Chapter Seventy-Nine: Going Back
The three people sat in a triangle on chairs, and the atmosphere in the small room was heavy and oppressive.
"This matter is not that simple; it could have far-reaching implications."
“That’s right. A gang has been based here for more than ten years, abducting so many women and children. Who exactly are their targets? Moreover, their accomplices and their networks are spread throughout the surrounding counties, cities and provinces. This is a partial list, which I got from that woman named Liang Po.”
Liang Po started her business seven years ago, just two years after the famine ended. Many families were starving, and to survive, many rural families sold their daughters. If it wasn't possible to do it openly, they would sell them secretly. That's when Liang Po got involved with Brother Leopard and began her life of trafficking.
“In the past, many families would secretly contact them to sell their daughters in exchange for food. Later, when life got a little better and no one sold children anymore, they started to abduct and drug them. Most of the children they abducted were girls, and the babies were boys.”
What's even more chilling is that most of the women or girls with less-than-ideal appearances were sold to the mountains, while the whereabouts of those who were beautiful and had outstanding temperaments were unknown. Babies were even easier to sell. These days, there are many families without children, and as long as you have a baby boy, there are plenty of people vying for him.
"These are five truth-telling talismans and five truth-revealing vials. Don't ask me where they came from; I don't know. This is all I have, and I'm giving them all to you. You can take the talismans back to your department and see if those two charlatans can copy them. The truth-revealing vials are for you; you should have connections to research them."
Gu Zuozuo placed the two items on the table in front of them, her eyes serious and focused.
"I have only one request: investigate thoroughly! No matter how large the organization behind them is, or how high their status is, don't forget, the more than one hundred innocent souls in the backyard cellar are waiting!"
"Of course, you can try to let this go, but I will investigate using my own methods and make a huge fuss. Don't blame me if I do."
Cai Wenyue's lips twitched. She had figured out this trick of giving a sweet treat and then slapping her. No wonder Feishu had dragged her into this; it seemed this was what was waiting for her.
Xie Jinyu looked at the list in her hand, her eyes darkening as if a storm was about to break.
"Don't worry, I won't let any of these parasites get away with it. I will definitely investigate them thoroughly!"
She said she was going to look at the things on the table in front of her, a complex mix of emotions and disappointment flashing in her eyes.
"Can we talk in private for a moment?"
Gu Zuozuo was about to refuse without thinking, but Xie Jinyu seemed to know what she was going to say and sighed.
"It's about your Gu family."
Gu Zuozuo immediately shut up and looked at Cai Wenyue, who was sitting there watching the show with great interest.
Cai Wenyue's eyelids twitched, she ground her back teeth, snorted, and got up to leave.
She was afraid of this old lady. Not only did she threaten people by grabbing their necks at the drop of a hat, but the worst part was that she couldn't even beat her!
What are you trying to say?
Xie Jinyu remained silent for a long time before finally speaking with difficulty, as Gu Zuozuo grew increasingly impatient.
"Regarding what you said, the investigation results are in. We are very sorry that it was our negligence that caused you so much suffering. The higher-ups will compensate you, and you can accept it then."
Gu Zuozuo rested her chin on her hand, looking at him with a half-smile. After he finished speaking, she slowly opened her mouth.
"Isn't it a bit late for you to think about making amends now that the person is dead?"
"I'm sorry, those people paid the price. Moreover, the news about your Gu family's extraordinary wealth was leaked by your own family members. The higher-ups have already come forward to clarify that it's a rumor. As for whether those who still covet the Gu family's assets believe it or not, I can't guarantee it."
“I knew it all along; those people have never stopped monitoring me.”
"Also, your parents... are under tight protection; that letter is for outsiders to see."
