Chapter Twenty-Four: The Unknown Package
"Why are there so many?"
The three stared in disbelief at the four large packages, then looked at each other in confusion for a long time.
The package wasn't big, but it was bulging, and you could tell at a glance that it was packed with a lot of things.
Three of them came from Haicheng, and one came from Beijing.
"From Beijing? Zuo Zuo, do you have any relatives or friends in Beijing?"
The recipient was Gu Zuozuo, so the packages were sent to her. Two of the four packages were for her. One of them, from Haicheng, was obviously sent by Meng's parents, but she really didn't know who sent the one from Beijing.
"Oh, and your three letters."
Suddenly, as if remembering something, Luo Jing slapped her forehead, picked up a thick stack of envelopes from the side, and handed three of them to the three people.
Gu Zuozuo looked at the envelope handed to her, somewhat surprised. There was even an envelope for her?
"Beijing Military Region?"
After reading it several times, I confirmed that the recipient was myself, the mailing address was indeed from the military, and even the stamps were military postage specially supplied by the army.
Meng Tian and the other woman were also curious, but they didn't ask any questions. They simply put away the envelope and chatted with Luo Jing with a playful smile.
"Sister Luo, here's some jerky for you. It's made from venison, and it's delicious."
As she spoke, Gu Zuozuo took out an oil paper package from her handbag and handed it to Luo Jing behind the counter.
Luo Jing was surprised for a moment, but without any hesitation, she put it away.
"Okay, the kids at home haven't had meat in a long time, so I won't be polite."
After mailing out the prepared packages and envelopes, the three of them left the packages with Luo Jing first, as they still needed to buy some things.
Luo Jing was very cheerful, patting his chest to show that he would take good care of things and reassure them.
"Don't worry, I'll take good care of you. You go and buy what you need first. If you can't carry it when you come back, I'll have Liangzi come back and deliver it to you."
After thanking them, Gu Zuozuo and the other two turned and left, relieved.
The streets were filled with people wearing gray and black jackets, and every now and then a person in a green military uniform would ride by on a bicycle. Each time the crisp bell rang, it would attract countless envious and jealous glances.
As Gu Zuozuo and the other two walked, they looked around at their surroundings and occasionally whispered a few words to each other.
Last time I got off at the train station, I was quite tired and didn't have the energy to look around this small county town. Now that I look closely, it's really dilapidated compared to big cities.
Two-story buildings are rare; most are single-story houses with red slogans written all over the walls, giving them a strong sense of history.
The bicycle sped by, leaving behind a cloud of dust that made the people following behind mutter curses under their breath.
As we walked and looked around, we soon arrived at the largest and only supply and marketing cooperative in the county.
The eight large red characters "Develop the economy and ensure supply" are prominently displayed on both sides of the entrance, and many people are coming and going at the entrance.
Upon entering the gate, one sees tall counters filled with goods arranged in categories.
Neatly dressed sales clerks bustled back and forth behind the counter, their headbands holding bills flying everywhere.
The three walked around looking at things, and finally stopped at the household goods section.
"Comrade, get two thermos flasks and three hot water bottles."
The woman behind the counter glanced at the three of them in surprise, then turned around and took out what they wanted from the shelf.
"A thermos costs ten yuan and requires four industrial coupons; a hot water bottle costs three yuan and requires two industrial coupons; the total is twenty-nine yuan and requires ten industrial coupons."
Without hesitation, Gu Zuozuo took out the money. Meng Tian quickly pulled out ten industrial vouchers, met Gu Zuozuo's gaze, and smiled smugly.
What a joke! She was already prepared to pay for the tickets. If Zuo Zuo hadn't been so quick, she would have paid for them too. Her father had given her a lot of money and tickets when she arrived, intending for her to buy things for her two other friends.
Qi Meng took back the money she had taken out, and without saying a word, just smiled at the other two.
They've always had the same things since they were little.
