Chapter Nineteen: Departure

The children didn't utter a sound. After finishing the last bit of fried rice, they lay down on the dry grass and fell asleep. They had developed a habit during their escape: when running, they would try their best to keep up with the adults' pace, and when resting, they would eat and fall asleep immediately so that they would have the strength to continue their journey.

The older children were awakened by the sounds of fighting, while the younger ones remained sound asleep until Song Tantan's sweet, childlike voice jolted them awake.

"What should I do? What should I do?" Zhu Xiu murmured, her voice trembling as she gripped the knife.

"Stand up and run as I command. Hold your knives tight. When someone tries to cut you, cut back. Don't let them get away with it." Song Tantan's childish voice was firm and resolute as she brandished her large knife with great flair.
