Chapter 242 High Fever

The Dongyue army drew closer and closer, the sound of their hooves like thunder, shaking the ground.

Su Yi murmured, "But if they've seen the terrain, this place is like a tiger's mouth, the easiest place to be ambushed. Why didn't they stop to observe at all? This is really unusual."

The Southern Shu army laid a tight trap at the entrance of this valley to guard against the Eastern Yue army's high vigilance and the possibility that they would stop and withdraw before entering the valley.

Even so, they were not afraid. After all, if the Dongyue army was vigilant and turned to run away, the ambushes they had set up at the mouth of the valley could cause boulders to roll down from the other side of the valley. Even if they didn't kill everyone, they could turn two or three thousand people into meat patties, which would also dampen the Dongyue people's morale.

But now, seeing this group of people seemingly without any sense of vigilance, charging straight into the valley like wild bulls, Su Yi and Mu Jin both sensed something was amiss.

As the two were pondering, all 10,000 troops from Dongyue had entered the encirclement. Before Su Yi and Mu Jin could make up their minds, they suddenly heard Mu Yan shout angrily, and the sound of boulders rolling down came from both ends of the valley.

Immediately afterwards, five thousand elite soldiers from the Southern Shu rose up from the ground like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. They drew their bows and arrows and fired at the Eastern Yue troops below the valley.

The neighing of horses echoed through the valley, but strangely, only the mournful cries of horses could be heard. The Dongyue soldiers seemed oblivious to the pain, letting countless arrows pierce their bodies without uttering a single cry.

Mu Jin frowned and stood up. Were these people dead? Their whole bodies were covered in thorns, yet they didn't utter a sound. Could the people of Dongyue really endure such pain?

After Mu Jin finished speaking, she pinched the flesh on Su Yi's arm hard.

"Ouch! Let go! You woman!" Su Yi suddenly pulled his arm back and touched the spot where Mu Jin had twisted it.

"You heartless woman! You've almost scratched my hands raw. I'm the emperor now, can't you be a little gentler with me?"

"Aren't you a native of Dongyue too? I thought you Dongyue people were born without feeling pain." Mu Jin smiled slightly at Su Yi and said, "Or is it that only someone with your delicate skin can't tolerate pain?"

Su Yi rolled his eyes at Mu Jin: "That's why I felt something was off about this matter earlier!" The two looked into the valley again, where all ten thousand Dongyue soldiers who had entered the valley were now lying on the ground.

"Ah Jin!" Mu Yan looked in the direction of the two and shouted excitedly, "How could the Dongyue soldiers become so vulnerable under Su Yuntian's rule? I originally thought that at most I would kill one or two thousand people at the entrance of the valley to dampen their arrogance."

"I didn't expect all these people to come here to die." Mu Yan laughed loudly. However, he suddenly noticed that Su Yi and Mu Jin did not have the joy of victory on their faces. Instead, they had an indescribable struggle on their faces.

Mu Yan's laughter stopped abruptly. He strode towards Su Yi and Mu Jin and asked, "Is something wrong?"

Mu Jin frowned and said, "Brother, the Emperor hasn't issued a decree, how could you issue an order without my permission?"

Mu Yan scratched his head and explained, "Didn't we agree on this before we set off? Once all their people entered the valley, the boulders on both sides would fall down, trapping them inside, and then we would shoot them to death with arrows."

"But brother, don't you think things are going too smoothly?" Mu Jin's tone was full of worry.

Mu Yan touched his nose and said nonchalantly, "They've all been killed in the valley. No matter what schemes or tricks they have, it's all in vain."

"Alright!" Su Yi interrupted their conversation. He looked at Mu Yan and said, "General Mu, have a thousand men stay behind to handle the aftermath. The rest of you will return to Liangcheng with us."

Mu Yan felt that Su Yi and Mu Jin were being too cautious, but he didn't say anything. He ordered a thousand men to stay behind to handle the aftermath, and then returned to Liangcheng with Su Yi and Mu Jin.

Having not rested properly for three whole days, Mu Jin returned to Liangcheng, took a shower, and was so exhausted that she fell asleep without even drying her hair.

When she awoke at dawn the next day, only two hours had passed since she fell asleep. Perhaps because she had something on her mind, even though Su Yi had ordered that no one approach Mu Jin's tent to avoid disturbing her rest, Mu Jin woke up on her own without being called.

After washing up, Mu Jin quickly tied her hair into a ponytail and changed into the narrow-necked robe she usually wore in the army. From a distance, she looked like a dashing young man, captivating all who looked at her.

She lifted the tent flap and stepped out, only to see Mu Yan slowly walking from the distant food camp towards the council tent.

"Brother!" Mu Jin called out. Mu Yan heard her voice, looked at Mu Jin with a smile, and asked, "Why didn't you sleep a little longer?"

Mu Jin shook her head, "I don't want to sleep."

"It's good that you're awake. I just received intelligence that Su Yuntian and his army did not break camp last night, but are still stationed in Liuzhou, seemingly intending to hold back. Could it be that Dongyue has suffered two defeats in a row and is afraid?" Mu Yan joked.

Upon hearing Mu Yan's words, Mu Jin unconsciously frowned slightly: "Wasn't Su Yuntian following behind that group of people last night?"

"No! I just received a report from an informant that Su Yuntian is indeed still stranded in Liuzhou with the 100,000-strong army."

Hearing Mu Yan's words, Mu Jin frowned even more. She gazed thoughtfully into the distance and asked Mu Yan, "Have the thousand soldiers who cleaned up last night returned to camp?"

Mu Yan nodded: "They've gone back. I just arranged for them to have breakfast and gave them half a day to rest. Now they've all gone back to their tents to rest."

"Is there anything unusual about them?"

"No! I'm just a little tired after working all night, which is perfectly normal. Jin, there's no need to worry."
