Old Mrs. Zhao got up from the recliner and shoved the two roasted rabbits she was holding into Wan Cunhua's hands.
"Take it inside the house."
Wan Cunhua touched the glistening rabbit meat and licked her lips.
He sighed and then turned and went back into the house with the rabbit meat in his arms.
Both the Zhao Xiangnan and Zhao Xiangbei families watched this scene unfold.
Tao opened his mouth, but didn't know what to say.
Fatty Zhao and Skinny Zhao could only hide in the house, watching longingly as the sun set.
"Mother, are you hungry? Why don't we eat first?" Zhao Xiangnan smiled, trying to change the subject from the awkward topic.
Old Mrs. Zhao only wanted her money back. She insisted, "Give me the money, or none of you will eat today!"
Tao and Zhao Xiangbei then realized that they had seen Cheng steal the remaining money, but they had simply kept quiet.
Tao and Zhao Xiangbei looked away; they had nothing to say about this matter.
Mrs. Cheng was truly exasperated by this. She stamped her foot in frustration, "Alright, alright, it's just two hundred coins! I'll give it to you!"
There's really no way to persuade her anymore. This old woman is obsessed with money, and this time she's really seen things for the first time!
Cheng went inside to count the money. Old Mrs. Zhao glanced at her two sons, her face showing deep dissatisfaction.
"I worked so hard to raise you two, and in the end I raised ungrateful wretches!"
Zhao Xiangbei was the most honest of them all, and naturally he was afraid of being labeled an "ungrateful wretch." So he said in a gentle voice, "Mother, we are still very filial to you. You have no idea how worried my third brother and I were when you were sick."
Zhao Xiangnan quickly replied, "Yes, yes, Mother, we will definitely take good care of you in the future."
After all, she would still have to rely on her two sons in the future, so Old Lady Zhao didn't say the harshest things.
She kept a straight face and remained silent.
Cheng reluctantly counted out two hundred coins from his money bag and slowly handed it to Old Lady Zhao.
“Mother, you can see it clearly yourself. Two hundred coins, not a single one less.”
Old Mrs. Zhao snorted coldly and grabbed him.
She counted it carefully again, not entirely sure, and only stopped after confirming it was two hundred coins.
"Alright, you can all go home now."
Madam Cheng looked over in disbelief, "Mother, didn't we say we'd be eating at our house tonight?"
There are two rabbits there, we can't just not give them any meat at all, can we?
Old Mrs. Zhao thought for a moment, "Two rabbits, one for each family! I'll still eat at my eldest son's house. Don't you see how your family is doing? Do you think you can make a living by eating for yourselves every day? If I were relying on you to support me in my old age, I would have starved to death long ago."
Tao stepped forward to help Old Lady Zhao up, saying, "Mother, let me help you to sit at the table."
Now that she could get a share of rabbit meat, Cheng was more than happy that the old woman wouldn't eat at her house.
"Xiang Nan, go and get the meat. I'll go cook!"
The weather is getting colder and colder, and sometimes I have to wear clothes to sleep at night to keep warm.
He Tiantian's family still uses the thick cotton quilt they bought last year, which they only use when it snows in winter.
The school in Changfeng Village was finally completed amidst everyone's anticipation.
Four mud-brick houses stand at the end of the village, blending in with the houses of other households.
There is a large open space in front of the house, with the ground firmly compacted, which is a good place for children to play.
There are currently two school teachers in the village: Zhao Yan and Mr. Xu.
The number of children in the village who are in school has increased from the initial twenty-odd to the current forty.
With Zhao Yan studying as a role model, and with Chief Zhao's constant persuasion over the past six months, the situation improved.
Many villagers saw that education was a way out and realized its importance.
Of the four mud-brick houses, one was specifically for Mr. Xu to live in. It was fully furnished.
On the day Mr. Xu was moving, Zhao Yan and Zhao Tingzhang arrived early in the morning.
During this period, Zhao Yan often talked with Mr. Xu all night long. The two often discussed some profound academic matters, and Zhao Yan felt that he had benefited a lot.
At He Tiantian's house, Xu Qingyun's things had been almost completely packed away.
Zhao Yan and He Shitou each carried a package. He Shitou was very polite, saying, "Brother Yan, look, I can carry such heavy things by myself. Your hands are for studying, how can you carry things?"
Zhao Yan struggled to carry a box of books and declined, saying, "Mr. Xu is also my teacher, so this is the work I should do."
Zhao, the pavilion chief, urged from the front, "Alright, let's not waste any more time. Once we're settled over there, we'll introduce the children to them, haha."
The happiest person about the completion of the school was none other than Chief Zhao.
He's over fifty years old, and when he recalls his political achievements...
The successful establishment of this school, along with the hiring of a tutor to teach the children, made him feel that this was the most glorious moment of his political career.
He Tiantian's family took the move very seriously. The whole family, from top to bottom, from people to dogs, went with Mr. Xu to his new home.
A large crowd had gathered around the school, all filled with anticipation and hope for the establishment of the new school.
The children were the happiest, running and cheering on the flat ground.
The room was filled with neatly arranged tables and chairs, all of which were made by a skilled carpenter hired by Zhao Tingzhang and were very sturdy.
On the front wall of another room hung a polished wooden board. It was supposed to be a blackboard, but we would write with chalk.
