Zhao Denglong's intuition told her that this group was definitely not up to any good.
Zhao Xiaolu also vaguely saw the figures of several people ahead. She looked carefully for a while, then lowered her voice and said, "These don't seem to be from our village..."
Zhao Denglong nodded solemnly.
From this distance, they could only vaguely hear the conversation of the group in front of them.
"Will this idea work? Won't it be discovered?"
"What did you find? The food is right there, ready to go. If you don't go, you'll go hungry!"
"We have plenty of people, why should we be afraid of those few villagers?"
The group whispered among themselves, and Zhao Denglong and Zhao Xiaolv heard the words "stealing grain" very clearly.
The two exchanged a quick glance, crouched down, and quietly retreated. After walking quite a distance, they both began to run wildly towards the village.
All they could hear was the whistling wind. Zhao Denglong and Zhao Xiaolv had only one thought in their minds: they had to tell the village head and the whole village the news.
Zhao Yan had never done farm work before, and this year was the first time he had stayed at home for such a long time.
He also went to the fields with his mother to harvest and bundle the rice.
Zhao Yan's mother felt sorry for her child and repeatedly advised him to stay home and study, and not to worry about the work in the fields.
But Zhao Yan wouldn't listen to reason. Ever since he came back, he's been taking on all the work at home and in the fields.
Zhao Yanniang couldn't persuade her son, so she could only work faster herself when harvesting rice.
If she does more work, her son can do less.
"Grandpa Pavilion Chief! Grandpa Pavilion Chief!" Zhao Denglong shouted, panting as he stood on the edge of the field.
The closest land was Aunt Zhao's land, and at that moment Zhao Yan also heard Zhao Denglong's shout.
He straightened up and asked the lantern, "What's wrong? What happened?"
Zhao Tingzhang was still bent over cutting rice in the paddy field and didn't hear Zhao Denglong's shouts at all.
Zhao Denglong's mouth was dry from running, and she swallowed hard. She then turned to Zhao Yan and said, "Brother Zhao Yan, someone is trying to steal our village's grain."
"What!"
Zhao Yan and his mother were both startled. They both knew this was a serious matter, and Zhao Yan quickly threw down the sickle in his hand. "Lantern, wait a moment, I'll go and call Chief Zhao here."
With so many families' lands all connected, Zhao Xiaolu couldn't help but search for her family members in the crowd.
She knew where her family's land was, and soon she saw her grandparents working in the fields, her mother with her big pregnant belly also working, and her younger sister...
Zhao Xiaolu felt a pang of unease, but it only lasted for a moment.
There was nothing left in this home for her to cherish; this home had abandoned her first!
"Sister Xiao Lü, what are you thinking about?" Zhao Denglong noticed the strangeness of the person next to her, but when she saw Aunt Sun's family working in front of her, Zhao Denglong seemed to have thought of something.
"No, it's nothing." Zhao Xiaolu turned her face away angrily, trying to stop herself from looking.
Zhao Denglong wisely kept quiet; she knew the pain of being separated from one's family. She had been heartbroken when her father died.
Before long, Zhao Yan brought Zhao Tingzhang over.
Both of them were panting heavily from running. "Lantern, repeat what you just said to the listener again."
Zhao Denglong then recounted everything he had heard in the back mountain, and Zhao Xiaolu added, "Grandpa Pavilion Chief, those people looked a lot like the people from Peach Blossom Village..."
Zhao Xiaolu shared her guess, but she wasn't entirely sure.
"What? Peach Blossom Village?" Zhao Tingzhang frowned. Peach Blossom Village was so far away from their Changfeng Village, how did they know about the village?
And they even knew that their village was harvesting grain these days, yet they still wanted to steal the grain?
How could Chief Zhao possibly tolerate this!
"Little Green, how do you know she's from Peach Blossom Village? Have you met her before?" Zhao Yan asked thoughtfully.
In an instant, everyone's attention turned to Zhao Xiaolü.
Zhao Xiaolu blushed at his gaze, paused for a moment, and then said, "I saw that person come to our village before. It was on the day of Uncle Youqian's wedding. They were among the people responsible for delivering gifts."
"However, so much time has passed, I don't remember if I've remembered it wrong..."
The group of people looked at each other.
Zhao Tingzhang looked at Zhao Youqian's family working in the field not far away, and then fell into deep thought.
Isn't Zhao Guihua, Zhao Youqian's wife, from Peach Blossom Village?
There were only two women who married into their village from Peach Blossom Village: the first was Maruko's mother, Madam He, and the second was this Zhao Guihua.
Zhao Yanniang snorted coldly, "I never thought that Zhao Youqian's family would be so biased towards outsiders. His wife is such a scoundrel, she's trying to kill the whole village!"
These days, without food, everyone is just waiting to die.
"Yan'er, take a look at who's on patrol tonight?" Zhao Tingzhang asked.
Zhao Yan has a copy of the patrol list, and another copy is posted on the old locust tree at the entrance of the village.
But who would carry this thing with them when they go to work in the fields? Zhao Yan got up and was about to go home to check.
Zhao Tingzhang couldn't wait a moment longer and followed after him.
"Fine, I'll go with you. Let's go take a look at the village entrance."
Although Zhao Yanniang also wanted to join in the fun and see what was going on, she thought it was more important to get back to work in the fields; it wouldn't be good if her things were stolen that night.
Zhao Xiaolü and Zhao Denglong followed closely behind, and the four of them soon reached the village entrance.
