The carriage slowly came to a stop halfway up the road. The coachman outside was one of Su Yi's men, whom Mu Jin had seen when she climbed over the wall of the Prince Yi's mansion.
"Your coachman looks familiar. I feel like I've seen him somewhere before, but I can't quite place it," Mu Jin said casually.
Upon hearing Mu Jin's words, Su Yi gave her a cryptic smile.
Why are you looking at me like that?
Su Yi smiled slightly and said, "I'm just curious whether your brother, General Xuanwei, also feels that Ling Yu looks familiar, just like you do."
"Ling Yu? His name is Ling Yu?" Mu Jin asked, her eyes wide.
Su Yi laughed and said, "You finally remembered?"
"So it was your men who led my brother to the valley to bring me back?"
When Mu Yan told Mu Jin that Ling Yu went hunting in the mountains and accidentally saw Mu Jin, and then accidentally ran into Mu Yan who was looking for Mu Jin, she wondered if Ling Yu was Su Yi's person.
At that time, she hated Su Yi for playing her tricks and refused to believe that Su Yi would be so kind as to inform her family and bring her back to the capital.
"Yes, your return to the capital is all thanks to me, isn't it? But when Ah Jin met me again, she not only didn't thank me, but also punched and kicked me. What a heartless woman!" Su Yi sighed, feigning grievance.
Hearing Su Yi say this, Mu Jin felt a little guilty. She whispered, "But you didn't say that you were the one who sent someone to bring my brother back to the capital."
Su Yi scoffed softly: "I don't believe that with your intelligence, you wouldn't be able to connect this to me. You're just unwilling to admit that this matter is related to me."
Mu Jin touched her nose guiltily and mumbled, "Did I?"
It was the first time Su Yi had seen Mu Jin looking so guilty, and he found it both novel and incredibly cute. Just as he was about to say a few more words, the sound of rapid hoofbeats and the sounds of pursuit and fighting rang out from below the mountain.
Su Yi and Mu Jin exchanged a glance, then lifted the carriage curtain and jumped down to look down the mountain.
Today, Li Yansong and his entourage shook off the government officials who were following them in the capital. Taking advantage of the moment when the city gates were about to close, they fled the capital with their advisor and several guards.
What he didn't expect was that less than ten miles from the capital, several flashes of cold light appeared, and several men in black leaped out from the shadows of the bushes, thrusting their swords straight at them.
The faces of the men in black were covered by black headscarves, but each of them had fierce eyes. They held sharp swords in their hands, clearly having been waiting for them for a long time.
Li Yansong's eyes were filled with panic and fear. In his panic, he shouted to the guards beside him, "Stop them for me!"
After saying that, he whipped his horse hard and fled for his life in the darkness.
Clearly, these men in black were extremely skilled in martial arts. They quickly and swiftly killed the guards left behind by Li Yansong and then chased after Li Yansong in the direction he had fled.
The sound of black-clad men's hooves drew ever closer, the thunderous roar of their horses echoing clearly on the silent mountain path. Li Yansong's heart pounded like a drum, and he tasted a faint metallic tang of blood in his throat. He knew that if these men in black caught up with him, he would surely die.
Li Yansong whipped his horse while anxiously looking around. There was nowhere to hide, and a wave of despair washed over him.
The surrounding mountains were towering and the roads were rugged and uneven, with the horse's hooves frequently getting stuck on stones. This made him even more anxious, and he was drenched in sweat. His disheveled hair made him look even more disheveled.
The men in black who were hot on their heels were agile and quick, following closely behind Li Yansong, getting closer and closer.
At the critical moment, knowing that he could not escape, Li Yansong stopped, turned around to face the man in black, and prepared to use his last strength to resist.
He pulled hard on the reins, and the horse neighed and swerved to the side, avoiding a fatal blow.
After landing, the man in black quickly adjusted his posture and launched another attack on Li Yansong.
Li Yansong felt a chill run down his spine. He brandished his longsword, attempting to fight back against the men in black. However, he was outnumbered and quickly fell from his horse. The men in black also dismounted and slowly approached Li Yansong, their eyes filled with murderous intent.
At this moment, Li Yansong's heart was pounding like thunder, the sound of his heartbeat like a death knell urging him to the underworld.
Li Yansong showed a terrified expression, and in his panic, he crawled to his knees in front of the men in black and cried bitterly.
"Young heroes, I have plenty of money. Whatever your friend offers you, I will give you ten or a hundred times over, as long as you release me!"
The man in black standing at the front burst into laughter upon hearing Li Yansong's words.
"Give me back my official position! You're facing imminent disaster, yet you still dare to act like an official? Be smart and tell us where the account book is, and maybe we'll spare your family's lives. Otherwise, when we get to Heyang, we'll send your family to the underworld to reunite with you."
Upon hearing the words of the man in black, Li Yansong repeatedly kowtowed to the men in black in front of him.
"Please, tell the magistrate that everything I did today was just to present him with a magic pill from the Nangong Divine Sect as a birthday gift. I didn't expect it to backfire. I didn't reveal anything. I just said I came to capture the escaped prisoner. The yamen won't suspect that I have any connection with the magistrate."
The men in black were too lazy to waste words with Li Yansong. They held a sword to his neck and said, "The master doesn't care about a birthday gift from a piece of trash like you. Enough talk, are you going to talk or not?"
At this moment, Li Yansong was filled with regret and despair. He recalled that he once had a heart full of patriotism, but he was blinded by money. In order to climb the ranks, he went along with the corrupt practices and, due to his inflated greed, betrayed the principles of being an official.
