Song Tantan shook off her earlier gloom and craned her neck to look ahead. She saw a dozen or so houses in a valley about two hundred meters ahead, forming a small village.
"Let's go take a look." Song Tantan twisted her body a few times to indicate that she wanted to get down and walk by herself. Song Zhuiyan did not force her and put her down.
"Let's sneak over and check things out first." If there are any barbarians or anything like that, we'll leave immediately.
Song Tantan nodded, and with a quick step, she was about to walk ahead when Song Zhuiyan grabbed her and pulled her back, glaring at her. "Follow behind me."
Pouting slightly, Song Tantan felt a little wronged. She cautiously crouched down to follow, but quickly straightened up again. She was only about a meter tall, so there was really no need for her to make this unnecessary movement.
When they reached the village entrance, they found several corpses in a wasteland. They had begun to decompose and emitted a nauseating stench. Among them were two children who looked to be seven or eight years old, and six adults whose faces were no longer recognizable.
Their stomachs churned, and they forced themselves to quicken their pace toward the village, trying to suppress the urge to vomit. They searched each house one by one, but the village was deathly silent; they didn't find a single living person.
The houses inside each household were in a mess and had been vandalized, indicating that they had been robbed and killed by barbarians or bandits. The dead people outside were villagers who did not have time to escape. There were at least fifty or sixty people from the dozen or so households. The rest must have escaped.
I hope they escaped alive.
“It seems this place has been abandoned, but it’s a good place to stay temporarily,” Song Zhuiyan said.
“Then let’s go back and bring the people over. Let’s stay here for a while first.” Song Tantan agreed with her opinion. Whether it was Hu people or bandits who wiped out the village, they generally wouldn’t return after leaving.
The two immediately headed back, and the return journey was much faster than the way they had come. As they approached the place where Ye Moxun and the others were resting, they could see smoke rising in the distance and smell a... meaty aroma.
Where did those refugees get the meat?
Both Song Tantan and Song Zhuiyan felt puzzled. Song Tantan's heart pounded, and she had a bad feeling. She subconsciously reached out and grabbed her aunt's clothes.
"Don't worry, let's see first." Song Zhuiyan held her small hand, her expression serious. She and Tantan had the same guess.
The two quickened their pace and ran back to where Ye Mo had found them to rest. Seeing that they were all alright, Song Tantan breathed a sigh of relief, and Song Zhuiyan's tense expression also eased a bit.
"What happened?" Song Tantan walked up to Ye Moxun and asked.
"Look for yourselves, see what they're grilling." Ye Moxun's face was grim, his eyes revealing disgust and anger.
Song Tantan took a few steps with her short legs, wanting to go and find out what was going on, but Song Zhuiyan hugged her and covered her eyes. The latter whispered in her ear, "Don't look, those Hu people are being eaten by them."
The eight refugees who were grilling meat were all strong and robust, aged between eighteen and thirty. They were all burly men with fierce expressions, and it was clear that they had eaten a lot of meat.
Were these people in the refugee group before? Song Tantan had no recollection, and Song Zhuiyan didn't remember if these people had been there either, but neither of them made any rash moves, because the other side all had knives, not the large swords of the Hu people, but a variety of weapons.
One of them, a burly man in his thirties who seemed to be the leader, was holding a sharp machete. Three others were holding shorter, less sharp knives, and the remaining four were holding long daggers.
The real refugees huddled together and hid far away. There were dozens of refugees a moment ago, but now there are less than twenty left, and they are all women and children.
Song Tantan quickly realized that these women and children didn't not want to leave; they just couldn't.
"Another tender little kid and a young woman. We'll play with them after we've filled our stomachs, hahaha." These people didn't take Song Tantan and Song Zhuiyan seriously, even though they were carrying large knives.
“These people probably haven’t eaten for several meals, so they didn’t kill anyone when they arrived. They just roasted the Hu people. But they will definitely target the women and children next time. Are you confident that you can defeat them?” Ye Moxun walked over and said in a low voice.
Half an hour before these people arrived, the system had already warned him of danger. Unfortunately, he couldn't take his uncle with him. When he told the other refugees, no one believed him. Even the skeptical refugees ran away with their families. No one was willing to help him.
The incompetent system could only prepare him mentally for impending danger; it could do nothing else.
System: Waaah, if it hadn't been bound to the wrong host, it would also have superpowers. Let's not talk about it now.
"Tantan, there's still a lot of lime left at that abandoned lime factory on our mountain, right?" Song Zhuiyan asked her with a meaningful look.
Song Tantan immediately understood. A sudden inspiration struck her, and her eyes lit up as she said, "There are still quite a few high-proof liquors in the supermarket. Let's do this..."
After discussing it, the two sat down next to Zhong Qingyi who was lying down. The burly men were still wary of them, since they were carrying knives.
Seeing Song Tantan and the others huddled together, the burly men relaxed their guard a bit. By this time, the roasted meat was cooked, and they began to feast.
Song Tantan lowered her eyes, suppressing the urge to vomit. She handed Ye Moxun a bottle of insecticide spray and a packet of lime powder.
"Your aunt and I are afraid we won't be able to look after you later, so please be careful."
After saying that, she suddenly sprang up and rushed towards the eight big men like a small cannonball. When she was only a few meters away, she leaped up, pushed off the low tree with her short legs, and the little girl soared into the air. As she flew over the fire, several wine jars fell off her.
