Chapter 185 An Encounter

Indeed, in the eyes of those street vendors, Song Tantan's current behavior is just "ugly people making trouble." She is a young girl, and judging from her clothes, she is a young lady from a wealthy family. However, this ordinary-looking young lady does not understand what modesty and shyness are at all.

Holding the hair accessory up and down, she realized that although her black hair was eye-catching, her plain appearance made the beautiful accessory only make her look more lackluster.

But she still had to loudly ask the handsome young man next to her, "Is it pretty? Is the purple one prettier or the pink one?"

"None of them are good-looking," the boy replied, amused.

"Can't you speak properly?" Song Tan glanced at him frankly. Was she doing this on purpose?

"Boss, how much is this in total? I'll buy it all." Song Tantan suddenly waved her hand, intending to buy the entire stall.

"Two taels of silver in total, are you sure you want it all?"

The hair ornaments were cheap, costing only two taels of silver. The shopkeeper even gave her a cloth bag as a gift to make it easier to carry.

Song Tantan paid the money, threw the bag to Ye Moxun, and then went to see what good food was available. After walking for a while, she suddenly stopped.

"Ah Xun, do you think those two people wearing veils look like Zhang Qingyu and Zhang Qingling?" After arriving in Fengcheng, Zhang Qingyu's family stayed at the government office for a few days and then moved out of the government office after renting a house. They hadn't seen each other since, but they unexpectedly bumped into each other at the temple fair today.

"Do you think we should go over and say hello? I don't think so. We don't get along with them, and there's no need for us to rush over and make friends with them." Song Tantan asked himself and answered himself, staring at the other person's back for a long time.

Seemingly sensing something, Zhang Qingyu suddenly turned around and looked over, lifting her veil and staring at them for a while. She probably noticed two unfamiliar faces, but after a moment of confusion, she ignored them.

Ye Moxun didn't have a deep impression of Zhang Qingyu, and he had no intention of greeting her. If Song Tantan hadn't reminded him, he wouldn't have noticed the back of the person standing so far away.

"Look, she seems to be talking to a man. Has she found someone she likes?" Song Tantan's gossip instincts kicked in, wanting to see what the man Zhang Qingyu had her eye on looked like and what his family background was like.

"Why bother with all that? Go if you want, I'm not interested." Ye Moxun glanced at the large bag of hair accessories in his hand, feeling a headache coming on. He just wanted to find a secluded place immediately so she could throw the things into her spatial storage.

In the end, Song Tantan didn't go to watch the excitement. Since Ye Moxun went in another direction, she had no choice but to follow him. The two of them went to a small stall to eat wontons.

"Hurry up, there's some stunt work up ahead, let's go check it out."

"It's started, there are so many people, I probably won't be able to see them later."

Several groups of people ran past the wonton stall, as if something big was happening ahead. Song Tantan quickened her eating pace, reminding someone, "Hurry up and eat, then we'll go take a look."

Given her love of joining in the fun, there was no way to stop her, so Ye Moxun could only nod to indicate that he understood.

"I know you're probably thinking to yourself that I love watching the excitement, but you can't blame me for that." There were so few forms of entertainment in ancient times—no television, no computers, no cell phones—it was so boring. Besides, she wasn't the only one who loved to join in the fun.

Everyone likes to flock to crowded places. Can't you see so many people heading in the same direction? People are really optimistic. Just half a year ago, everyone was on the run, not knowing if they would even be alive tomorrow. And now, not long after, they can happily stroll the streets and watch others perform.

"Otherwise, what do you think people should do? Die with their deceased loved ones, or live in sorrow and pain forever? People always have to look forward; the living are more important." As if thinking of something, Ye Moxun's eyes dimmed, seemingly filled with sadness.

Song Tan remained silent, unsure of what to say. She knew Ye Moxun must have been thinking of his parents and two older brothers from his previous life.

She remembered that he once said he was his parents' youngest child, and his family doted on him, which made him domineering and lawless. He liked to seek thrills and often did things that challenged the limits, such as bungee jumping and racing cars.

If he hadn't recklessly gone out racing late at night, he wouldn't have died young. Now it's all too late. Alas, it's all fate.

The atmosphere here was a bit somber, but suddenly there was a burst of gongs and drums over there, making it quite lively. Song Tantan immediately pulled Ye Moxun up, "Let's go take a look, it must be a lot of fun."

Whether it's fun or not isn't the point; the main thing is to pull him out of his low mood, because he's homesick again.

So having memories of past lives isn't necessarily a good thing. If you had a terrible past life, you might be grateful for the chance to be reborn. But if you had a very happy past life and don't have the same privileges in your next life, the disappointment will be huge.

I often reminisce about the past, feeling melancholic and sentimental.

Well, actually Ye Moxun isn't that sentimental. Apart from occasionally feeling resentful, he doesn't dwell on the past and refuse to face reality.

The two ran to the place where people were watching the commotion, only to find it already surrounded by layers upon layers of people. To get in and see the excitement, they would have to squeeze through; otherwise, they couldn't see anything from outside the human wall.

"Those with money, give a reward; those without, show your support..." This familiar and down-to-earth opening line confirms that someone is indeed performing for money.

"It's a pity we can't see it. It must be quite fun." Song Tantan sighed and shook her head, looking around to see if there were any trees nearby so she could climb up and see.

However, they couldn't find a single tree and had to leave regretfully. The two went to the temple, bought incense like the other believers, prayed in the temple, donated some money for incense, and then left.

When they came out of the temple, they ran into Zhang Qingyu and her sister again. Zhang Qingyu paused when she saw them and looked over through her veil, as if she wanted to confirm something. It has to be said that Zhang Qingyu was indeed quite smart. She probably suspected that the young man and woman in front of her might be Song Tantan and Ye Moxun.

However, she didn't ask any more questions in the end. When Zhang Qingling asked her, "Why did you stop, sister? Do you know them?" she said it was nothing and then left as if nothing had happened.

Song Tantan and Ye Moxun didn't care whether Zhang Qingyu discovered their identities. The two strolled around slowly, and after wandering around for a while, they unexpectedly returned to the place where someone had been performing.

After the performance, an old man in his fifties held a plate and asked the onlookers for tips. It was very lively while watching, but after the performance, everyone dispersed and few people were willing to give money.

"Isn't this just freeloading? People work so hard to perform, and if they don't pay, they shouldn't watch!" Song Tantan said indignantly. The people were shouting and cheering loudly during the performance, and this is what they get in return?

Then look at the street performers: an old man with two girls around thirteen or fourteen years old and two boys around eight years old. All five of them have sallow complexions, which is obvious from years of not having enough to eat.

Of course, these days, few people have a rosy complexion. Life is hard for everyone. It's good enough if you can have food to eat and not starve to death. There's really not much spare money to save.

The street performers smiled as they looked at the dozens of copper coins. They had put on such a great show a few days ago, but no one had given them any money. Today's temple fair was different. These coins would keep them from going hungry for a few more days.
