Chapter Thirty-Two: A Pack of Wolves

Song Zhuiyan continued to lead the way, Zhong Qingyi walked at the back, and the others were in the middle. The group of more than a dozen people ran south in a rush, with Zhuyu and Liu Mei also closely mixed in with the group.

"Village Chief, what do we do?" Lin Shan looked at Song Zhuiyan and her group leaving with a blank expression. He hadn't even finished speaking when they left like that.

"Should I drive the carriage away?" Lin Xiaobei stared at the two horses with shining eyes. It turned out that when their village fled, many families also had oxcarts and donkey carts, but they were all killed and eaten along the way.

"I think it's a good idea. The village chief's horse is a fine animal; we could never afford one in our lifetime." Lin Shan also realized that he wanted the horse, or at least he could kill it and eat it.

"What time is it for you to still be eyeing someone else's horse? If you could take it with you, would they have abandoned it?" Village Chief Lin Fuhai scolded irritably. "Hurry up and follow them."

"Why did the village chief go with them?" Lin Shan asked, puzzled.

"Why ask so many questions? If you don't want to follow, you can go the other way yourself." Lin Fuhai snapped angrily. He didn't know where to go, so he was following them.

Those people were with so many children. The man and woman, although one was carrying a sword and the other a knife, had very honest eyes and didn't seem like bad people. Following them, there was no need to worry about them harming the villagers.

And that little girl, she was carrying a light in her hand, I don’t know what it was, but it looked very impressive. Lin Fuhai subconsciously felt that following them was definitely the right thing to do.

Led by Lin Fuhai, the people of Linjia Village followed closely behind Song Tantan and his group. After walking for about an hour, Zhong Qingyi shouted in a low voice, "Everyone be careful, there's an ambush."

Of all the people, he was the most skilled in martial arts and had the most combat experience. He keenly noticed that there were many people lying in ambush in the bushes ahead. Although they might not be there to deal with them, if they rushed over rashly, things would definitely go wrong.

Although he lowered his voice, those people still heard him. In fact, they were discovered when they entered the forest, especially since Song Tantan was shining such a bright light.

The men lying in ambush here were Duke's subordinates. They were divided into three groups and planned to attack Fengcheng before dawn while Duan Wang's men were off guard. However, Xifeng had a special terrain, which was located at the junction of the north and south and in the west. It was surrounded by mountains and the terrain was very complicated. So their group got lost in the mountains.

They had been circling around for most of the night without finding their way out. The soldiers were exhausted and decided to rest for a few minutes before looking for a way out. Just as they were about to start a fire to warm themselves, they noticed an unusual light flickering in the distance.

Although Song Tantan had switched to a smaller flashlight, it still gave them away. The soldiers of the Du family army were planning to wipe them out as soon as they got close, leaving only a few survivors to take them out.

Unexpectedly, they discovered each other, and the other side quickly discovered them as well. It seems that these are not ordinary refugees, but also experts mixed in. Could it be that some powerful family has accidentally wandered into these mountains?

The Duke of Zhenguo and the Du family army were not friendly to refugees, and even somewhat disgusted with them. They thought refugees were like parasites who only dragged down the court and were of no use. If they were lucky, they would be beaten; if they were unlucky, they would be killed.

The leader of the group was a deputy general, who sneered coldly, "Even if they noticed, so what? They still can't escape death." He had been circling this mountain for most of the night, and he was fuming with nowhere to vent his anger. These people running into him was simply courting death.

"Kill them all! Leave two alive to ask for directions. If they don't know anything, leave them all alive." The lieutenant, holding a long spear, waved his hand, and his men charged towards the group of refugees with knives in front of them.

The two groups were about 100 meters apart. As soon as Zhong Qingyi realized something was wrong, she ordered everyone to turn around and run in another direction. However, the pursuers behind them came on fiercely, clearly not wanting to let them go.

"Miss Song, you take your men and run this way. I'll hold them off. Take good care of Ah Xun for me." Zhong Qingyi stared fiercely at the crowd rushing towards them, sword in hand, as she went to meet them.

“Sister Zhu, Ah Xun, you take the others and go first. I’m going to help Brother Zhong. We’ll catch up later,” Song Zhuiyan said firmly, leaving no room for doubt. “Tantan, give me a few bottles of wine.”

"Auntie, I'll stay with you. I don't want to be separated from you." Song Tantan was also stubborn; once she made up her mind, it wasn't easy to change it.

"Tantan, don't be childish. You need to protect the others, especially Xun. Brother Zhong isn't here, so you need to protect him. He's frail, so don't let him faint on the way." When we were going up the mountain earlier, Ye Moxun couldn't hold on anymore, and Zhong Qingyi carried him on her back.

"No, I'm younger than him. If he really faints, I can't carry him. I want to go with my aunt." Song Tantan held her hand tightly and refused to let go.

"Give me a few bottles of liquor, I'll fry them a few times and run away. I promise I'll run away as soon as I'm done. Trust your aunt, your aunt won't leave you. I'll definitely come find you soon." Song Zhuiyan's voice was stern but coaxing.

In the darkness, Song Tantan pouted and said in a tearful voice, "Then Auntie has to keep her word and come find me quickly, waaaah..."

Song Zhuiyan's heart softened at the crying, her throat tightened, and the thought of abandoning everyone else and leaving without a care in the world even flashed through her mind. What did it matter to her whether others lived or died?

But he only struggled for a moment before quickly putting aside his distractions, hugging Song Tantan and urging her to hurry up and bring out the high-proof liquor.

Song Tantan gave her over a dozen bottles of high-proof liquor and several bottles of insecticide spray, sniffing as she said, "Insecticide can explode when it comes into contact with fire, and it's quite powerful. Go ahead and blast it, but make sure you protect yourself."

"Okay, Auntie understands. Let's go, it's too late." Zhong Qingyi was already fighting with the other party.

After running for a while, Song Tantan heard a cracking sound behind her. She didn't turn around and kept holding Ye Moxun's hands as she ran, saying, "Don't get dizzy. Tell me if you're not feeling well. Or you can drink some Red Bull to perk yourself up."

Ye Moxun pursed his lips and didn't respond to her. He would rather save his energy for running away than talk so much. He was already starting to have a heart attack, but he had to force himself to keep going. Song Tantan, this little dumpling, had extraordinary energy. After running for most of the night, she could still keep talking.

If Song Tantan knew what he was thinking, she would definitely punch him on the head. Who was she talking so much for? Wasn't it just to keep him awake? If he really fainted, she could only drag him along. She couldn't carry him on her back; she was a head shorter than him.

As dawn broke, everyone was too tired to walk any further, and their pace gradually slowed down. At that moment, Song Tantan suddenly heard several wolf howls, and she grabbed Ye Moxun.

"I think I heard wolves howling. There might be a pack of wolves around here." Her face turned pale, and her expression became unusually serious.

"Ye Moxun, run the route you and Sister Zhu took. I'll hold off the wolf pack."
