Chapter Ninety-One: Soft-hearted

Zhong Qingyi wanted to refuse, but seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, she felt it wouldn't be right to embarrass her, so she picked up her chopsticks and took a piece to eat.

"How about it?"

"Mmm, it's delicious." Meeting her bright eyes, Zhong Qingyi smiled shyly.

“By the time of the New Year, the pigs I raise will have grown up. I’ll bring two of them to slaughter, share some with the villagers, and keep the offal for myself. I’ll stir-fry pig intestines and pig stomach for you, and we can also make sausages.” The litter of pigs that Song Tantan brought back to raise back then has now grown into big, fat pigs.

Song Zhuiyan generously decided to slaughter two pigs and give one to the villagers. In fact, after the two sows that Song Tantan raised gave birth, she also gave several piglets to the villagers to raise.

However, since everyone was short of food, the piglets couldn't possibly have any good feed. They could only eat pigweed every day, and later some sweet potato vines, but they probably still weren't full.

Everyone was very busy and their minds were focused on other things. Those families didn't pay much attention to raising pigs, but they kept pestering Song Zhuiyan to ask her for piglets to raise. Otherwise, Song Zhuiyan would have preferred to raise them herself, since the sweet potatoes and corn she grew could be used to feed the pigs, so she didn't lack food.

She was very angry when she saw those families raising pigs that were skin and bones. They had pestered her for piglets, but after getting them, they didn't raise them properly. But after calming down, she felt there was no reason to be angry. They wanted to eat pork, which is why they wanted to raise pigs. Unfortunately, they barely had enough food to feed themselves.

At times like these, she can't teach others how to raise pigs. If she were to teach them, she would have to wait until the land is fertile, there are enough seeds, and a harvest of more grain is available so that there is no worry about food.

So she's a very soft-hearted person; she'll even offer one of her own fat pigs to the villagers to eat.

The next day, after having breakfast at Zhong Qingyi's house, Song Tantan went back to the neighbor's house with her aunt, Zhong Qingyi, and Ye Moxun. Pushing open the fence gate, Song Tantan tentatively stepped on the yard and found that it was not very hard, but no footprints were left.

"It's fine for people to step on," she said with a cheerful laugh. "We can step on it now. Come on, let's go inside and take a look."

Then she naturally took Ye Moxun's hand and ran into the house. Song Zhuiyan and Zhong Qingyi were used to the two holding hands and didn't feel anything was wrong. They naturally followed them into the house.

The floor inside is safe to walk on now, but we can't move our things back in right away. We still need to water it for the next few days. The cement has just been laid, and while the outer layer is dry, the inner layer isn't. If the sun shines and the temperature rises, the temperature difference between the inside and outside will increase, and the inner cement won't have enough time to replenish moisture during the hardening process, which can easily cause cracks.

So we have to stay at the Zhong family's house for another two days before we can move our things back.

The moving process was full of twists and turns, and many things happened. First of all, there was the issue of food. Before, Song Zhuiyan distributed food to pay for labor, so everyone suspected that she had hidden a lot of food. Now that they knew she was going to move things to Zhong Qingyi's house, they all came to watch the excitement.

Song Zhuiyan had anticipated this, so the night before, she took the grain out of her spatial dimension and moved it to the Zhong family's house. There were 400 catties of sweet potatoes and corn, and 500 catties of rice, which Zhong Qingyi helped carry.

To be honest, Zhong Qingyi was quite surprised. She didn't expect that after so much time, Song Zhuiyan's family still had so much rice. The last time they brought the grain back from the cave was at the end of last year when it had just snowed. It had been almost a year since then.

So they helped carry at least a thousand kilograms of grain back then. Back then, Miss Song even advised him to carry fewer bags and leave some for others.

Song Zhuiyan glanced at him and calmly said, "I'm a woman with a child, life isn't easy, so I need to bring back more food. Otherwise, I won't feel secure. But I've already given away all the sweet potatoes and corn I harvested this year, so this is all I have left to eat until next autumn's harvest."

Although we can pick wild vegetables and mushrooms to fill our stomachs in the spring, eating too much of those things can upset our stomachs. Tantan is still young, and I can't bear to see her suffer too much. If you run out of rice, I can lend you some. A-Xun is weak and can't eat too poorly.

Actually, it wouldn't have mattered if she didn't explain. Zhong Qingyi was only surprised for a moment and then didn't think much of it. If it were him, he would have done the same. Nothing is more important than A-Xun. Miss Song had no choice in the matter. Only a fool wouldn't hide more food for his family to eat.

"Shh, Miss Song, keep your voice down. Don't let anyone else hear. This is your family's grain, and no one can say anything. Just leave it here. Remember to lock the door when you leave, so no one can steal it." Zhong Qingyi not only didn't think she had done anything wrong, but also reminded her to be careful.

There was something Song Zhuiyan didn't know: in Zhong Qingyi's heart, among all the people in the village, Song Zhuiyan and Song Tantan were the ones he trusted the most. He had almost died at the hands of the Hu people, and it was Song Zhuiyan and Song Tantan who saved him and A-Xun.

Ah Xun's health has improved significantly over the past year, thanks to Miss Song's frequent use of good things from her home to help him recover. Their family and the Song family are like relatives, supporting each other.

Regardless of the circumstances, he would definitely stand on Miss Song's side. He believed that if something happened to him and A-Xun, Miss Song and Tan-Tan would also be on their side.

Returning to the topic of cement, because cement is not easy to make, and not enough can be made at once, so it can only be used by one family first. The cement making method was provided by the Song family, so to make cement floors, the Song family's floors had to be built first.

Next up is the Zhong family. Although the production method was provided by the Song family, it was Ye Moxun who found people and guided everyone in making it. He deserves a lot of credit, so the cement collected the second time will be used at his family's house.

The others have to wait in line. The third house is probably Lin Fuhai's, since he's the village chief. Who will be next is not Song Zhuiyan's concern.

Although the village is now called 'Songlin Village', Song Zhuiyan and Zhong Qingyi don't care about the affairs of the original Linjia Village. They discuss and handle everything themselves, unless it concerns the entire 'Songlin Village'.

However, the Zhong family couldn't install cement floors this year because it started snowing in just a few days, and everyone was stuck at home with nothing to do.

When she had free time, Song Zhuiyan was persuaded by Song Tantan to teach the women in the village how to make chestnut cakes and chestnut pancakes.

"You brought this on yourself, but I have to clean up your mess. I'm not good at making pastries either, and they'll probably taste terrible, but you still insist on making me embarrass myself." Song Zhuiyan was very resentful; she didn't want to go out in this cold weather.

It's so cold outside, and the ground chestnut flour won't spoil easily, so just leave it for now. If all else fails, you can make pancakes with it; the method is similar to making flatbread.

"I've already made that promise, I can't go back on my word, Auntie, you have to help me save face," Song Tantan said with a grin, trying to win him back.

Yesterday, she pestered her aunt all day to learn how to make chestnut cake. At first, the taste wasn't good, but she practiced until evening before making a delicious chestnut cake. So today, she asked her aunt to teach her how.
