Xiaoman wanted to go in by herself. At her speed, those people wouldn't have time to react. If Han Bin came along, she'd have to take care of him: "I can handle it by myself."
Han Bin's attitude was firm: "Either we go together, or I go."
"Then go ahead."
"Okay. If things don't look good, you leave immediately."
"Um."
Han Bin crouched down and walked towards the cave entrance.
Xiaoman saw that he was really planning to go alone, so she called him back. Although he had disrupted his plans, he was also afraid that he couldn't handle it. "You stay here and keep watch. If they run away, you follow behind. Don't make a move. We'll make our move together after I catch up with them."
Where are you going?
"Looking for something."
"What are you looking for? I'll help you find it."
You don't know him.
"Alright then, be careful."
"Um."
Half an hour later, Xiaoman brought back a rabbit.
Why are you catching a rabbit?
"You'll find out soon enough." Xiaoman carried the rabbit and walked towards the burrow. Han Bin immediately followed. Xiaoman glanced back at him.
Han Bin thought Xiaoman was preventing him from coming: "I have to protect you."
"Protect me? Stay away from me when we get to the cave entrance."
"Um."
Upon reaching the burrow entrance, Xiaoman took a cloth bag out of her pocket. Inside the bag was a lump of green paste. Xiaoman smeared the substance on the rabbit's leg and then herded the rabbit into the burrow.
A moment later, a child's voice rang out: "Rabbit!"
Then, a man's voice came out: "Where? Grab him quickly. I've been eating dry rations every day for the past few days, I'm about to throw up."
"There she is. Third brother, hurry!"
"Got it, got it! Oh dear? Why am I feeling a little dizzy?"
"I feel a little dizzy too."
"Me too. We...we're not...am I..."
Bang! Bang! Bang...
A moment later, the rabbit ran out of its burrow again. Xiaoman ignored it, but Hanbin quickly took a few steps back. The rabbit disappeared in an instant.
Han Bin looked into the cave and asked, "Can we go in now?"
"Wait a little longer."
Another ten minutes or so passed before Xiaoman led Hanbin inside. Upon entering, they saw six adults and four children lying on the ground.
Han Bin clicked his tongue twice: "Xiaoman, what is that thing of yours? How is it so powerful?"
Xiaoman ignored him. That prescription was bought at great expense; how could it not be effective? If he hadn't insisted on coming along, she wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble.
Xiaoman patted the adults down and soon pulled out a paper bag. The bag was already open, and inside were several sheets of paper. Xiaoman pulled the papers out of the bag and began to read them carefully.
"You can read?"
Xiaoman ignored him. After reading it, Xiaoman handed the paper to Han Bin: "Take a look too."
"This...isn't this inappropriate?"
"These people went through all this trouble just for this. Aren't you curious?"
Han Bin took the paper from Xiao Man's hand. After reading it, Han Bin was silent for a moment: "Xiao Man, thank you."
You're welcome. The more you know, the less likely you are to go astray.
Xiaoman put the documents back exactly as they were: "After we come down the mountain, tell them that these people were lying on the ground when we came in. We didn't know what happened, and we were afraid that they would wake up, and we were also afraid that the people who were supposed to meet them would trap us in the cave, so we took the children down the mountain first."
"So... we're just going to ignore these people?"
“We’re here to help. If we do all the work, what are they supposed to do? Let’s go.”
"good."
Officer Li was getting anxious when Xiaoman and Han Bin came down from the mountain, carrying four children. The children didn't seem to react at all.
Officer Li's face turned pale instantly. "What happened to the children?"
Xiaoman: "I don't know."
"Don't know? Then he must still be alive: Give me the child quickly."
"Okay." Xiaoman handed the child to Officer Li and went to sit in the car. Han Bin also handed the child to Officer Li.
Officer Li checked the children's pulses. "They're still alive, Xiao He, get them to the hospital quickly."
"good."
After taking the children away, Officer Li quickly asked, "How did you rescue the children? What about those people? Did they escape?"
"By sheer coincidence, when we found them..." Han Bin repeated Xiao Man's words. "They were still in the cave when we left."
"Quickly, take us there."
"good."
More than an hour later, Officer Li brought the man back. "Comrade Wang Xiaoman, Comrade Han Bin, on behalf of the organization, thank you."
Xiaoman shifted her gaze from the car's steering wheel to Officer Li's face: "How should I thank you?"
"Huh?!" Officer Li was stunned by Xiaoman's question: "This... the organization will give you a commendation."
"No need." Xiaoman patted the steering wheel: "You can teach me this."
"You want to learn to drive?"
"Um."
Officer Li was a little surprised, but then he looked at Xiaoman: This woman was different from other women. "Okay, I'll teach you."
On the way back, Officer Li taught Xiaoman while driving.
When they arrived at the police station, Xiaoman wanted to try it out herself: "Can I drive it?"
"No. This thing is too dangerous. I'll teach you when I have time, and then you can drive it."
"Okay. I'll head back now."
Han Bin: "I'm going back too. You guys keep busy."
"I'll see you off. Don't worry, I'll recommend you for good deeds."
Xiaoman didn't really care. But if they offered her something, she would take it.
Han Bin: "You're too kind. It's just what we should do."
After leaving the police station, Xiaoman and Hanbin parted ways. Xiaoman wandered around the county and learned quite a bit. Hanbin went to inquire about the girl his grandmother had her eye on. Who knows what he'll find out?
When Xiaoman passed by the mountain where Han Bin had been hanged last time, she went in and caught three pheasants.
Xiaoxue was picking vegetables in the yard. Xiaoman came in carrying three chickens. Xiaoxue jumped up immediately: "Sister, you're back? Grandma and Mom were so worried. I was so worried too."
Xiaoman gave her a pheasant: "You know how to prepare it, right?"
Xiaoxue was overjoyed. "Yes, yes. Sister, I'll get ready right now."
"Wait a minute." Xiaoman gave the other two to Grandma Wang: "You can eat one, and give the other to the accountant. It's a thank-you gift for the horse last time."
"Okay. Is everything done?"
"Finished? Xiaoxue, do you want to go to school?" The girls in the village don't go to school. Xiaoman thought the girls here were like the boys in her village, who had to have a tutor come to their homes to learn. But after visiting the county today, she discovered that boys and girls here can attend the same school.
Xiaoxue was stunned: "I can go to school too?"
Xiaoman's mother: "Why should a girl go to school?"
Xiaoman wanted to say, "Girls should go to school too." Then she realized it was different where she lived: "Gender equality exists; boys can go to school, and girls can go to school too. Xiaoxue, do you want to go to school?"
Xiaoxue looked at her mother, then at her sister, and whispered, "I want to."
"If you want to, then go ahead. Mother, send her to school tomorrow."
“This…” Xiaoman’s mother looked at her mother-in-law.
Grandma Wang thought for a moment and said, "If the child wants to go, let her go."
"Well... school started a long time ago. Wouldn't it be inappropriate to go halfway through?"
Xiaoman: "As long as someone accepts her, I'll send her there. Let her learn first. If she can't learn it, she can repeat it next semester."
"Oh well."
Xiaoxue happily hugged Xiaoman: "Sister, you're so kind."
On the other hand, Han Bin was frightened by his mother and grandmother as soon as he got home.
