Pei Han was caught off guard when she met Xiao Wei's eyes and was instantly captivated.
Although this little tiger is still just a cub, the arrogance and disdain in its eyes are already beginning to show, and one look at it tells you that it will definitely not be an ordinary creature in the future.
Xiao Wei glanced lazily at the two of them, and before Pei Ji could greet her, she turned her head back and buried her head in Min Yueqing's arms again, letting out a weak groan.
Min Yueqing chuckled and said, "I guess they're really hungry this time. Amei should be almost done packing. Let's go in."
Pei Han was somewhat amused and exasperated to be so thoroughly ignored by a little tiger. He then replied to Min Yueqing, "Alright, it's getting late, we should probably get ready for dinner."
When the topic of dinner came up, Pei Han suddenly realized something.
He had been here alone before, with only a few personal servants by his side, and he ate his meals at the patrol office's kitchen. Now that his family had arrived, it was clearly inappropriate to go back to the kitchen, especially since the food there was far too meager for his wife and children.
Pei Han was thinking about finding a cook for the next day to cook for the courtyard when he heard Amei's voice.
"Madam, sir, would you please have noodles for dinner tonight? The kitchen in the courtyard seems to have been unused; there are no ingredients inside."
When Amei and Azhu went to the kitchen in the courtyard, they were both dumbfounded.
The kitchen was completely empty except for a simple stove and pots; there wasn't even a seasoning, let alone meat or vegetables. It was Ah Shu who happened to pass by and saw them standing motionless in the kitchen, and then told them that the kitchen had never been used.
Fortunately, they hadn't finished the food on the carriage. Every time they stopped in a town, they would replenish their food supplies in case of emergency.
However, after entering the mountains, they mostly ate dry rations along the way, and the prepared ingredients were not used much. Many of the vegetables were wilted or rotten, which was a great pity.
Nowadays, all that's left are vegetables that keep longer and some cured meat, but rice and flour are always plentiful, so making a bowl of hand-pulled noodles isn't difficult.
Upon hearing this, Pei Han's first reaction was to say to Min Yueqing, "The kitchen in the courtyard has indeed never been used, and many things are missing. Madam, how about we have a meal in the communal kitchen today, and I'll have someone go out and buy some utensils and ingredients tomorrow?"
Knowing the contents of the carriage, Min Yueqing replied, "It's alright. We have quite a few odds and ends on the carriage. It won't be difficult to unload them and make a meal."
Pei Han hadn't expected Min Yueqing to be so well-prepared, and seeing that Amei didn't seem troubled at all, he agreed.
Min Yueqing then said to Amei, "Xiao Wei is also hungry. Let's cook another pot of rice porridge and leave it to cool before bringing it over."
For the past few days, Amei had gotten used to preparing meals for the little tiger every day. Upon hearing Min Yueqing's words, she replied, "Don't worry, Madam. I just started cooking it on the small stove. I'll bring it over as soon as it cools down."
Min Yueqing nodded approvingly, and Amei and Azhu went into the kitchen together.
The family entered the bedroom together, and Pei Han was immediately surprised to find that the room had changed drastically; he could hardly recognize it as his own room.
All the pillows, blankets, and quilts in the room had been added or replaced, and the few pieces of furniture had been arranged in the style of the bedroom in the Jingyuan Courtyard. There was also an exquisite screen in front of the bed, which was obviously brought from the mansion.
This bedroom suddenly felt like home, unlike before when it was just a place to sleep.
Pei Han felt a little embarrassed and quickly said to Min Yueqing as if to make amends, "The room is missing a lot of furniture. I'll have someone find a carpenter tomorrow to replace it all."
Min Yueqing gave him a teasing look but didn't say anything.
Having come from the apocalypse herself, she was most familiar with any interior design style, which was definitely minimalism. Therefore, she could understand Pei Han's laziness.
However, when it came to buying things, Min Yueqing suddenly remembered something, "Are there any dairy cows or ewes in these mountains? Xiao Wei isn't getting enough nutrition from rice porridge every day. It would be great if we could find a dairy cow or ewe to provide some milk. Besides, drinking milk is good for your health, and both children can drink a little every day."
Pei Han might need to think about other things, but he was very familiar with the situation in the mountains. After all, he had been here for more than a year, and he hadn't wasted his time; understanding the situation of each village was one of his important tasks.
Pei Han replied, "A few mountain families raise cattle. Tomorrow I will send someone to inquire if there are any cows that are currently producing milk."
As they spoke, Min Yueqing had already taken a teacup and was feeding Xiao Wei nutritional fluids. Xiao Wei was lying on her lap, happily slurping the liquid. Hearing Pei Han's reply, Min Yueqing nodded to him in gratitude.
After quickly finishing a cup of nutrient solution, Xiao Wei wagged its tail contentedly, changed from lying down to lying on its side on Min Yueqing's lap, moved its limbs softly a few times as if looking for a comfortable lying position, and soon closed its eyes and began to sleep.
Min Yueqing gently stroked the back of Xiao Wei's head; it was soft and smooth, and felt quite nice.
Min Yueqing cherishes the time she can hold the little tiger cub now. In a few months, she will only be able to dream about holding Xiao Wei so easily again.
Seeing that Xiao Wei had closed its eyes and was sleeping, Pei Ji couldn't help but feel eager to try it out. He reached out from Pei Han's arms and wanted to touch it.
When Min Yueqing saw the little one reaching out towards her and staring intently at Xiao Wei, she naturally understood that the little one was itching to play with her. She gently said to the little one, "Be gentle, don't use too much force, or Xiao Wei will feel uncomfortable."
Then Min Yueqing took the little boy's hand and placed it on the back of Xiao Wei's head, stroking it back and forth a couple of times. Sure enough, Xiao Wei was not awakened.
Pei Ji whispered excitedly, "Mother, its fur is so smooth and soft, it feels so nice to touch!"
Min Yueqing thought to herself: That's for sure. When it grows up and becomes several times its current size, it will feel even more comfortable to touch.
Perhaps sensing a scent and texture different from Min Yueqing's, Xiao Wei suddenly shook his head.
Pei Ji was startled, thinking that he was going to wake Xiao Wei up, so he immediately stopped and quietly said to Min Yueqing, "Mother, that's enough, I won't touch him anymore."
Pei Ji had his fill of petting the tiger, and reluctantly withdrew his hand, then began to enthusiastically share with Pei Han the feel of the back of Wei's head.
Pei Han listened attentively to her son's childish words, occasionally adding tidbits of knowledge about animals or related poems. Pei Ji found it interesting and chatted even more happily.
Min Yueqing listened with great interest, and some of the things Pei Han said also attracted her, a furry enthusiast.
Just as the father and son were having a warm and cozy chat inside, Amei came to invite them to dinner.
Min Yueqing first gently placed the little tiger in a corner of the room, and then walked towards the dining room with Pei Han, who was waiting beside her.
