"Are you sure you don't need to bring a few more people with you? Won't the two of you be a bit outnumbered?"
Lin Fuhai knew that Song Zhuiyan and Zhong Qingyi would be leaving in a few days, but he didn't know the exact date. In order to prevent anyone from secretly following them, the two did not tell anyone the specific date of their departure.
"Don't worry too much. Too many people will only get in the way. While we're away, please ask Village Chief Lin to take good care of Tantan and Axun," Song Zhuiyan earnestly asked him.
"Don't worry, Tantan and Axun are both sensible children. Many times, the villagers benefit from their kindness. Of course, if they need my help, I will do my best." Lin Fuhai nodded emphatically.
That night, Song Tantan and Ye Moxun, dressed in matching black clothes, stealthily made their way into the deep mountains, followed by Taishan, Lao Er, and Lao San, three dogs.
Well, that's right. Song Zhuiyan and Zhong Qingyi quietly left the mountain that very night. They deliberately chose to set off at night because they didn't want anyone to know their itinerary, but they never expected that no matter how much they guarded against it, they couldn't guard against a traitor within their own ranks.
The two carried torches, taking each step very carefully. As they walked, Song Zhuiyan cursed herself inwardly, blaming herself for coming up with such a terrible idea—to set off at night. Zhong Qingyi must have been out of her mind, agreeing without even a word of objection.
Tsk, that's so unprincipled.
"I'm a little sleepy, I definitely won't be able to sleep tonight." Aunt and Uncle Zhong will not stop to rest until dawn, but they will probably only rest for an hour or two before continuing their journey, and then they will be able to stop and get some sleep when it gets dark.
There's no way they can get a good night's sleep; they'll have to take turns keeping watch, otherwise they might get snatched away by wild animals and not even know how they died.
"Shh, keep your voice down, don't let your uncle hear you. Martial arts practitioners have exceptional hearing." Ye Moxun spoke in a whisper.
Upon hearing this, Song Tantan leaned close to his ear, her warm breath tickling his face as she spoke.
"Just focus on getting going, can you shut up a bit?" Ye Moxun rolled his eyes in exasperation.
“I get sleepy if I don’t talk,” Song Tantan said, tugging at his sleeve and puffing out her cheeks as they walked.
She didn't know how long they walked. Song Tantan squinted her eyes, her biological clock almost making her fall asleep. In the end, Ye Moxun practically carried her on his back, which exhausted him.
As the sky began to lighten, the two people in front finally stopped, opened the yurt, and Song Zhuiyan went inside to catch up on her sleep, while Zhong Qingyi sat outside leaning against a tree trunk with her eyes closed, pretending to doze off.
Ye Moxun patted the little bottom and whispered, "Come down, you can rest now."
Song Tantan opened her eyes with a start. Holy crap, she had actually fallen asleep and had Ye Moxun carry her on his back. She quickly looked at his expression.
She looks a little pale, but she seems to be in good spirits, so she probably isn't too tired.
"Eat something to replenish your energy. Thank you so much for earlier. You're so kind to me." Song Tantan placed a pile of food in front of him, chattering on with compliments.
"You're kind enough to have a conscience. You're going to crush me. Take a break while you have time, or I'll have to carry you again." Ye Moxun lowered his eyes and started eating. He was really hungry. He hadn't slept all night and was exhausted. At his age, he was the type to eat a lot and got hungry quickly. He had carried this little chubby guy for a long way, so it was no wonder he was hungry.
"No, no, don't worry. If we need to travel further, I'll carry you. I keep my word." The two didn't open the yurt, mainly because they were afraid of being discovered. They simply laid out straw mats and quilts on the ground and lay down to sleep.
"Ah Xun, remember to sprinkle some medicine." She was very tired, but she was also worried that insects might crawl over and bite her while she was asleep.
As soon as he finished speaking, he heard even breathing. It was amazing that he could fall asleep so quickly in this environment. Ye Moxun sprinkled medicinal powder all around and came back to look at Song Tantan, who was sleeping soundly. He tugged at the corner of his lips and said, "You're such a little piglet, you can sleep so much."
Around noon, Song Tantan suddenly opened her eyes, awakened by the blinding sunlight. "...The sun is already overhead, what time is it?"
She sat up and saw Ye Moxun sleeping soundly beside her, even more soundly than she was. Song Tantan nudged him, "Wake up! Something bad has happened! Auntie and the others have run away."
Ye Moxun opened his eyes and looked at her blankly. After a while, he realized what was happening and immediately got up and ran to a nearby spot. He parted the grass to see where Zhong Qingyi and the others were resting.
Nobody's here; they've all left.
Oh no, I overslept.
"What can we do? We definitely can't catch up unless we travel through the night." Zhong Qingyi and Song Zhuiyan were already faster than them, and they were struggling to keep up. Now that they were half a day behind, unless they worked hard to catch up without resting at night, they couldn't hope to catch up.
"I don't know which way they went. What if we get lost?" Song Tantan slumped back onto the mat, looking utterly miserable.
"With Taishan and the second and third brothers around, we won't get lost. We can follow their scent and find our way back to the same path." Ye Moxun was more worried that Zhong Qingyi and Song Zhuiyan would get lost. If they followed behind, who knows where they would end up?
It would be interesting if a journey that would normally take more than twenty days ended up taking several months because the traveler got lost and wandered in the deep mountains.
"Since we can't catch up anyway, let's eat and drink our fill before continuing our journey." After a moment of sadness, Song Tantan stopped worrying and, in a very Zen-like manner, took out a bunch of food that she had prepared at home and put in the supermarket, called out, and began to eat heartily.
"It smells delicious, eat up! We can walk slowly after we finish eating, no rush."
"You think you're here for leisure? Why are you walking so slowly? There are many wild animals in the mountains. Be careful. You can't be so carefree." Ye Moxun frowned, clearly dissatisfied with her attitude.
