Chapter Eight: Song Yun, the Country Bumpkin

The four little rabbits were all warm and cozy, and their spirits were high.

"Wow, Mother, how can you not eat these little ones? I want to keep them..." Zhao Wanzi hugged the little rabbits in her arms, her face full of affection.

Indeed, no one can resist furry little animals.

He Tiantian smiled; she had originally planned to bring it back as a pet for the children.

"Okay, then Wanzi must take good care of them and go out every day to find food for the little rabbits."

"Don't worry, Mother, I can do it!" Zhao Wanzi quickly assured her, fearing that the four rabbits would be skinned and dismembered at any moment.

He Tiantian squatted down and started processing four fish and a rabbit. Zhao Denglong thought that a big meal would definitely require firewood, so she ran out to collect some. Meanwhile, Zhao Wanzi was building a burrow for the little rabbit next to where she was sleeping, saying that she wanted to be the little rabbit's neighbor.

This was the scene that greeted Ms. Tian when she arrived carrying a bag of millet. For some reason, although her own house was far superior to this dilapidated temple, she felt that this place seemed more free and cozy at that moment.

"Wanzi's mother, my mother-in-law has agreed to the fish exchange." Tian was a little embarrassed to say it, feeling that she had gotten the better deal.

Thinking back to the last time Wanzi's mother came to their door to beg for food, and how her mother-in-law was so shrewish and mean, she felt incredibly guilty.

He Tiantian looked up and saw Tian Shi standing awkwardly at the door, but she didn't come in.

She washed her hands with clean water before standing up. "Okay, there's still one fish that hasn't been cleaned yet, you can take it back."

He Tiantian found a jar to hold the millet, and handed over the millet with one hand and the fish with the other.

Ms. Tian was flattered and took the fish into her arms. In fact, the fish was already dead, and she was afraid that the fish would escape.

After taking a few steps, Madam Tian couldn't help but turn back and say apologetically, "Wanzi's mother, on behalf of my mother-in-law, I want to apologize to you for what happened last time..."

He Tiantian was taken aback, then waved her hand dismissively, "It's no big deal. This is between me and your mother-in-law, it has nothing to do with you. It's cold, sister-in-law, you should go home quickly."

We can't delay her from making braised rabbit.

In those days, there were no good seasonings at all. No matter how you cooked a dish, it wouldn't taste good if you didn't have seasoning.

He Tiantian bought some fine salt, cinnamon, star anise, and other stewing ingredients from the mall, and even splurged on two drops of soy sauce.

"Add some more firewood to the lantern," He Tiantian instructed.

"Okay, Mother."

Once stir-fried over high heat, the aroma of rabbit meat immediately fills the air.

As Zhao Denglong added firewood, he kept swallowing hard. Zhao Wanzi also gathered around, drooling and inhaling the delicious aroma in the air.

Finally, the rabbit meat in the pot was cooked, and the rice simmering on the side was ready to eat.

He Tiantian shouted, "Dinner's ready, you little rascals!"

Zhao Denglong and Zhao Wanzi responded in unison, then ran over to wash their hands.

As Song Yun approached the door, he smelled the delicious aroma and unconsciously swallowed. Ever since he came to Changfeng Mine, the cook there had been making truly awful food…

It's been a long time since I've smelled such a fragrance.

Song Yun walked in without realizing it. "Excuse me, is this the He family's house?"

He Tiantian looked up at Song Yun with some surprise, while Zhao Denglong and Zhao Wanzi also looked at her with wary eyes.

Song Yun smiled awkwardly, "Sister-in-law, I came here specifically to thank you for saving my life last time."

Sister-in-law… He Tiantian’s lips twitched involuntarily. Did she look that old? Although the original owner had given birth to two children, she was only twenty-three.

Alas, it seems that getting married early in ancient times was not an advantage.

After calling out, Song Yun also felt something was off. This woman, surnamed He, looked very young, probably only a year or two older than him. But he didn't care; he had brought money with him specifically for this occasion.

As he spoke, Song Yun handed over the money bag in his hand.

"Here is ten taels of silver, to thank you for saving my life that day."

Ten taels of silver… He Tiantian blinked. Even if all the savings of every household were added together, it wouldn’t amount to ten taels.

"Too much...too much. Saving you is just a small thing. Farmers are kind-hearted; anyone would lend a hand if they saw it," He Tiantian quickly declined.

She's a woman raising two children alone; if people found out she had a huge sum of money, wouldn't she become a target for bad people?

He Tiantian insisted on refusing, which put Song Yun in a difficult position.

"How about this? Could I have a meal at your house, sister-in-law? It'll cost one tael of silver per meal. It won't be a free meal," Song Yun suggested shamelessly. He was really craving it; the aroma was making his mouth water.

Back in the capital, he had eaten all sorts of delicacies, but he had never lost his composure like this.

"Alright then." He Tiantian took the silver tael, thinking that this was fine.

Money that has been properly circumvented will not be subject to gossip or backbiting when spent in the future.

Song Yun successfully stayed. Before he came, he sent his servant to inquire about the village. He learned that He Shi had just lost her husband and had been driven out by her wicked mother-in-law.

A woman lived in this dilapidated temple with her two children. The temple was actually kept in a very neat and tidy manner, which really impressed Song Yun.

"Director Song, please don't be shy, have some more," He Tiantian said against her conscience.

Song Yun nodded, picked up a piece of meat with his chopsticks, and put it in his mouth.

This taste… Song Yun was overjoyed; it was absolutely delicious!

"Sister-in-law, your cooking skills are simply amazing. Even chefs in the capital can't compare." Song Yun couldn't help but praise.

He Tiantian smiled and said, "Simple meals can't compare to the chefs of the powerful and wealthy. It's just that Director Song has been eating delicacies for a long time, so he finds it novel to change things up occasionally."

While she spoke modestly, He Tiantian thought to herself: "Of course it tastes good! She put in so many seasonings, how could it not be delicious! What a country bumpkin!"

Song Yun ate a few pieces of rabbit meat and still felt unsatisfied, but he was too embarrassed to eat any more.

He could have his fill of food, but he couldn't bring himself to compete with women and children for it.

However, since Mrs. He cooks so well, she could work as a cook in the mine! That way, he could eat delicious meals every day.

Thinking this, Song Yun smiled and looked at He Tiantian with a warm expression.

"Sister-in-law, you're such a good cook, would you be interested in being a cook at the mine?"

"Huh??" He Tiantian looked over in surprise. She was indeed looking for work. However, the road to town was difficult to travel in this freezing weather.

"Um, the cooks in the mine earn thirty copper coins a month." Song Yun stroked his chin. Although the wages were low, they were enough for an ordinary family to make a living.

“Okay, I’ll go!” He Tiantian readily agreed.

I'm content to have a job, but when my child is born next year, there will be many expenses.
