Zhao Yanniang seemed quite interested upon hearing this. She quickly ran over from the backyard and stared at Song Shi's belly, examining it closely.
Finally, he couldn't resist touching it and then lying down to listen to it.
"Oh my, is this a six-month pregnancy?" She only had one child, Zhao Yan, in her life, so Zhao Yan's mother didn't even remember what she looked like when she was pregnant.
Zhao Yanniang's tone carried the concern of an elder, which softened Song's heart.
"That's right! I'm about to give birth, and I still don't have a proper status. Auntie, what's the name of your village? I'll go to the village myself and find Er Gou's mother to get an explanation."
In this day and age, it's practically unheard of for a woman to become pregnant out of wedlock and then beg to marry into the family.
The reason why Ms. Song was able to disregard her pride was because she had been married to three men before, and none of them had made her life good.
The first man was chosen by her parents when she was fifteen or sixteen, and she couldn't settle down. They lived together for a year, and Song gave birth to a daughter. In the end, because Song met her second man, she devised a plan to divorce the first man and leave the child with him.
The second man was richer than the first and also liked to pamper her. They lived together for four years, but after Ms. Song gave birth to three daughters in succession, their conflicts finally erupted.
During the argument, she learned that the second man had already married two wives and had six daughters. He had approached her because he wanted her to bear him a son.
Since she didn't give birth to a son, she was naturally kicked out of the house by her husband and mother-in-law. Her three daughters were either given away or sold.
Song's family also disliked her for her impure character, and her brother and sister-in-law firmly forbade her from returning to her parents' home.
Penniless, Song wandered alone for a year. Eventually, she was taken in by an old man who was old enough to be her father.
She didn't do it willingly; she was forced by the old man who took her in.
The old man kept Song Shi under tight control, locking her in the house all day and not letting her go out. Then one day, while the old man was working in the fields, she broke the lock and ran away.
In the end, she was reduced to prostituting herself in brothels to make a living.
Until she met Zhao Ergou, although this man was younger than her, he was genuinely trying to win her over and spending money on her.
Song thought she had found happiness, but she never expected that after she became pregnant, the man would turn his back on her.
Even though Zhao Ergou told her the truth—that he wasn't rich—Song Shi accepted it.
Even if she had to eat coarse food and live a hard life with Er Gou in the future, she would not have any complaints.
But this man had no sense of responsibility whatsoever, which really infuriated Song!
After hearing Song's tearful complaint, Zhao Yanniang felt even more sympathy for her.
They were both women, but compared to Song, their experiences were far, far better.
Zhao Yanniang patted Song Shi's arm and said confidently, "Don't be discouraged, this baby is definitely a son!"
Song's eyes widened, and He Tiantian looked at Zhao Yanniang in disbelief.
What's wrong? You can tell a man or a woman just by looking at them?
"Aunt...Auntie, is what you said true?" Song asked with a mixture of cautious joy and uncertainty.
She was already prepared for this pregnancy to be another daughter.
The reason she didn't abort the child back then was because she's too old now, and if she had an abortion, she might never have her own child again.
So, Song gritted her teeth and resolutely kept the child.
Zhao Yanniang gave her a firm look, "Of course! You should listen to this old woman, I'm always very accurate when it comes to predicting pregnancies."
Ms. Song nodded happily after receiving affirmation.
Zhao Yanniang walked up to Zhao Ergou and advised him in an elder's tone, "Ergou, listen to your aunt. Since she's already pregnant with your child, and it's too late to abort it, just marry her."
“Look at you, you have an older brother who just got divorced, and no father to help you. Only your mother worries about you two, and it's not easy for her as a woman…”
Zhao Yanniang played the emotional card with Zhao Ergou, and a slight softening appeared on Zhao Ergou's originally gloomy face.
Seeing this, He Tiantian quickly chimed in, "Yes, Er Gou, you have a child now. Even for the sake of the child, you should take a step back and speak up, otherwise what will happen to the Song family? You can't be so irresponsible."
Seeing that the two strangers in front of her were trying to persuade Zhao Ergou.
Her gloom of the past few days was somewhat relieved.
She stepped forward and grabbed Zhao Ergou's tattered clothes, pleading, "Ergou, I don't mind that your family is poor, nor do I care that you lied to me before. This child... I really want him, he is your child too."
To be honest, Zhao Ergou, a young man who has just come of age in his teens, doesn't really have much of a child's sentimentality.
But for the past six months, everyone he's met has been trying to persuade him.
Everyone just says the same thing: "For the sake of the child, compromise."
Zhao Ergou was deeply conflicted; he didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps. But fate had other plans, and he ended up taking the same path as his father.
"Auntie, are you sure this baby is a boy?" Zhao Ergou suddenly looked up, his gaze fixed on Zhao Yanniang.
Zhao Yanniang was taken aback by the stare, and then glanced at Song Shi's belly.
Then he said with certainty, "Of course, Auntie's judgment is always very accurate."
Zhao Ergou thought for a moment, then stepped outside.
Song hurriedly followed, her voice trembling with anxiety. "Ergou, where are you going?"
