Chapter 5 Taking Office

"Then I'll have someone pack our luggage and carriage right now. No matter where we go, our family will always be together."

Pei Han stopped her, saying, "The southwest region is still undeveloped. The specific situation in Sanping County is unclear, and the records only mention it briefly. All we know is that the area has many mountains and forests, little farmland, and a small population. Most importantly, there is a lot of miasma there. I have been taught martial arts since I was a child and have always insisted on exercising, so my body can still handle it. But you and your son are weak, so I'm afraid you won't be able to take it."

The original owner shook his head repeatedly, "I'm not afraid. Why don't we send our son to my father and mother? With their guidance, we can rest assured."

What Pei Han didn't say was that the southwest wasn't just badly affected by miasma; some places even had poisonous miasma. Moreover, the area was known for its unique bandits, so he would never take his wife and son with him.

For now, the only option is to half-scare and half-coax.

“Madam, you should know that the reason I was demoted this time is because I offended a petty and vicious eunuch. If I send my son to my father-in-law, there is no guarantee that this vicious eunuch will not take his anger out on my father-in-law.”

Upon hearing this, the tears that the original owner had managed to hold back welled up again.

She wanted to refute but had no way to refute it, so she could only sadly cover her eyes with a handkerchief, which was soon soaked with sweat.

Pei Han embraced his wife and tried his best to comfort her: "Don't cry. As far as work is concerned, I'm going to my post alone, which means I have fewer worries and it's actually more convenient. I promise you, I will familiarize myself with the local situation as soon as possible, and I will pick you up as soon as the situation becomes clear."

The original owner finally stopped crying and choked out, "Husband, you must remember these words. My son and I are waiting for you to come and get us."

The original owner was reluctant to part with Pei Han, who looked exhausted but was still trying to speak, so she told him to rest for a while and went to pack his luggage.

Pei Han was exhausted and in pain. Seeing that his wife had finally stopped crying, he breathed a sigh of relief. As soon as he closed his eyes, he couldn't open them again.

The original owner, along with her maids and servants, packed her luggage, and in no time they had packed several large boxes of things.

Besides the necessary money, one must bring enough clothes, shoes and socks for all four seasons. Pei Han's usual writing brush, ink, paper and inkstone are also essential, as are commonly used medicines.

In addition, everything that needs to be eaten, drunk, and used along the way must be prepared, and any items that are not enough at home must be purchased immediately.

The journey is so long, what if something goes missing? There's nowhere to buy anything along the way, no villages or shops nearby.

Pei Han was still injured, so they needed to find a spacious carriage so he could lie down comfortably for a few days and recover properly.

The servant took the list and went to make the purchases without further mention.

The thought of their son-in-law having to travel injured made even Amei and Azhu curse Jia Ren in their hearts. As they packed up, they cursed him silently, wishing that if heaven had eyes, it would immediately send down a bolt of lightning to strike this wicked bastard to death.

That evening, the couple brought Pei Ji over and placed him in the middle of the bed. Pei Ji was incredibly excited, as the opportunity to sleep with his father and mother was not something he got to do every day.

The original owner and Pei Han were both lying on their sides facing their son.

Because of the injury on his back, Pei Han could only lie on his side or stomach. However, sleeping on his stomach was not good for breathing, so the original owner gave Pei Han a long soft pillow to put in front of his chest and let Pei Han lie on his side on the soft pillow.

Pei Ji rolled into Xiangxiang's mother's arms for a while, and then slowly rolled into his father's arms.

Surprisingly, despite his constant tossing and turning, his father and mother didn't say a word to him.

No matter which way he rolled, he would be gently hugged. His father even kissed him on the forehead. He was so happy!

Pei Ji returned the favor by giving Pei Han a quick kiss on the cheek, and to be fair, he even turned around and kissed the original owner of the body as well.

Pei Ji felt that today was the happiest day of all.

Pei Ji tossed and turned for a long time, finally exhausting himself and falling asleep. Even in his sleep, his lips were still slightly upturned, forming a sweet and adorable smile.

Both Pei Han and the original owner had a suspicious glistening on their faces, which was saliva that Pei Ji had just smeared on them.

The two looked at each other, both feeling a bit amused and exasperated, but neither of them could bear to wipe it clean.

Knowing that Pei Han would be leaving the next day, the original owner said softly, "Husband, go to sleep early."

Pei Han looked at his gentle wife and replied, "You should go to sleep early too; you must be tired today."

The two closed their eyes simultaneously. Pei Han patted his son, who was lying next to him, with his eyes closed. He could still smell the warm, milky scent of his child in his dreams.

After a short while, the original owner opened her eyes again, stared at Pei Han for a long time, and then fell asleep from exhaustion.

The moment of parting on the second day was a blur in the original owner's memory. Perhaps she was too reluctant to part, causing her brain to automatically shut down this part of the memory.

But compared to what happened later, this separation was not the most painful for the original owner.

After Pei Han left, the original owner continued to take care of the child every day as before. When she read books, she would read to the child or play games with the child.

When the weather was nice, she would take the children for walks in the yard and watch Pei Ji play.

Pei Ji was very obedient; he remembered very clearly what Pei Han had told him the day before he left.

Pei Han said he was going to take up a post in a rather far place and might not be able to come home for a while. He praised him as a little man and told him to take good care of his mother at home. Finally, he gave him a high five.

Pei Ji suddenly felt like a little man. He kept his promise and spent time with his mother every day.

The original owner of this body didn't like going out much to begin with, and now that Pei Han has gone away to take up his post, she's even less inclined to go out.

In any case, their family has always lived in a separate courtyard, which saves them a lot of unnecessary social interaction.
