Qiu Zeyu should know! Tomorrow, she would find an artist to paint a thousand copies and post them all over the city, offering a large reward to get him out.

As they continued with their plan, Lan Yamei heard a soft knock on the door and someone say, "It's me, Zhao Zhicheng."

It's already this late, and Qiu Zeyu is here too. It's easy for this kid to cause misunderstandings if he knocks on the door in the middle of the night. The doorman said with some difficulty, "It's so late, go to sleep. We can talk about it tomorrow."

“They’ve all gone out. That child is exhausted today and won’t wake up anytime soon. I need to talk to you, it’s urgent,” Zhao Zhicheng whispered at the door.

Frowning, she wondered what they meant by leaving. Lan Yamei opened the door. "Who did you say went out?"

Zhao Zhicheng slipped in, sat down on the stool, and said, "Didn't you hear the roof tiles creaking? Who else could it be? If you don't believe me, go knock on their door. There's definitely no one in their house."

Lan Ya Mei didn't believe it, and after some hesitation, she knocked on each door one by one. Sure enough, no one answered. She pushed open the door and found the bed empty. Neither of the brothers were in their respective rooms; she didn't know where they had gone.

Having trained in martial arts himself, he truly hadn't heard a thing. While feeling ashamed of himself, he said to Zhao Zhicheng with admiration, "Your hearing is amazing! I didn't hear a single sound."

"You seem preoccupied, lost in thought," Zhao Zhicheng said, noticing his observation. He then changed the subject, saying, "Well, I was thinking of getting you something to eat; I'm hungry."

"You knocked on the door in the middle of the night just for this?" Lan Ya Mei stared wide-eyed, unable to believe that a grown man could be so greedy. Although she had errands to run today, the shop had plenty of food and was temporarily closed; she could just come downstairs and eat. This guy wouldn't have been so oblivious to the fact that he was looking for food all day, would he?!

"What else could it be for?" After saying this, Zhao Zhicheng chuckled. "You don't actually think I have feelings for you, do you?"

"Tch, tch, tch! Stop talking nonsense, what do you want to eat today?" Lan Ya Mei wasn't stingy; it was free anyway. She immediately asked what he wanted to eat, changing the subject.

"It's been a long time since I've had snail rice noodles. How about we have some tonight? I'll have two packs and two sandwiches," Zhao Zhicheng said with a chuckle.

“No problem, just mentioning it makes my mouth water.” With that, he took out three packets of snail rice noodles and three sandwiches, and the two went downstairs to cook.

While waiting for their snail rice noodles, the two ate sandwiches and chatted.

"Tell me, if you had the chance, would you like to go back?" Zhao Zhicheng said, his cheeks puffed out.

"Hmm, I don't know. I used to live alone and it was quite lonely. Now I have friends here, people who really care about me. I don't know how to choose." Lan Yamei ate while tending to the pot, adding fuel to the fire every now and then.

"I've made up my mind. If I could really go back, I would want to go back," Zhao Zhicheng said with a chuckle.

As Lan Yamei put the items that didn't belong to this era back into her space, she said, "Okay, I'll take a few antiques back with me. By the way, I don't think many people have seen your true face. Now that the soul of the Void Glory Daoist is also suppressed, this body can be said to belong entirely to you. You can be your true self here."

"It's strange, but he used to appear so frequently, always controlling me to do things I didn't even know I was doing. Since I came here with you guys, his power seems to be getting weaker and weaker. I feel like I can completely control myself now." Zhao Zhicheng's condition has been getting better and better lately, and he's gradually becoming more lively.

"It might be a magnetic field issue, which is a good thing." Lan Yamei said as she packed the two of them into bowls and carried them upstairs one by one.

On the third floor, the two chatted while slurping noodles, enjoying their meal immensely.

"The clinic is incredibly busy. Do you want to continue shining brightly and saving lives?" Lan Yamei asked tentatively.

"Of course! It's my old specialty, and besides, combining Chinese and Western medicine makes the treatment even more effective. Back then, traditional Chinese medicine had declined, and many of the classic prescriptions were incomplete. It's a good opportunity to learn from Dr. Mei." Zhao Zhicheng had been bored out of his mind these past few days, and seeing his neighbor working so hard, he was itching to join in.

“Then it’s settled. Starting tomorrow, I’ll call you Zhao Zhicheng, Dr. Zhao! A Western doctor specially invited here.” Lan Yamei said happily, after all, Zhao Zhicheng needed to have a presence in this era so he wouldn’t be lonely.

“Okay, a promise is a promise.” Zhao Zhicheng liked his new identity and turned to say, “By the way, the shop is closed today because we’ve been busy with Er Gou and his wife’s matter. How about I help you catch the murderer first?”

"We've made progress, don't worry, the murderer won't get away. But the clinic is already overcrowded, we urgently need your help." Lan Yamei wanted to ease the burden on Aunt Guan and Uncle Ouyang, as the father and son who ran the massage parlor were also exhausted lately.

I've considered inviting other doctors to join me in seeing patients, but not a single colleague has been willing to come.

Firstly, because Doctor Mei was so famous, no one wanted to be a supporting character under a woman. Even if there was no business in the shop, they would sit at the door drinking tea and basking in the sun and stubbornly hold on. Secondly, even if they were willing to come, they were afraid that patients would rather not see them and instead line up for Doctor Mei, which would be even more embarrassing.
