This woman is quite shrewd; she knows to test them first. Does she think they have designs on her and her son?
She doesn't even consider her own situation. In this predicament, what could anyone possibly want from her?
While she was inwardly complaining, she put on a smiling face. Song Tantan said with a hint of malice, "After you come out of the city gate, there are only two paths in this desolate wilderness. If you don't take these two paths, do you mean you're going to walk back through the weeds?"
The woman's face stiffened, and after a pause, she said in a low voice, "You are right, sir. I was being rude just now. I hope you two will not hold it against me."
Song Tan waved his hand dismissively, saying, "It's alright. We're not the kind of people who are narrow-minded. We won't take this little thing to heart."
She just wanted to argue; she didn't mean anything by it.
Seeing that the two men looked calm and genuine, the woman pulled the thin boy aside and was about to kneel down, saying, "Shaohua, quickly come and thank the two young heroes for saving our lives. If it weren't for their help, my son and I would probably have lost our lives at the city gate."
The boy was an honest man. He knelt heavily on the ground with a thud, then kowtowed forcefully. When he raised his head again, there was a large, purplish-blue blister on his forehead, with blood seeping from it.
Ye Moxun and Song Tantan: "..."
Everything happened so suddenly that by the time I tried to stop them, they had already finished kowtowing.
"Aunties, please get up, there's no need for that." Song Tantan helped the two up, sighing inwardly. People in ancient times were so honest, always kneeling down to express their gratitude.
"Of course... Shaohua, what's wrong?"
The woman was about to express her gratitude a few more words, but before she could finish speaking, her son groaned, hunched over, and shrunk three inches.
The boy was about seventeen years old. Due to years of illness, he was extremely thin and his face was sickly pale. He had just been whipped several times, and now he was covered in cold sweat, looking like he was about to die at any moment.
"Shaohua, where does it hurt? Don't scare your mother. Hang in there. I'll carry you back to the village to find a barefoot man to treat your wounds. You must hold on. If you die, I won't live either."
The woman moved quickly; while crying and shouting, she had already put her son on her back and was about to leave.
"Wait a minute, auntie, your son is about to collapse. If you carry him like this all the way, he might not make it and will pass away. You should put him down." Ye Moxun stepped forward to stop her and advised her gently.
"Pah, pah, pah, stop talking such unlucky things. My son won't die. He'll definitely pull through. I'll take him back to find someone to treat his injuries. If I just leave him here in this desolate wilderness as you suggested, he'll be fine."
The woman's cries grew louder and louder as she spoke, almost heartbreaking. She had a premonition that her son wouldn't make it this time, but even if he died, she wanted to go back to the village; she couldn't die in this desolate, uninhabited countryside.
Ye Moxun was furious. He had kindly advised her, but this woman didn't know what was good for her. If it weren't for the fact that the young man's situation was similar to his own, he wouldn't have bothered to do it. He was the one who had been meddling in other people's business.
"Ah Xun, don't be angry. The aunt was just anxious to save her son, that's why she spoke without thinking. She didn't mean it." Song Tantan tugged at his sleeve and whispered a few words of comfort.
“Auntie, don’t worry. Ah Xun’s medical skills are quite good. Please put the person down and let Ah Xun take a look at him.”
Song Tantan's expression was serious, and her tone left no room for argument. If she didn't stop him, the boy would really be dead.
The woman looked bewildered upon hearing this, unsure whether to believe the other person. However, her legs were already weak, and she was so worried that she could not even take a step. She gritted her teeth and could only tremble as she put the person down.
Ye Moxun was still angry, and it wouldn't dissipate so quickly. He stood there motionless, clearly not wanting to get involved. The woman looked at him with teary eyes, but he ignored her.
"Ah Xun, take a look! If this drags on any longer, people will really die!"
Song Tantan tugged at his sleeve again, her tone pleading. This arrogant guy, he was the one who wanted to save people just now, but he held a grudge just because the aunt said something to him.
"Hmph!" Ye Moxun snorted coldly, then glanced at Song Tantan reluctantly. His eyes clearly said, "If it weren't for your sake, I wouldn't care whether this person lives or dies."
Song Tantan: "..." Wasn't it him who wanted to save people?
Ye Moxun condescended to squat down and take the boy's pulse, fed him a pill, and then took out silver needles and inserted them into various parts of the boy's body.
After about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, the boy's complexion improved, he stopped sweating and trembling, and when Ye Moxun removed the silver needles, he opened his eyes and was able to sit up with his mother's help.
Aside from the still-painful whip marks on his body, all other symptoms had temporarily disappeared. He looked at his mother with a puzzled expression, then at the young man and woman in front of him, knowing that one of them must have done something to help him recover.
"Shaohua, quickly thank this young master. He saved you. You owe him a great debt."
The woman wiped away her tears, feeling deeply regretful. How could she have been so tactless as to contradict this wise man?
After regaining her composure, she immediately thanked Song Tantan again, "Thank you as well, young lady. Thanks to you both, my son and I are penniless and have nothing to repay you with. If you don't mind, why don't you two come to my house together, and I'll treat you to a meal."
Song Tantan looked at Ye Moxun, who arrogantly glanced away, completely ignoring her. Song Tantan knew that he had tacitly agreed, so she smiled and said, "Then we'll have to trouble you, Auntie. We also need to find a place to stay for the night. Thank you very much."
"However, we still have some things to take care of. Could you please wait here for a moment, and then we will come back to the village with you after we have finished our business?"
