Chapter Seventeen: Preparing to Leave

Ye Moxun calmly compared the two's appearances and found that Song Tantan and Song Zhuiyan did indeed look about 50% alike, but Song Zhuiyan's features were more striking, a kind of heroic beauty.

Song Tantan's features are more delicate and soft, but her face is chubby, probably because she hasn't fully grown in yet. Once she does, she might look more like her aunt.

Actually, that's not the case. Song Tantan and Song Zhuiyan only look alike by about 50%. Their temperaments are very different. In her previous life, Song Tantan's features were also softer, and she looked gentle and sweet.

"After dinner, we still need to help others repair the roof. Auntie, how about I switch places on the roof and you hand over the materials from below?" Song Tantan eats very quickly, speaks very quickly, and moves very efficiently.

Unfortunately, once she speaks, all the gentleness and mildness are irrelevant to her; she's just a brash little firecracker with exceptionally high fighting skills.

"Ye Moxun, have you taken the wrong medicine? Why are you secretly looking at me, then shaking your head after just one glance? Tell me, what exactly are you thinking about me?" Song Tantan put on an expression that said, "I've seen through you."

But often she is thoughtful and observant; in short, both of these women, one big and one small, are formidable characters.

In a short moment, Ye Moxun's mind raced. He swallowed the food in his mouth and calmly said, "There were rice grains on your face just now. I was about to remind you, but they fell off by themselves, so I felt there was no need to bring it up again."

Song Tantan didn't believe his story, but she couldn't find any flaws, so she decided to let it go for the time being.

No one else dared to climb onto the roof, except for ten-year-old Azhu, who did, but he didn't know how to fix it. So in the end, Song Zhuiyan helped them fix the roof, and it took them two whole days to do so.

In the days that followed, Song Tantan followed Song Zhuiyan out to find a new place to stay. After two days of searching, they couldn't find a better place. In fact, the small village where they were staying was relatively safer.

"I've almost recovered now. I'll go out and check on things in a few days. Maybe things aren't as bad as I think." Zhong Qingyi's complexion has been rosier these past few days. He feels that it's just traveling and not hard labor, so he can go out for a stroll without any problem.

Song Zhuiyan was unfamiliar with the environment and had no clue whatsoever when she went out to investigate. She could only wander around the area. If Zhong Qingyi went out, she would definitely be able to find other villages or prefectures.

“We’re worried about you going alone, so I’ll go with you,” Song Zhuiyan said.

Zhong Qingyi instinctively wanted to say no, but seeing her firm attitude, she didn't argue further.

"The surrounding area is all wilderness, and it will definitely take a lot of time to find a town. The round trip will probably take at least ten days. It's not safe for Ah Xun and Tan Tan to be alone at home." Ah Xun has never left his side since he was a child, and he can't rest easy leaving Ah Xun alone at home.

In fact, Song Zhuiyan was also worried about leaving Song Tantan alone at home. If bad guys came into the village, she was too young to handle it. Even if she could hide in her spatial dimension, what about the others? There were so many children and several women. But if they took Ye Moxun and Song Tantan with them, the others would definitely worry and want to go with them.

The two of them were suddenly in a dilemma.

“Uncle Zhong, don’t worry, I will protect your Xun. I’m very strong,” Song Tantan patted her chest with her little hand, and then assured her aunt, “Auntie, don’t worry about me. I can protect everyone.”

Her words made Song Zhuiyan even more worried. A little baby, who still needs to drink formula from a bottle every night, protecting everyone? Does that mean she has to be the first to stand in front of danger? How many people can she actually stop?

“I think we should forget it. The situation outside is just that there are more and more refugees, many people have died from the plague, and some refugees have been infected. This place is very remote, and it will be difficult for refugees to find it. If we wander around the mountains more often, we will definitely find a place to hide.”

After much deliberation, Song Zhuiyan still felt that staying in the village was the safest option. The entire Great Jin Dynasty was in chaos, and the worst news she heard was that the dynasty would be overthrown and the people would suffer. It would take several years for the situation to recover.

They didn't want to be officials, didn't care about their future, and had no relatives to look for. There was plenty of food in the open space, so they weren't afraid of starving to death. Finding a secluded paradise to live in seclusion was the most important thing, at least for the next few years.

Zhong Qingyi wanted to go out and gather information. He wanted to find Ye Zheng, Ye Moxun's father. The Ye family was very prominent, and he felt that Ye Moxun would have a better career path if he returned to the Ye family.

“Uncle, we’re not in a hurry to go back. The world is too chaotic right now. People are struggling to survive, and the court is too busy to care for itself. What future is there to speak of? As long as we’re alive, we can always make a comeback. Our priority is to save our lives.” Ye Moxun knew what he was thinking.

However, his uncle would definitely not agree to him saying he didn't want to go back to the Ye family, so he could only use a temporary measure to appease him. "We don't know where the Ye family has fled to. We can't find them even if we search for a while, maybe even for several years or more. Your injuries haven't healed yet, so I'm afraid you can't protect me. My body is weak and can't withstand any more hardship. I'm afraid something will happen to me halfway there."

So he decided to stay put with the two young ladies from the Song family and find a safe place, instead of causing any trouble. He didn't say the unspoken implication, but silently completed the sentence in his mind.

What Zhong Qingyi cared about most was, of course, his sister's only flesh and blood, his nephew Ye Moxun. Thinking of the perilous journey, if it weren't for the Song family girl saving them this time, he would probably be long dead, and Moxun would also be in grave danger.

That's all. Nothing is more important than people. The most important thing is for Ah Xun to grow up safely.

"We'll set some traps around the village, and we'll also train everyone." Song Tantan's eyes lit up as he excitedly stood up, ready to get started.

Judging from her expression, she's probably been planning this for a long time and can't wait to put it into action.

"That's a good idea, but what kind of trap can we set?" Song Zhuiyan thought seriously.

Naturally, they would use hunting methods like digging pits. They could think of other methods later. So, several adults started digging pits around the village. The pits had to be deep, at least three meters high, to be effective.

This was exhausting. The only strong man, Zhong Qingyi, couldn't work for too long because his injuries hadn't fully healed. The other adults were all women, and their strength was limited. It took them three days to dig a large pit at the village entrance, and they were all exhausted.

"We can manage to dig slowly, but we really can't keep going if we're in a rush," Zhu Xiu said weakly, waving her hand.

They could only eat until they were half full each day, and all their energy was used up. Their stomachs were empty, and they felt weak and emaciated.

"No need to dig a pit anymore, we've thought of another way. We'll leave the trap-setting to Auntie and Uncle Zhong. We have other things to do, so you all come with me." Song Tantan excitedly carried a large knife that was almost as long as her, and her short legs strode with an air of nonchalance.

As a result, Zhu Xiu and two other women, along with a group of children, were subjected to Song Tantan's daily rigorous training, which left them half-dead. In the mornings, they would squat in a horse stance, and in the afternoons, they would compete in running.
