Chapter Twenty-Three: Heading to the County Town
Back at the educated youth settlement, Gu Zuozuo listened to the system's rambling description of what happened after she left. She listened and then tossed it aside. Anyway, she would never see it again, so why remember it so clearly?
We need to find a time to slaughter the wild boars and deer in the space, and it would be best to also get a few pounds of dried meat, which can then be sent back to Uncle Meng, Aunt Meng, and my uncle to eat.
It's 1969 now. Not to mention the countryside, even in the city, people don't eat much meat in a month. There are only two catties of meat ration coupons available each month. They also gave the three of them cloth coupons and grain coupons. I guess they will have to be frugal for the next few months.
I can help you!
Klass watched her muttering to herself and couldn't resist jumping out.
Gu Zuozuo tilted her head, her eyes slightly curved, revealing a glimmer of starlight in her pupils.
"How can a system like yours help me?"
[Host! No species discrimination! There's nothing we, Cow & Claes, can't do!]
"Alright then, I'll leave it to you. Don't let me down."
Klass patted his chest and made a solemn promise, not feeling at all that something was wrong.
She was right; the system has many functions, but she hasn't figured them all out yet.
But it's okay, there's still plenty of time, we can take it slowly later.
Gu Zuozuo smiled and, in a very good mood, went to help Meng Tian and the other person cook.
After breakfast, the female educated youth at the settlement invited their companions to go to the county town.
This is probably the last time I'll go to the county town. After all, it gets so cold here in October that it feels like ice crystals are falling. When you go outside, you feel like your ears could freeze off. By the end of October, the mountains will probably be closed off by heavy snow.
Didn't you see that the villagers started pickling sauerkraut and salted vegetables as soon as the autumn harvest ended?
Gu Zuozuo went out with three other people.
With a crossbody bag slung over her shoulder and her hair pulled back into a bun on top of her head, she stood tall and straight in her polyester shirt and black pants, which made her appear much less delicate.
"This hairstyle looks so good, I want to tie my hair up like this too."
Qi Meng pinched Gu Zuozuo's big bun on her head, looking at her long, black, and smooth hair with envy. Then she touched her own long hair and laughed like a husky that had stolen its owner's food.
"Zuo Zuo, look, my hair has become smooth and silky!"
Gu Zuozuo smiled and helped her comb her hair into a matching bun, ignoring the arrogant chatter of the system in her mind.
[Hmph, eating several milk fruits a day, how could it not be good? Don't you even know who's responsible for it!]
After the three of them finished getting ready and left, the others were still eating. Seeing their unusual outfits, some were envious, some were jealous, and some had ill intentions.
The three ignored the stares, greeted Li Fanghua, and went straight out the door.
The "intelligence gathering point" under the big tree at the village entrance was already filled with aunties and grandmas sewing shoe soles. They were sitting head to head, talking about something, and every now and then, hearty laughter could be heard.
When the three of them were seen, some people looked them up and down, while others greeted them warmly.
"Zuo Zuo, are you in the county town today?"
Aunt Wu waved and greeted them warmly, smiling broadly at the three of them.
Gu Zuozuo and the other two nodded, said goodbye to the older women, and left, afraid that there wouldn't be any seats left on the oxcart if they were late.
"These three female educated youths are all so beautiful. I don't know how their parents raised them. Just listen to the way they speak. They are so pleasant to listen to."
Men would soften upon hearing this, unlike them, who can make men immediately pledge their brotherhood with a single word.
"They seem to be from Haicheng, right? My son said that's how they all speak there, one tone can go on and on in eighteen different ways?"
"What do you think? Would it be okay for them to be my daughters-in-law?"
Upon hearing this, the shoe sewers stopped sewing, and the sweaters stopped knitting. Everyone looked at her with disgust and a strange expression.
"Are you dreaming?"
"Forget it, none of the girls at the educated youth settlement want to marry into the village, sigh~"
