Chapter 59 The Fate of the Liu Family

There's no time like the present, so Min Yueqing went out and called Pei Ji over, "Lele, let's go to the main courtyard."

To avoid delaying their departure tomorrow, Min Yueqing decided to act decisively and went to the main courtyard to tell them about her departure.

Pei Ji obediently accompanied Min Yueqing as she walked towards the main courtyard. On the way, she tilted her little head and asked, "Mother, are we going to Father's place soon?"

Min Yueqing replied confidently, "That's right. If nothing unexpected happens, we'll set off first thing tomorrow morning."

Pei Ji's little face immediately lit up with a smile. Her wish was about to come true, and she was so happy that she didn't know what to do. She could only hug Min Yueqing's leg and rub her soft face against Min Yueqing's body a few times, and her whole face immediately turned pink.

Seeing how happy the little one was, Min Yueqing's eyes softened.

As they were talking, they arrived at the main courtyard gate. The gatekeeper was still the same familiar little maid. As always, she didn't dare to utter a sound when she saw her. She just quietly signaled her companion across the way to run ahead and go in to announce her arrival.

Min Yueqing, with her sharp ears and keen eyes, naturally wouldn't miss the commotion, but her principle was that she wouldn't offend others unless they offended her, and she especially wouldn't bother with a maid who didn't bother her. She pretended not to see it and led Pei Ji into the main courtyard, heading towards Liu Shi's place with familiarity.

Min Yueqing's movements appeared unhurried, but her actual speed was quite impressive. After so much training, Pei Ji's walking speed had also improved considerably. The two of them entered the main room almost one after the maid who brought the news.

The people in the main courtyard were caught off guard, and Min Yueqing met Liu Shi without any preparation.

Upon seeing Liu Shi in person, Min Yueqing immediately understood why the main courtyard had been so well-behaved these past two days. If she wasn't mistaken, Liu Shi must have some mental issues, because her eyes now looked like those of a three-year-old child, full of confusion and bewilderment, and all traces of her former shrewdness were nowhere to be found.

Xi'er was feeding Liu Shi medicine when she heard the noise and thought it was the Third Miss. When she turned around and saw Min Yueqing, she was so startled that she almost dropped the medicine bowl. Xi'er swallowed hard, quickly put down the medicine bowl, and curtsied to Min Yueqing.

Now that the mistress has become like this, the first wife will eventually take over the household. Xi'er's attitude towards Min Yueqing is now much more respectful than before.

Min Yueqing shook her head secretly. This Liu was truly vicious. She found a quack doctor who couldn't kill her, so she tried to poison her into being stupid. Now she had shot herself in the foot. It really proved the saying that good deeds are rewarded and evil deeds are punished. It's not that retribution won't come, it's just that the time hasn't come yet.

Min Yueqing asked Xi'er, "Does Master know about Madam's current condition?"

Xi'er didn't dare to lie, so she answered truthfully, "I know, and I even ordered the most famous doctor in the city to come and see him."

In fact, Lord Pei was only startled when he first saw Liu's appearance, so he hurriedly sent someone to fetch the best doctor. By then, some time had passed since Liu was poisoned, and the doctor only said that it was caused by poisoning, but as for how to cure the poison, he was naturally vague.

The doctor was at a loss. Seeing that the woman was in a daze, there was no way to solve the problem. But after all, she was a noble lady, and the Earl's Mansion was not easy to deal with. He could only play it safe, recite medical texts that ordinary people could not understand, and prescribe some medicines that would neither kill her nor have much effect.

Most of the famous doctors in the capital did this. Over time, they developed a set of methods to deal with these high-ranking officials and nobles; otherwise, their lives would be in grave danger.

Pei Yun was furious and turned the main courtyard upside down, but found nothing.

The only one who knew the truth was Granny Liu, who had personally brought the poison, but when she saw Liu's appearance, she dared not utter a single word.

Granny Liu was terrified and kept her mouth tightly shut. She was an old servant of Madam Liu and had always been trusted by her. Pei Yun never expected that this matter was related to her, so she didn't interrogate her much.

After hearing the doctor's diagnosis, Lord Pei knew that no one would die, so he put the matter out of his mind. To him, it was just a matter of changing the person in charge of the mansion, and it wouldn't affect his expenses no matter who was in charge.

As for Liu, his relationship with her was just so-so to begin with, and he considered it his duty to hire a doctor.

After hearing this, Min Yueqing felt that her worldview had been refreshed again. This nominal father-in-law was truly a pure egoist, with a heart that was both broad and cold, able to let go of everything and give up easily.

Even in the apocalypse where human relationships are cold and indifferent, this type is extremely rare.

Before Min Yueqing could finish her sigh, someone rushed in from outside. Without turning her head, Min Yueqing could guess who it was. Sure enough, a familiar voice rang in her ears.

"Sister-in-law, what brings you here?" Pei Yun forced a smile that barely smacked of a smile.

Min Yueqing calmly retorted, "What, can't I come?"

Pei Yun now resembled a turkey with its bright tail feathers plucked, visibly lacking the swagger she once possessed. She reluctantly replied, "How could that be? Of course, sister-in-law can come. It's just that I haven't seen her in so long, I'm a little surprised."

Seeing Pei Yun's disheveled appearance, Min Yueqing lost interest in teasing her and went straight to the point: "I'm leaving for the southwest tomorrow. Since the master isn't here, please tell him when he returns."

Pei Yun's face immediately showed an expression of disbelief. She felt that this woman had gone mad. Instead of seizing such a great opportunity to perform well in front of her father and try to take over the management of the Earl's Mansion, she actually wanted to go to the southwest, which was thousands of miles away!

Pei Yun often had the feeling that this sister-in-law was not her type at all, and she could never figure out what this woman was thinking. She didn't even glance at the things that everyone else cared about, and she insisted on going to places that everyone knew were dangerous.

However, Min Yueqing's departure was absolutely good news for Pei Yun. She agreed without hesitation and even said a few polite words like "Have a safe trip" while holding her nose.

Seeing that the mission was complete, Min Yueqing didn't want to stay a moment longer, so she nodded and left with Pei Ji.

As soon as they stepped out of the main courtyard gate, Pei Ji grabbed Min Yueqing's hand and said in surprise, "Mother, Madam is so strange. She doesn't even seem to realize that she's drooling."

While Min Yueqing was talking to Xi'er and the others, Pei Ji was staring intently at Liu's face. He felt as if he was seeing a fake Liu. Although her appearance hadn't changed, her whole demeanor had.

Moreover, this Liu woman is too slovenly. She doesn't even drool over him, and she doesn't care about that at all. Pei Ji silently complained to himself.

Min Yueqing replied simply, "This is what is meant by 'good and evil will eventually be rewarded,' so people must never do bad things against their conscience."

Pei Ji nodded in agreement. He remembered that his father had said something similar, but his father said, "Do not refrain from doing good because it is small, nor do evil because it is small."
