Just then, Feng Ming walked in. Upon hearing Feng Ruichuan's outrageous words, his face darkened, and he retorted, word by word, "Who are you getting angry with?"
Upon hearing that familiar voice, Feng Ruichuan immediately stopped being aggressive, shrank his neck, and obediently said, "Father."
Mother Feng was both amused and exasperated. It was true that every creature has its nemesis. Her son was usually fearless, but when he saw his father, he would behave like a mouse avoiding a cat, more obedient than anyone else.
If one could do this every day, how could one have gotten injured like this?
Although Feng's mother doted on her son, she knew in her heart that Feng Ruichuan must have done something to bully men and women again, which was why he was caught and beaten. Fortunately, heaven had eyes and the beating didn't cause any serious problems, otherwise, at her age, without even a child, she would have been truly pitiful.
Feng Ming walked to the bedside, checked on his son, and saw that although his hands were clamped between wooden boards, he was conscious and had no missing limbs, so he wasn't too worried. Instead, he asked, "What happened this time?"
Feng Ruichuan's eyes flickered twice. He could be more casual when talking to his mother, and it didn't matter much if he spoke the truth. But when he answered his father, he had to think carefully.
After thinking it over, Feng Ruichuan downplayed the issue and said, "Yesterday I went on a cruise with Liu Fan and the others to discuss academic matters. After we got off the ship, I was inexplicably beaten up on the street."
"If you don't do evil, why would someone beat you up for no reason?" Feng Mingming clearly didn't believe it.
"It's really inexplicable. We don't even know the person who hit me. He shouldn't be from Tongcheng at all. I've already asked my mother to notify the yamen to arrest him. You'll find out then."
Feng Ming didn't say anything after hearing this. His wife had always taken care of their son, and he was too busy with his business to pay attention to the child. He only came to see him today because he heard that the son was seriously injured.
"Then you should take good care of your injury and not cause trouble all the time. You're already in bed and you still can't stop making a fuss," Feng Ming instructed.
Feng Ruichuan obediently agreed, and only then did Feng Ming leave.
Seeing his father leave, Feng Ruichuan visibly breathed a sigh of relief and then anxiously waited for Mingcui to return.
Just as Feng Ruichuan was about to see right through the door frame, Mingcui finally walked over quickly, though her expression seemed rather unwell.
As soon as Mingcui entered, Feng Ruichuan asked anxiously, "How is it? Did you find it?"
Mingcui replied hesitantly, "Found it."
"Where is that person? Was he taken to the yamen? Go and tell them to bring him here."
Mingcui glanced furtively at Feng's mother, seemingly hesitant. Feng Ruichuan immediately scolded, "Did you hear that? Not uttering a sound, are you deaf or mute!"
Mingcui lowered her head even further.
Seeing Mingcui's expression, Madam Feng knew something was amiss, so she instructed Mingcui, "Just tell the truth."
Mingcui then spoke up, "The person has been found, but the constables said the woman denied it, and since they have no evidence, they have to go back and ask for instructions first."
Feng Ruichuan flew into a rage, "Useless thing! Just because she says she doesn't have it doesn't mean it doesn't! Why don't we arrest her first!"
Seeing that he was about to get up again, Feng's mother hurriedly said, "Be careful, do you really want to become disabled? What's the rush? If they're useless, we can just send someone else. Why are you so anxious about such a small thing?"
"Then hurry up and send someone there. Don't take her to the yamen, just bring her to our mansion. We have plenty of places to detain her."
While readily agreeing, Madam Feng told Feng Ruichuan to lie down quickly, and instructed Mingcui: "It's late today. Tomorrow, have Fifth Brother take some men and say that the county magistrate wants to see her. Don't say anything else. Just put the woman in the carriage and bring her directly to our house. Since that woman is from out of town, she should not be familiar with Tongcheng and should not notice anything amiss."
Feng Ruichuan listened from the side and nodded repeatedly, thinking to himself that experience is indeed valuable. If he had used this trick earlier, he would have already won the heart of the beauty by now.
Feng Ruichuan completely forgot that he was currently practically crippled, with neither of his hands usable and a thin cloth wrapped around his waist. He was only thinking about bringing the beauty into the mansion and placing her in front of him.
The next day at daybreak, Min Yueqing had just finished breakfast and returned to the inn. Before she could even finish a cup of tea, she heard that four more yamen runners had arrived.
Min Yueqing thought to herself, "They've come fast enough. The last batch left yesterday afternoon, and another batch has arrived so early this morning. The inspection is going on way too quickly."
Amei and her companion had originally planned to pack their things and load them into the car for a quick departure, but upon hearing that the yamen runners had arrived again, they were both annoyed. They stopped packing and stood angrily beside Min Yueqing, wondering what kind of trouble they were up to this time.
The constables quickly went upstairs, and Min Yueqing immediately noticed that they were not the same group of people as yesterday, although they were wearing the same clothes.
The one leading the group was a skinny man with a pointed mouth and monkey-like face. He introduced himself as Lao Wu and was quite polite in his words, but he insisted that the county magistrate wanted to see her and that he wanted to personally oversee the case.
"Madam, look, the county magistrate has personally sent us to invite you. Would you please come with us?" the fifth son urged.
Seeing his repeated requests, as if he wouldn't leave until he agreed, Min Yueqing couldn't help but become curious and really wanted to see what he was up to.
"Are you sure it's the county magistrate who wants to see me? There are so many people listening here. Think it over before you speak."
At this moment, Min Yueqing and her entourage were all in the room. As soon as the yamen runners arrived, Lai Fu skillfully summoned the waiters to come over immediately. Even the inn's young waiters quietly hid outside the door to watch the excitement.
The fifth brother thought to himself, what use are there to have more people? In Tongcheng, isn't it still their county magistrate who calls the shots? The county magistrate always doted on his younger sister, and he would grant her every request. That's why so many people in the yamen were willing to do things for the Feng family, not only to please the county magistrate but also to increase their income.
Mrs. Feng wouldn't let them make a wasted trip; she would usually give them a generous reward afterward.
The fifth brother answered without hesitation, "Of course I'm sure. It's the county magistrate who wants to see you. Who would dare to joke about the county magistrate?"
Min Yueqing stood up unhurriedly. "Alright, then I'll go see your Lord Sun."
Amei became anxious, "Miss, how can you go with them alone? Why don't we go with you?"
Lai Fu and the others chimed in, "Madam, we'll all go with you."
"No need. You can leave a quarter of an hour later and go directly to the county government office," Min Yueqing said in a low voice. She then turned to Pei Ji and Shi Tou and instructed them, "Don't wander off. Stay with Lai Fu and the others. Remember that?"
Although Shi Tou wanted to go along, Min Yueqing made serious arrangements, so he obediently replied, "I'll remember."
Pei Ji refused to let go of Min Yueqing's hand, so Min Yueqing whispered in his ear, "Lele, be good. I promise you'll see me when you get to the county office later."
Pei Ji stared at Min Yueqing with his big eyes without blinking, his lips involuntarily pursing. Min Yueqing squeezed his little hand slightly and said, "Good boy."
Pei Ji finally released her hand reluctantly.
Min Yueqing walked straight to the door. Seeing that things were going so smoothly, Lao Wu was all smiles and immediately followed her, leading her downstairs to their carriage.
