Pei Han was very perceptive; upon hearing this, he almost understood the whole story. He looked at his son with great interest and asked, "Then why would Mother suddenly say that?"
Pei Ji answered honestly, "Because I asked my mother if the wine was good."
Min Yueqing took a sip of mutton soup with a contented smile as she watched the father and son exchange questions and answers.
A hint of a smile flashed across Pei Han's eyes as he continued, "Why are you suddenly curious about the taste of the wine?"
Upon hearing this question, Pei Ji's face flushed slightly, and she replied softly, "Because I've never drunk it before."
Pei Han couldn't help but raise his hand to cover half of his face and coughed twice to cover it up.
Pei Han was a little embarrassed to tease his son, who was too honest. He said with a slightly serious tone, "Children shouldn't drink alcohol, otherwise it will affect their growth."
Pei Ji was somewhat disappointed and gave a muffled "Oh".
Min Yueqing couldn't bear to see the little one so disappointed, so she said, "Although you can't drink it, you can try a little bit. Would you like to try?"
Pei Ji's eyes immediately brightened, and he hurriedly replied, "Yes!"
Min Yueqing picked up a clean chopstick, dipped it in the wine glass, and reminded her, "You can only have this one sip. If you want to drink more, you'll have to wait until you're older, understand?"
Pei Ji was only curious about the taste of the wine, so he obediently replied, "I understand."
Min Yueqing then held the chopsticks to Pei Ji's lips. Pei Ji immediately opened his mouth and sucked on the chopsticks. They were sweet, with a slight grape flavor, but he didn't find them particularly special.
Pei Ji tilted his head and said to Min Yueqing, "It tastes about the same as the fruit juice I used to drink."
"Aren't you curious now?"
Pei Ji nodded. "Yes, now I know what wine tastes like."
Min Yueqing thought to herself: When you grow up, you'll realize that what you drank today was just one of many kinds of wine, and one with almost no alcohol content at all. You might even feel cheated!
Just then, a rich aroma of mutton and spices wafted from the side. The group turned around and saw that the first batch of mutton skewers had been grilled.
Pei Ji then noticed that Shi Tou had gotten off the table sometime earlier and was happily sitting by the stove helping A Mei and the other person roast mutton.
Shi Tou returned to the table with a plate of fragrant lamb skewers. "Master, Master, you must try this! This roasted lamb is really delicious!"
Shi Tou was flipping the lamb skewers while desperately trying not to drool. As soon as the meat was cooked, he couldn't wait to put it on a plate and serve it.
Shi Tou watched Min Yueqing and the other two with longing eyes. Only after they had all eaten did he take a meat skewer and start eating.
One bite and your mouth is bursting with oil. You can taste the rich, oily flavor of the mutton, as well as an indescribable aroma, somewhat like the spices that were just sprinkled on.
Min Yueqing took a bite and nodded; mutton, pepper, and cumin were a perfect match.
She turned to Azhu and Amei and said, "You two should grill and eat as you go. This tastes best when it's hot; it won't taste right when it's cold."
Both Amei and Min Yueqing smiled and agreed. Amei then quietly pointed to the wooden bucket behind her, and Min Yueqing nodded.
After everyone had eaten about half their fill, Min Yueqing said to Amei, "Bring out the cake."
"What cake?" Pei Han asked, puzzled, when he first heard the word.
Ah Zhu stepped forward and made room on the table. Ah Mei carefully transferred the cake out of the wooden bucket and placed it on the dining table.
Min Yueqing pointed to the cake on the table and said, "This is it. It's a dessert recipe recorded in a book. I tried making it these past few days, and it tastes pretty good."
Pei Ji and Shi Tou both nodded like chicks pecking at rice. They had eaten cake a few times, but each time they only got a small amount, so now they would reflexively salivate whenever they saw cake.
Pei Han looked at the beautiful pastries in front of him, and then at Pei Ji and Shi Tou's expressions, and knew that Min Yueqing's "not bad" was definitely a humble statement.
Min Yueqing gave Amei a look, and Amei understood and stepped forward to cut the cake into pieces, arranging them on a plate. Azhu then placed a small silver spoon next to the plate.
The first piece was naturally given to Pei Han, the protagonist of today's event, and then the others were served in turn.
Pei Han scooped a spoonful and put it in his mouth. Apart from the fruit, the rest of the food melted in his mouth, sweet and soft, and very delicious.
"Madam, what is this white thing?"
Min Yueqing smiled and kept them in suspense, "Guess?"
Pei Han scooped up another spoonful and tasted it carefully, then pondered, "It seems to taste a bit like milk."
Min Yueqing said approvingly, "You guessed right, it is made with milk."
Pei Han exclaimed in surprise, "You can make such a delicate and smooth creamy substance just from cow's milk?"
"It not only uses milk, but also adds sugar, and the method of making it is quite ingenious. Its name is cream."
Pei Han said, "Creamy, that name is indeed very fitting."
Pei Ji looked up from the cake plate and agreed, "The cream is delicious! Mother used a lot of milk to make this cream."
He remembered that the cream was scooped from a large wooden barrel filled with milk, but only the top layer could be used to make the cream.
Pei Ji scooped up the raspberries, cream, and cake all at once and stuffed them into his mouth with a "whoosh." The sweetness of the raspberries, the aroma of the cream, and the soft texture of the cake were absolutely delicious. He blinked his big eyes happily.
While eating the cake, Min Yueqing said, "Eat as much as you like. This is a birthday special; you can only eat it on your birthday."
Before Shi Tou could even swallow the cake in his mouth, he heard this breaking news. He looked at Min Yueqing in shock and asked vaguely, "Master, can't we make it tomorrow?"
Min Yueqing shook her head with a regretful expression.
Things are valued for their rarity, and if you make them every day, they'll lose their novelty when you eat them on your birthday. Besides, whipping egg whites and cream by hand is such a painstaking process, and Min Yueqing doesn't want to torture her poor workers every day.
Pei Ji immediately said to Amei, "Then I want another one!"
Ah Mei smiled and comforted him, "Young master, don't rush, eat slowly, there's still plenty left on the plate!"
Pei Ji silently decided to eat less rice and more cake today. Unfortunately, his stomach capacity was limited, and despite his best efforts, he only managed to eat two pieces.
Pei Ji rubbed his round belly and looked enviously at Shi Tou, who had already eaten two pieces of cake and was still eating meat with gusto.
Actually, Shi Tou could have eaten more, but he remembered that Amei and Azhu hadn't eaten cake yet, so he silently held back his still itching hand.
By this time, Xiao Wei had finished eating a large piece of fresh meat and drinking a bowl of milk. It licked its lips and lay down next to Min Yueqing's legs.
After everyone had finished their meal, they put down their chopsticks one after another. Min Yueqing looked at Pei Han and suggested, "How about we go for a walk?"
Pei Han stood up happily. He had eaten too much delicious food and was quite full. This suggestion was exactly what he wanted to hear.
