Song Tantan felt a little sad, but there was nothing she could do if she couldn't find the dogs. She hoped that they would come back on their own in the future, instead of being eaten by wild animals.
Of the saplings they brought back, Song Zhuiyan selected a few orange and loquat trees to plant in the backyard, and took the rest to plant in the wasteland. She also shared some with people in their yards who wanted to plant them, but there weren't enough saplings in the yard. Yesterday, she brought back two bundles, which contained about a hundred saplings, each about the thickness of her little finger and about a meter tall.
People didn't understand why Song Zhuiyan planted fruit trees in the field. They thought it was fine to plant a few trees in the yard to eat fruit, but planting grain in the field was more important. What was the use of planting fruit trees? Fruit couldn't fill a bag. Fruit was just something to quench thirst and fill your stomach when there was nothing else to eat, but in everyone's eyes, it couldn't compare to grain.
"Tantan and I can't eat that much grain, so it's okay to grow more fruit." Song Zhuiyan's explanation was very perfunctory. No matter how much she explained, people still wouldn't understand, right?
Spring passed and summer arrived, and the weather gradually became hot. One morning, when Song Zhuiyan got up to feed the pigs, she suddenly heard a dog barking outside the door. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly went to open the door.
But then she saw Weifeng and Qiaoqiao wagging their tails happily and barking a few times towards the gate, as if in response to something. When Song Zhuiyan opened the fence gate, she saw that all three wolfhounds that had been missing for more than two months had returned.
"You guys finally know to come back! Where have you been running off to? Don't you know everyone's been looking for you?" Song Zhuiyan was initially delighted, but when the three wolfhounds came over to be affectionate with her, she became angry again and gave the puppies a stern lecture.
"Auntie, what's wrong? Why are you making such a fuss so early in the morning?" Song Tantan rubbed her eyes as she came out of her room. Suddenly, her vision blurred and several dark brown furry creatures rushed over and bumped into her.
"Ouch!" Her little bottom was bruised and swollen. Song Tantan looked closely and saw that the three lost dogs had returned, drooling and trying to lick her face.
Startled, she jumped up to avoid the dog's enthusiastic spit attack. She didn't like being licked, and the spit on her face felt strangely uncomfortable.
"It's good that you're back. You can't run around like that anymore, okay?" Song Tantan said with a soft, sweet smile. She patted the dog's head a few times and then ran to wash up. The six dogs in the yard rubbed against each other happily, showing great affection.
"Should we chain them up so they don't run around aimlessly? Some of them don't even come home." Song Zhuiyan stroked her chin, considering the feasibility.
"Let's not do that. The dogs are so obedient. It's normal for them to run out into the wild occasionally. It would be so uncomfortable to lock them up at home." Song Tantan disagreed with tying up the dogs. Weifeng and Qiaoqiao were the most docile. They never went out without their owner's permission and didn't need to be tethered at all.
Their offspring are also well-behaved, but perhaps because they've been running around in the mountains since they were little, they've become a bit wilder. However, they will always come home on time. When Song Tantan blows a whistle, even if they're playing wildly outside, they'll run back when they hear the whistle.
For a while, we went out every day with all four dogs. One of them would come home before dark each day, but the other three suddenly disappeared. But now they've come back on their own.
Song Tantan thought of a description from animals and nature: Spring is here, flowers are blooming, all things are reviving, and it's mating season again.
That's right, dogs go into heat in the spring, so they wander all over the mountains and don't go home until after spring.
A month later, the three dogs gradually developed pregnant bellies, confirming Song Tantan's guess was correct. It turned out that the three missing dogs were all females and would soon be mothers.
But besides their family having a dog, are there any other dogs in the mountains?
"It's possible that it came back from mingling with wolves, so the puppies born will be true wolfhounds, full of wildness," Ye Moxun concluded with certainty.
Song Tantan wanted to refute something, but after thinking for a long time, she couldn't find a suitable reason. After all, this guess was most likely true, unless there were other dogs on the mountain, then only wolves were left.
“No matter what kind of baby it is, I will love it, and my aunt will raise it,” Song Tan said frankly.
"I'd like to raise one too, could you give me one?" Ye Moxun looked at her expectantly.
"You come here to freeload every day, how can you raise a dog?" This implies that he himself needs others to support him, so how could he possibly afford to raise a dog?
"My uncle is very good at hunting, and I can also catch small game. If you give me the puppy, I will take good care of it," Ye Moxun promised confidently.
Song Tantang refused, but he kept pestering her, asking every now and then. Song Tantang was so annoyed that she almost hit him, but in the end she didn't. She even promised to give him a puppy.
At the end of May, three dogs gave birth to puppies on the same night, one after the other, with four puppies each, for a total of twelve.
The next day, when Ye Mo came over, he learned that the puppies had been born. He quickly went to choose the puppies he wanted to raise. Newborn puppies cannot be touched; you can only look at them from the side. The mother dog is very protective, and she will bare her teeth if you get too close.
After looking around, Ye Moxun finally chose one of the largest puppies, with gray fur but snow-white fur on its neck and belly.
"This puppy looks like a husky when it stands up, but it's very smart. I like it and I want to keep it." Ye Moxun smiled gently as he looked at the puppy that was sleeping soundly on its mother's belly.
Song Tantan looked at it for a long time but still couldn't figure out what made the puppy smart, because it could sleep and was the biggest?
It was because its fur looked the cleanest and prettiest that she had reason to suspect that Ye Moxun chose it because he thought it was more attractive and had a prettier fur than the other puppies, rather than because it was smart.
“Face-obsessed!” Song Tantan slowly uttered these two words.
I don't know if they're talking about a puppy or Ye Moxun.
